Life must be very hard for you snowflakes.

Off to Cuba for your holidays?

On the contrary life is quite easy for me Col, I love watching you lose the plot whenever someone is the slightest bit critical of your orange boyfriend.

Cuba is actually a great place to go and visit. Great people, great scenery, great history and just something a little different. It's becoming an easier place to travel around as its economy starts to open up as well. Cheap too, including the beer. You should try it Col, you might be suprised.

I wouldn't mind seeing it.

As for Col, he's probably worried his mates will put him on the communist black list.

Each to their own, I am not fussed either way, but i just thought I would build a soapbox that some of the more polictally correct members of the forum could jump on to espouse their views.

Well you've made a good start by applying a pejorative term to anyone who supports it… Possibly not the best way to foster open discussion.

FWIW I support it because I don't see it as my place to restrict access to something based on sexual preference. I wouldn't support churches being forced to do it - they can work it out themselves. I do find it amazing that some who think of themselves as libertarian and against government intervention are happy for the government to restrict access to marriage by legislation.

Lets just tick the box and move on without wasting another dollar on the subject, the gay community should have the same rights as everyone else

Probably a highly unpopular view but I'm not in favour. However, I think the majority of Australians should decide via a plebiscite. If the polls are correct and around 70% of Australians are in favour then the plebiscite will be carried and I'll support it on the basis that it's the will of the majority.

Cause a plebiscite is a waste of money
Cause we live in a representative democracy
Cause there was no plebiscite to restrict the marriage franchise
Cause no other social issue has bern decided that way - why pick on the gays?

I respect anyone for their believes, but why waste money on a plebiscite that could be directed towards schools, hiospitals or the disabled. Let the pollies have a secret ballot and put this issue to bed for ever at no cost to the tax payer

Fair question. I could accept a conscience vote with the issue to be decided by a majority of both Houses of Parliament if it is genuine. My problem is that it is unlikely to be a genuine. Labor has indicated it would expect all its members to vote in favour of gay marriage so that's not necessarily representative of the public will. Perhaps a secret ballot would allow members, Liberal, Labor and others, to vote according to their conscience and I could accept that. In any event, I won't be distressed if it comes to pass

Must be a slow week.

This NY senator's speech made me have a long, hard think about the topic.

We elect a government to make these decisions
No way should this go to a plebiscite the government must make the decision and we can use the saved money ($250 mil) on far better things like research grants at universities which may have substantial benefits, hospitals beds etc
Problem is Australian governments of the day are to gutless to make these decisions. We need somebody with the foresight like Gough Whitlam to be a true leader and make these simple decisions

It's ok but would prefer that it was just called Gay marriage or Garraige or whatever….. Union between man and women should be held in higher regard for the simple fact that is the only union that creates life....bearing that in mind , it's just false to say same sex unions can ever really be equal, to say they are is just pretence and lowers the tone of opposite sex unions

Deserved it's own thread…so it's a Yes from me...

Why shouldn't Gays have the right to be miserable like a majority of married couples...
