How could he invest in the tigers given our current ownership structure? In any event I imagine he’s a south’s fan who is doing it for fun. He could buy the whole club with pocket change.

Billionaire tech guru Mike Cannon-Brookes has joined Russell Crowe and James Packer as a co-owner of the Rabbitohs after buying a stake in the NRL club.


I wouldn't count this as a smart business investment i would count it as a philanthropic decision, in terms of business and the future of the rabbitohs region, their region will always be stagnant with an aging population,

Probably Crowe is the attraction?

Because he supports the club and wants to ensure its viability and success. If you have made as much money as he has elsewhere, why wouldn't he want to put into something that he wants to preserve. He is also buying real estate all over the country in the best places. Pretty sure the motivation for this investment is not about making money - it's about enjoying his wealth.

As previously pointed out, Cannon Brookes is worth $40B, this is throw away money for him and Im sure he does not expect a ROI for this money because he wont get any.

The news that is not being emphasised in this article, is that this "investment" by CB does not increase the value, or the capital of Souffs by $1.00. Rusty & HaC have simply found their own fairy godfather and partially divested their shares. This is not increased investment, this is Rusty & HaC "getting out".

This is going to happen more and more. NRL licenses are a limited commodity and they are only going to be worth more and more. Ofcourse cannon brooks doesn’t see his investment in the traditional terms of “what is the net present value of the earnings of south’s”, he is a fan an buying 25% is an experience that for him is priceless. The world of professional sports is flooded with similar examples in soccer, basketball, baseball, IPL etc etc. when you are worth billions owning a team is something to tick of the bucket list. In practical terms for south’s, having cannon brooks and packer provide infinite capital if that is ever required and presumably can also bring their business experience/connections to the board and executive management of the club as well as sponsorship etc. Ultimately I think we will see the haves and the have nots continue to diverge in the future (even more so than today).

Haha, yes, figure of speech.

I really think the brain trust was on a ticket to nowhere this year and personally would of seriously given up I think, as you have to remember it really appeared hartigan and pascoe were really angeling to fire madge to give themselves some more time in the job. They were the ones that were "leading" the review.

Not sure how pascoe has survived.

But I've got a new sense of optimism with sheens and his crew back at the club.


Really happy with the boards decision to make sheens the boss and will back the club all the way again including membership.
