RIP

I’ve been around since 1960 and followed west’s all my life. I’ve never in that time seen such an out pouring of emotion and love for a fellow Australian. It’s surreal I’ve never met Tommy yet I feel like I’ve lost a brother. RIP legend.

Well said.
Me too

The Raudonikis family, and partner Trish, would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kind thoughts and well wishes in this difficult time. This being the only battle Tom has ever lost has been something our family, friends and the football community has found difficult to accept. Tommy gave his all and was surrounded by loving family to the end. The funeral service will be a small private affair, as Tom would have wanted, but we thank you all for your love and support.

RIP Champion

An extract

If you get a chance, read Roy Masters tribute to Tommy in the Fairfax Media.
This extract is the most poignant:

————————————-————————

"At a time his loved ones are searching for meaning in life, Tom's devoted partner, Trish, sent a text. It read: 'Tommy passed away at 7am on the 7th. He was 70 and he wore jersey No. 7'.
Seven is also the sacred number of the ancient gods. There are also seven seas, seven days in the week, seven sacraments, seven wonders of the world.
But only one Tommy."
Vale Tommy "Terrific" Raudonikis 💔

Hodgson says he left Wests out of loyalty after mate Raudonikis overlooked

April 10, 2021 — 5.21pm

Brett Hodgson took a pay cut to join Parramatta in 2000 after Tommy Raudonikis was passed over to coach the inaugural Wests Tigers team.

The Tigers’ clash with the Cowboys on Sunday is officially a sellout as fans flock to Leichhardt Oval to pay their respects to Raudonikis. The club will retire the No.7 jersey across all four grades and the NRL side will wear the Magpies-inspired black jersey rather than the orange strip that was initially scheduled to be worn.
.

Players will wear black armbands, while a minute’s silence is being observed at all NRL matches during round five. Supporters are planning to stand and applaud during the seventh minute of the game to mark the occasion.

Many stories have been told since the death on Wednesday of one of the game’s great characters. One that hasn’t received an airing until now is his relationship with Hodgson. Much like Raudonikis, Hodgson played well above his weight and the pair had a tight bond during the final years of the Western Suburbs Magpies in the late 1990s.

Raudonikis was coaching the club in 1999 and Hodgson, who was off contract at the time, didn’t want to be coached by anyone else. He committed play for Raudonikis, only for Wayne Pearce to be appointed the coach the following year when Balmain and Western Suburbs merged to become Wests Tigers. He then agreed to a smaller deal from the Eels than the one offered to him by the newly-formed joint venture after Raudonikis was overlooked.

“I got offered a deal to stay at Wests Tigers when they first merged,” Hodgson recalled. “I had a conversation with Tommy that I was going to stay. I felt my loyalties lay with Tommy and I took less money to go to Parramatta.”

“I had a lot of respect for Wayne Pearce [who was the first Wests Tigers coach] ... but I had a lot of loyalty to Tommy,” said Hodgson, who now coaches English side Hull FC. “The rest is history.”

Raudonikis gave Hodgson his first-grade debut midway through the 1997 season, but he didn’t get much game time.

“It was funny the way my story played out,” Hodgson said. “In my first game I was on the bench and didn’t get on until the 78th minute because Tommy forgot I was on the sidelines.

“Paul Langmack came off, grabbed the walkie-talkie and said: ‘Tommy, you’ve got [Hodgson] down here, are you going to put him on?’

“Tommy asked me where I wanted to play and I said fullback.

“He said, ‘Righto, off you go.’

“That’s how it happened for me.

“That summed him up. You just wanted to play for him and give it all you could.”

One of Hodgson’s enduring memories of Raudonikis was the routine he put the team through after games. The coach would take them out to Chili’s Texas Grill in Woodbine, which had a large hill behind it.

“We’d call it Chilli’s Hill,” Hodgson said. “He would drive up to the top of the hill, sit on the bonnet of the ute and yell at us to keep running until he finished his drink.

“There was no recovery, it was just move into the next run.

“It didn’t matter if you were injured or sore, you had to keep going, even if you had to vomit on the run.

“That’s the way he was. He was so passionate that you just wanted to do anything for him.”

The story came full circle when Hodgson signed with Wests Tigers in 2004 season and famously went on to win a title with the joint venture in 2005.

The family of iconic Kangaroos player Tommy Raudonikis have accepted an offer from the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) for a memorial service to be held in his honour.

The Memorial Service will be held between 11am and noon on Monday (April 19) at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM said the Memorial Service would be a fitting way to honour a legend of the game.

“Tommy was one of a kind. He was the people’s champion who reached the pinnacle of our game, it’s fitting the rugby league community will come together on Monday to pay tribute to one of the most popular players in the game’s history,’’ he said.

“We have worked with Tommy’s family to ensure a Memorial that fittingly celebrates a legend of our game.”

Members of the public are welcome to attend the Memorial. Entry will be via the Members Entrance, Gate A on Driver Avenue. Tickets are not required.

Im thinking of heading in for this on Monday, anyone else going?
Just wondering if Magpie type gear would be OK, or a more formal
usual gear for a memorial service?

Nice of you to go in. I'm not heading in myself but would imagine Wests gear would be perfect. Tommy would love it.

Tommy would want people to wear their Maggies gear IMO. Formality wasn't his forte, he seemed to love it when people just were themselves without any pomp.

The first half was an embarrassment. Like a white flag was raised. The worst possible performance in a game that was in memoriam of arguably the game's fiercest competitor. Unacceptable. That's what the fans were dirty with. The loss didn't hurt as much as the meek, pathetic performance in the first 40 that got us in that huge hole to begin with. If Lee doesn't comprehend that.....
