Aaron Woods says the Tigers can overcome the Robbie Farah-Jason Taylor feud

WHEN Aaron Woods hit the phones for a recent Wests Tigers’ membership drive, the only thing fans wanted to know about was the ongoing feud between coach Jason Taylor and club favourite Robbie Farah.

Despite the drama, some were happy to renew their memberships on the spot.

“Some said they wanted to see how the Robbie saga goes before they renewed,’’ Woods told The Daily Telegraph yesterday.

“I said to them, ‘if I told you I knew what was going on, it would be a lie. All I can tell you is they have both been professional and kept it to themselves’.’’

If the Tigers are any chance to avoid missing a fifth straight finals series, they’ll need to resolve the tension between Taylor and the unwanted Farah.

It’s the biggest issue confronting the club. It remains to be seen if Farah will link with another club before the season starts _ or hangs around to collect his pay cheque and battles Matt Ballin for the starting No. 9 jumper.

The fact Farah is an Origin rake and Blues’ vice-captain makes the whole argument sound absurd, but Taylor is clear on his plans moving forward.

“All we know is Robbie will be there round one, and he’s been ripping in at training,’’ Woods said.

“He’s one of the fittest blokes I’ve met. The older he gets, the smarter and fitter he gets. Just the way he looks after his body, he’s done that much rehab for his back (over the years), and watches what he eats … he does all the one per centres.

“He’s come back with a brilliant attitude. And from how JT has been talking around the club, he still asks Robbie questions and how we can go better. They’re still having their one-on-one meetings and still talk.

Woods was one of the Tigers best in a troubled 2015 for the club.

“I haven’t spoken to Robbie about it. It that was me it would drive me insane. You’d go home and you’d have a million people asking you what’s going on, you come to training and get a million questions about what’s going on.

“I just want to make the eight next year. I’m sick of watching semi-final footy.’’

Woods is favourite to succeed Farah as captain for next year, an honour he’s happy to accept. But reaching September is his top goal. So is helping the Blues reclaim the Origin series where he’ll be joined by Farah and possibly a third teammate, fullback James Tedesco.

Woods, like Tedesco, had minor knee surgery during the off-season, and will resume full training next week.

After the departure of Keith Galloway, Marty Taupau, and the US troubles with sacked Matt Lodge, Woods finds himself a little light on forward partners.

He rattled off names like Dallas Graham, Ava Seumanufagai, Sauaso Sue, Ipswich Jets’ recruits Billy McConnachie and Rod Griffin, and even Manly’s Brenton Lawrence, who has been linked to joint venture.

“We’ll be right. We’ll surprise a few people,’’ Woods said.

I loved this part: “He’s come back with a brilliant attitude. **And from how JT has been talking around the club, he still asks Robbie questions and how we can go better.** They’re still having their one-on-one meetings and still talk.

What's interesting is that they didn't quote him dropping Lawrence's name despite having quoted him several other times in the article. They just said that he said it.

I hope it's true that we will be signing Lawrence, he's a handy player. In fact, if we can score both Lawrence and Hiku we might just have enough ex-Manly players to form a whole new winning culture! Then I'd be really happy

JT "If Robbie keeps training how he is there is no reason he won't be in the team in round one"

Can you link this quote…?

Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor has given his strongest indication that Robbie Farah will retain his NRL berth next season despite the contract saga which has dogged the club over the past few months.
>
"The players will be judged on their merits. If Robbie keeps training how he is there is no reason he won't be in the team in round one," Taylor said on Wednesday night.
>
"Matt Ballin has a knee injury that may or may not see him fit for round one. Whether he is or isn't, it's a matter of increased competition for the position. Everyone will be judged on their merits in that regard."
>
The Tigers have been heavily criticised for telling Farah he would be free to leave the joint-venture club in the off-season despite having two more years to run on his lucrative contract.
>
He is due to receive nearly $1 million per season from the club and has not done a deal with any other team to take up the remaining seasons on his contract.
>
Tigers prop Aaron Woods, who is tipped to succeed Farah as captain of the club, said he was trying to maintain a safe distance from the drama.
>
"We haven't bought into it much. There has been a bit of drama but to his credit he has been a professional. He is coming to training every day. We don't ask him questions and he doesn't talk about it and let it filter down to he boys."

JT spoke on 2ue tonight with John Gibbs. Confirmed that he and Robbie have been working really well in the past two weeks and that Farah has made the decision to stay with the club and that they are both keen to move the club forward. Gibbs asked him about the playing situation and Taylor said Ballin has got a knee injury and may not be ready for round 1 and even if he is if Robbie continues to keep training the way he is he may start - all players will have to earn the right to keep their positions as will Farah and Ballin. Also said he has a great relationship with the halves, and the club expects them to be the basis of their future,
Gibbs brought up that Taylor only wants players that want to play with the club and so was happy to let Marty go so the situation with Farah seems at odds with that.Taylor said there were a few players that they offered opportunity to look elsewhere and said Farah wants to stay and now they have the depth with new signings to ensure that all the players will be vying for their positions and he thinks that has had a positive effect on everyone, Talked about the captaincy said there were a few people in the mix Woods was one but they wanted to consider a few people in the leadership roles as well as looking toward the future Pretty much it - a little bit about the cap and how they will be in a better position next year - sick of the neg media talk and just wants to get on with it assured the fans to stick with them.
Who knows what to make of it - last interview I heard with him he said we hadnt signed Ballin, which may have been legit at the time however they were very close to it - but from that unless something changes dramatically Farah looks like he is staying.

Thanks telltsils.
Well at least things sound positive. Hopefully they stick solid when thinks get tough.

Yes - he said they are both professionals and while they are still working through things the communication is happening and they are both committed to get this team going forward. I havnt been his greatest fan but never doubted his desire to do well - just hope they get off to a good start. I have always thought they are a great bunch of lads - dont have a problem with the boys club mentality I believe it exists in all clubs - JT just has to get them on board and I hope he can do it

This actually sounds good. Just pick the best available player. I think that has to be Robbie.

Move Robbie on at the end of his contract as he isn't worth what he is being paid.
