With 15 minutes to go we were still in the match against the outstanding team in the comp. We're not an embarrassment. Our raw go forward is truly exceptional at times.
But It's really bewildering. You can just tell that the team is trying really hard, and the emotional investment is there, but once we are in attacking situations and in possession the team looks like it has no idea how it's going to score points. Not Brooks. The team.
There is nothing sneaky, or tricky or dangerous about how we play. No steps, no dummies, no mischief, no offloads, no footy. No one is sniffing around our back rowers when they are looking dangerous. We mostly run straight (rather well atm) and try hard not to make any mistakes. Not enough of our outside backs are looking up and thinking "Give me the ball, I'm going to win you this game". Maybe its just down to ability.
It feels like no one within our own team is expecting anything dangerous to happen when we attack. We can't just reach the end of our sets and give it to Brooks against a prepared defence and ask "Have you turned into Andrew Johns yet?". No halfback on this planet would have been decisive for us against the Bunnies tonight. I mean, did any of Souths tries come from what their Halfback did on the 5th tackle? I don't think so.
I don't think its down to who gets picked. Swapping players in or out won't solve this. It's more fundamental than that. We have to want to try and play footy on the front foot. It can't be done because the coach told us to try it.
Anyways, its the best team in the comp and we showed real ticker for most of the match. Just play a bit more footy, a bit more swagger, and lets get past this formulaic stuff. 2 or three little sneaky, or clever moments in this match, or a bit more backing up in support when needed and then those moments will come.
