LIVE GAME Round 14 v Panthers

Live Game Discussion
Thought that was one of our better games this season. We were centimetres away from winning it and had a few tough calls go against us. We were definitely short on muscle in the middle and we missed a few goals as well. All in all it was a good effort considering our line up.
Looking at the game constructively……. For the most part we tackled well and ran the ball well, however we did seem to struggle to get through the advantage line in A, and at times we simply can not dominate the tackle. This sees us slow to marker or even have no marker at all, allowing the opposition heaps of meters and momentum.
We have a real problem with our D in the centres and wings, especially Toa and Turuva. As for AD he is way too slow and his goal kicking is average at best. When you look at what the top centres in the game can do I can’t see how we can compete with AD.
We missed Pole and Twal today as well as the early season version of Hunt.
We need Taylan - hopefully announced this week but the longer it drags on the less confident I am

Benji drops Royce Hunt, then doesn't use his replacement for a single minute? Our middle was getting killed and it was 16v17 the whole game. Terrible gameplan

Don't like Benjis blaming of the refs too as it has our players becoming victims. So many times our momentum is killed because of players complaining to referees

May and Seyfarth are the worst for it. I don't think they realise, if you get up and actually try to play on instead of laying there complaining, you might actually get the call!

Just coming back to this. Gildart played for England...what happened there?
What about Snidest’s favourite player Noffa? Represented Samoa. Not saying representing another country isn’t as meaningful, because anytime you represent your nation it’s an honour. But the competition for spots isn’t quite at the same level is it? The only true flex for a player at international level is making the Australian team.

All the crying each week over the refs ( actually the touch judges called both incidents with Luai ) just distracts from other issues that I believe decides the gane … Im at the point where I expect them to get nothing every week and most of the 50/50 calls to go against them … it just seems to be the way it is and another challenge to overcome…don’t give them an excuse to blow a penalty and if they do then muscle up and defend your line …

The game was still there to be won regardless of those two calls ..neither call decided the match … unlike say the Kyle Feldt one in NQ a few years back … now that was a rort! The impact wasn’t as severe as the previous calls the week before which resulted in two sinbinnings

Things to work on

- the challenge was absolutely wasted early…it shouldn’t be risked in those circumstances
- the first Penrith try from a scrum was poor and passive defence and the second week in a row they have given up a try off the scrum… work on that over the bye Benj

- they need to be much smarter in the last few minutes of the first half…had ball in hand with 90 seconds to go attacking Penrith’s line… but still gave up the try … that was a killer …given their continued problems here … they really need to be laser focused just getting to the break up by 4

Two big moments from Sam Fainu - the first he hurt Tago running the ball at him. The second he rattled Liam Martin with a huge hit and the grimace on Martin's face as he was hit was not nice. I thought yet again he had another good game. It's great to have the three brothers in the team.

His defence is great…. His attack is not what it was last year … they need to persevere with him though and work on that combination with Luai

Our right side defence has been a liability since Nofa was there, score a hundred tries and let in 200.

What the hell is it, doesn't seem to matter who we put over there it's still crap.

Look I get what you are saying and it's criminal that Benji did not bring his props on.

That said, all 3 of the tries were scored by a winger, Thomas Jenkins.
First try looks like an overlap, the other two were a bit of freak.

Jenkins/Edwards also did the early 90m run which... yes our middles should have shut that down sooner.

I get that a weakness in the middle means the edges move in, yet it's still edge defense that lost this game.

Ultimately we got to keep practising our tackling. Our missed tackles are better, but still too high.

I posted up the hip drop on r/NRL and at first it seemed pretty obvious and most people were rightfully shocked it was missed but by the end of the night I was copping an absolute barrage for it haha.

Am I crazy? I feel like every time I watch the reply it just looks worse and worse. Some clown posted up the NRL rulebook and that makes it even clearer.

I don't know how people can view that tackle and not see a definition textbook hip drop. Some people are fixated on the "must make contact with the leg" but that's not actually necessary for a hip drop to explode a knee. It's about the weight drop twisting and damaging it. That tackle could have destroyed both Bula's knees with ease with it without contact.

And that aside, he quite clearly does make contact anyway?

I am truly gobsmacked.

We have never taken defense seriously. 2025 is a massive improvement on 2024/2023/2022 because our defense has increased a little.

A big part of that is Skelton and Turuva being good defensive wingers. Yet I wonder if we are still drilling those skills in?

The team represented the jersey and coach well yesterday against a quality team and experienced coach.
Disappointed to lose when it was another winnable game, and despite all the shoulda coulda's it was a good performance with new combos and a weakened pack.
Goal kicking the most significant difference.
Most of our tries are out wide. We need to coach our players to improve their position if possible. Skeltons try's position could have been improved. The only player guernsey within the area were ours.

I love Doueihi Great clubman. I think if not for all of his injuries, would have captained the club, but I can’t see a place for him moving forward. He has the speed of a turning ship. It was evident when he played in the halves. He’d see a gap, but needed five minutes to go through it, and then last night, we shifted the ball wide, and he found himself on the wing. He didn’t have a chance in hell. If we don’t buy an established centre, I really hope there is a chance Mason can be given a shot over the summer. He has to be there somewhere. This shouldn’t be a Galvin/Fainu situation where we can only keep one or the other. There should be a place for both these guys. If Fainu is going to go into the halves, that’s fine. But Mason has to be there somewhere too.
