Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens has challenged Tim Moltzen to take advantage of the NSW's lack of halfback options and play himself into Ricky Stuart's squad for the 2012 State of Origin series.

The 23-year-old, who back-tracked on a decision to move to St George Illawarra late last year and stayed with the Tigers, will start the new campaign in the No.7 shirt following Robert Lui's move to North Queensland.

Sheens admitted he was hugely disappointed to see Lui depart, having spent so much time helping him develop into one of the best young playmakers in the game.

But after Lui was charged with assaulting his girlfriend following the club's 2011 season mad Monday celebrations, and with the club under pressure from sponsors to release him, Sheens said there was little option but to move him on.

However, the veteran coach believes the versatile Moltzen, who has played mostly at fullback, can flourish in the halves alongside skipper Benji Marshall.

And he believes he should put current NSW halfback Mitchell Pearce under pressure for his place.

"With Moltzen and Marshall, we'll have the fastest halves combination in the game," Sheens told AAP.

"No other team is going to have more speed over 80 metres than that pair.

"If I'm Timmy, I'd be looking at Ricky's squad.

"He was included in his emerging Origin squad and to be able to play at seven there is a lot less opposition in that position than at fullback."

Sheens also revealed winger Lote Tuqiri could miss the first month of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery.

The former dual international will definitely sit out the first match of the season against Cronulla and possibly more as he makes slow progress in his recovery.

"He's had his thumb pinned and it is taking a bit of time," Sheens said.

"He's missed a fair bit of training and could be out for a few weeks as he gets back up to speed with the others."

Tigers' new big-money signing Adam Blair said the opportunity to line up alongside New Zealand team-mate Marshall was a factor in his decision to sign from Melbourne.

The versatile forward, who can play in the front or back row agreed to a deal worth around $500,000 a year, and admitted it was a tough decision to leave the Storm.

"It was a big decision to come here," Blair said.

"But it'll be good to play outside Benji, that was something that attracted me.

"It was also the chance to work under a great coach and also play in a side that plays an exciting brand of footy."

Yeh tim moltzen hope u have a great year this year all the best. And all the best tim sheens hopfully for a good year.

Moltz isnt a true halfback yet, but I agree with Sheens…he is a lot better than Pearce and a rip roaring start should see his name mentioned for SOO.

I think Pearce, Wallace and Sandow would be higher in the pecking order wouldn't they?

Won't be long before the anti - Moltz brigade get on this one….
Obviously his coach doesn't think he's lacking what's required for SOO - skill, heart ....and a backbone

It wasnt an anti Moltz brigade mate….it was an anti _**Moltz playing fullback**_ brigade. Now he is back in the halves you'll find the support for him will be back to normal.

I understand that Sheens wants to pump Moltzen up and show that he has faith in him but wouldn't it have been better to wait a few rounds and see how the bloke is going rather than put the pressure on him first up, what if he flops?

Cant see him flopping in the halves mate, he has pretty much played all his best footy for us there. He and benji will be making breaks and /or creating half chances all over the field. With the quality of our ballrunners out wide, those half chances will be converted more often than not.

New season, clean slate. Hope he has an utter blinder of a season and carries his finals series confidence throughout the season

Hope you are right Stryker I did like the way Moltz played half before he was injured a few seasons ago. I guess sheens knows him better than most and expects Moltz will rise with the motivation.

I think we can put to bed any confusion over who will be our halfback this year. Straight from the horses mouth now, Moltzen is our first choice.

Moltzen has all the skills for anywhere in the backline his best chance will be on the bench as a utility

Let's hope Moltz blasts into the new season with a string of awesome performances… then he only needs to move to the Dragons or the Rorters to get near the Blues squad :frowning:

NSW want a halfback who directs the attack and leads a team around the park.

Can't see Moltzen doing that. I expect him to play third fiddle to Marshall and Farah - making line breaks of short passes rather than vice versa.

Not saying it is necessarily a bad thing - it is just how he has played 'half' in the past.
