Stealthily, the RAAF took up options to purchase two additional P8 Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft. The RAAF will have 14 aircraft. The acquisition of additional airframes was foreshadowed in the Defence White Paper which included options for 3 additional airframes.

What is a Poseidon? See the youtube clip below. We should all be proud of this aircraft as the US and Aus shared in a cooperative programme for the aircraft's development which is based on the Boeing 737. Other nations have to purchase these aircraft through Foreign Military Sales.

Take nte of the fitment of the hydrocarbon sniffer on the P8 which can detect diesel exhaust fumes from conventionally powered submarines.

NUSHIP Supply arrives in Sydney Harbour for the first time. She was fitted with a Phalanx gun after with provison via a mounting plate to the fore. NUSHIP Stalwart, her sistership, will arrive in Australia in a few months.

What an awesome thread. I had just finished reading Christopher Pynes autobiography and he talks a lot about his time in defence industry and it was fascinating so to see some of this adds to that

Naval ships are always so Impressive. What’s the reason for this Paws?

Good news with the Civmec yard (Henderson Yard) in WA to receive more orders for Arafura Class hulls. The Defence Minister announced the bringing forward of the replacement of the Huon Class minehunters to the mid 2020s and a commitment to new hydrographic ships, This suggest the concurremt build of both the Arafura Class and Huon replacments which means the skilled worforce will need to be expanded.

For school leavers, this presents a great opportunity for highly skilled shipbuilding apprenticeships.

Hi Barra

This ship provides fuel and supplies for warships. It is based on an existing Netherlands design in service with the Spanish Navy as well ss a South American Navy.

It's sistership Stalwart is due to arrivemid year. Supply has historic significance as it was the name of one of the ships in the first fleet. Supply was off Cronulla recently and presented a great sight for all spectators.

More exciting news for Defence, with the Goverment announciing investment in new missile technologies.

Previously, the Goverment announced the purchase of LSRAM for use by the RAAF on the F/A18 Super Hornets and P8A Poseidon aircraft. LSRAM = Long Range Anti Ship Missile. We all wait now to see if this missile will be integrated to fire from the MK41 launchers on the Hobart Class destroyers and Hunter Class frigates or from deck launchers on these ships. The US Navy has selected the Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile to equip its new Constitution Class frigates. We may chose the same option for reasons of commonality and integration with our close ally.

Further, the Goverment will continue. investment in the ESSM Block 2 surface to air missile as well as the intention to acquire Raytheon SM-2 Block IIIC and SM-6 Block 1missiles. What this means is a huge jump in capability for the RAAF and RAN. Most Defence enthusiasts will be watching how this impacts the number of VLS launch tubes on the Hunter Class under construction. At present 32 are planned, but there have been rumours of the class being capable of accommodating 48 similar to the Hobarts.

I love this thread its fascinating. I see ont understand it all but its great abd everytime i see it jump into re ent updates im straight their

This is the Civmec construction and refit facility at Henderson Yard 50km south of Perth.

A picturesque location in a very beautiful part of Australia or is that WA?

This is the future HMAS Arafura, one of two ships of this. Class to be built at Osborne Naval Shioyard near Adelaide. The remaining ten to be built at Hendersob in WA.

Until the new Arafura Class enter serice, the RAN's existin patrol boats will continue in service. Go augment this force, 6 additional Cape Class patrol boats will be bult by Austral at its Henderson Yard facility in WA.

Our new submarine, the Shortfin Barracuda, otherwise known as the Attack Class will be the largest and most modern conve tionally powered submarines in the world when completed. Other nations are interested in the design as most conventionally powered submarines are built for European requirements, not the vas distances of the Pacific or Indian Oceans. I would encourage you to take the time to read the attached article which explains the design and requirements plus reasons for selecting the French Nuclear design as a starting point.

I know I keep emphasising this issue but if you have children, have them consider a career in shipbuilding. Besides the info already posted, the Govt has also announced more ships to be constructed for the RAN as well as a new graving dock in WA to supplement the Captain Cook Graving Dock in Sydney. In short, the following additional ships are to be built

Two Multi Role Sealift and Replenishment Ships
A Pacific Support Ship
An ice rated replacement for Ocean Protector for ops in the Southern Ocean. This ship is not an ice breaker but can work in light ice.

This is not shipbuilding but this clip never fails to give me a lift. This is an F111 aka a Pig at the Fairford Airshow in the UK in 1993. This aircraft was groudbreaking with its technology including the swing wing design, the Mach 2.5 top speed, terrain following radar which allowed these bombers to fly at 100ft above the ground, The fuel dump and lighting the afterburner is a show stopper.

Not military but the resupply of Casey Station is a challenging endeavour. The Everest is a leased vessel u til our new resupply icebreaker Nuyina arrives.

Ch9. reports the PM is about to pull the plug on the Shortfin Barracuda Submarine from France. We built the Collins Class in Australia and there is no reason why an improved Collins cannot be designed and built using Australian designers and builders. Hopefully there will be many opportunities for young men and women.

The cost blowout on the french sub is massive on all current indicators.Yet another poor choice by our so called "experts" in the military/government

Military hardware should not be acquired by politicians period. The barracuda was a stupid decision in the first place. Hopefully we can choose more wisely in the future.

I understand the issue is the tech transfer and 60% involvement of Aust industry in the construction.

On an exciting note, this is the stern section of HMS Glasgow being mated to the main hull on the Clyde River. Our Hunter Class frigates are based on this design but incorporate cutting edge Aust radar and US AEGIS CMS.

The link is to an article from the UK Defence Journal concerning the mating of the stern of HMS Glasgow to the main hull. The comments are always worth reading including the suggestion the two sections were araldited together. In the UK, the fact these ships are being built in Scotland and the push for independence has caused heated debate.

This clip is very cool, with the previous HMAS Hobart, also a destroyer of the Charles F Adams Class, at 36 knots off Sydney Heads. Hobart was almost 40 years old but was well maintained by the repairers at Garden Island as well as the crew.

Good Clip i remember doing a deployment with HMAS Hobart.
Funny enough i also served on Vampire was the last active crew on that ship and name has been preserved in the Operations room. Fond memories.....
HMAS Yarra, Vampire, Stuart in the 80's.
