De-lec subs can also be super quiet , but refueling hampers their traveling distance. ?

Well there you go, I read somewhere they were louder. Thanks for clarifying.

Transit speed and time on station would be significant benefits of nuclear powered submarines. Also just possessing at least 8 provides more of a deterrent.

12 would be better. 4-6 in dock/repair and in reserve and 6 always out at sea. I don't know but what is the ratio involve with subs and surface ship in the rotation etc?

It depends on the contract and what milestones (if any) have not been met. This has been building for a while. It certainly will have China off-guard.

Apparently the new subs will be based in WA. It may see US subs based there as well.

Which port suitable? Don't know W A well.

HMAS Stirling is the naval base in WA. Coincidently, it is located on Garden Island.

I live 15 km from Garden Island. See the Collins class now and then go up the water from work. Good spot for a base. They keep it tight as. Get arrested if you venture . close.

Jacinda is a gutless leader who was prepared to throw the 5 eyes intelligence alliance under the bus so as not to upset her friends in China. She is virtue signalling now because she knows that this is going to upset China and she is signalling to her friends in the CCP.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-56970640

It's hard to disagree with you. Jacinda does seem disinclined to upset the Chinese. NZ's recent non-commitment to 5 eyes activities is worrying.

She won't be able to whinge they become subject of surveillance then.

Australia declares war on NZ ...lamest war ever ......

I lived about 20 kms from the Amberley base at Ipswich ...and you could still occasionally hear them late at night doing whatever they were doing at that time .....the noise closer must have been insane

Probably 50ft off the ground drills.. lol

Someone told me that when you heard the noise was when they were burning off the last of a fuel load ......

I've seen aerial photos of the base. It is beautiful and it is good to know it will be utilised to its full potential with the new subs.

It will be interesting to learn which sub will be selected. The US Virginia Class is ongoing while the last of the RN Astutes completes in 2026. Many Defence types believe the RN Astute will be selected and fitted with the US Combat System. Boris Johnson referred to jobs being created in the UK during his speech. The UK design has smaller a(98) than the US design.

NZ is riding on the back of Aust. While our country is pouring the extra billions of dollars into Defence, NZ knows that they will benefit from this new alliance as well, Because it will be in the best interest of Aust. to defend NZ from any future foreign attacks. If Aust. is attacked then NZ is gone, but no country will attack NZ without also knowing that this would also mean attacking Aust, And this security for NZ should not be given for free.

Lost in the submarine announcement is the purchase of Tomahawk cruise missiles for the Hobart Class destroyers and presumably to be fitted to the new SSNs. Also the RAAF is to receive the JASSM-ER (range over 900 km) with suggestions this could mean the purchase of B21 long range strike bomber. There are lots of announcements today.

National defence announcements and acquisitions are usually quite good for your standings in the polls.

No doubt political mileage will be made out of this by the President and both PMs. Scomo is so on the nose due his vaccine debacle he will grab any opportunity to boost his polling. This has been reported worldwide which gives an indication of its signficance.

Don't disagree but political memories are often short memories. I've lost count of the number of times I've heard electors were waiting to attack the government with baseball bats only to see the government returned.

I've walked around the base. It's a nice base and appears to be well set out. Having that causeway linking the island to the mainland is a good security feature i guess.

This is the HMS Astute.

It is likely the new RAN submarine will be based on this design.

An RN officer describes building an Astute -

Stages when it's like blacksmithing and stages when it's like brain surgery.

Australia should declare that we promise not to use the submarines to enter NZ territorial waters, not even to defend NZ.

It's not even worth responding to IMO, no one is ever going to attack NZ lol.

Interesting thought experiment, nuclear fusion is gaining traction, does NZ's non-nuclear stance apply to fusion technology? It would be foolish to abandon net gain energy generation.

With Jacinda begging for China's belt and road initiative and throwing 5 eyes under the bus to save face with China, there will be no need for NZ to be attacked.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/300036015/nz-still-plotting-place-in-chinas-belt-and-road

I get poorer nations signing up for belt and road but I can't for the life of me understand why NZ and Victoria would sign up. Trying not to be a sinophobe here but I wouldn't trust the government of China on anything. Most Chinese people I've met here and travelling through China are lovely people but the government are very different from the average Chinese citizen.

Nuclear fusion is still decades off from commercial reality, if ever. They won’t even have the theoretical 20 Tesla coil (magnet) ready until 2035 at the earliest to see if a sustained reaction is even possible.

Really if China wants to attack they will. This is just a photo op for a few polies after a rough 2 years. Do you think the announcement of this will prevent a Chinese invasion? Oh they will have these subs in 10 years time? Crap we better put off those invasion plans.
Really if they were keen you have told them to do it in the next few years.
