Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The MatPack will need some support,,if Cleary continues with Aloiai and Sue as impact we need at least another experienced solid worker Prop or 2…Brenton Lawrence would be good on a 2 year deal...

Or for Felise and/or Tatola to step up...

Yep, Brenton would be great for us. Most will point out his injury history with his back but seems to be doing pretty good at the moment for Manly

With our backline… From my understanding of reading the Tui thread his deal is done and he'll definitely be in tigers colours by 2018, we still need a winger and a centre..... We have $ so I think we should be going for Blake Ferguson, as for a centre Mahe Fonua is looking likely but depending on the development of Masters Id like to see a centre paring of Suli/Masters, if his form drops as a centre Id move him onto the bench to come on as a forward and look to sign Hopa as a centre would go hard for him too.

1\. Tui Lolohea
2\. David Nofalumo
3\. Moses Suli
4\. Esan Masters/Will Hopa/ Mahe Fonua
5\. Blake Ferguson
6\. Josh Reynolyds
7\. Luke Brooks

With our pack

I think Paasi and a second rower of either CHN or Elliot will complete our pack.

8\. Ben Matulino
9\. Matt Mcwrllick
10\. Russell Packer
11\. Chris McQueen
12\. Adam Elliot/ CHN
13\. Elijah Taylor

14\. Jacob Liddle
14\. Agnatius Paasi
16\. Josh Alioia
17\. Sauaso Sue

I don't think we're a long way off, exciting times ahead for 2018 never been so excited for a season in my life even though we're not even halfway through 2017 (God that's sad lol), but I have comeplete faith in Ivan and trust that the bus is going in the right direction to lead us into finals footy in the very near future.

Would definitely have Rowdy before Sue (who should be let go imo).

I believe very heavily that Sue will benefit so much with playing with Matulino and Packer, I think he'll really thrive next to those two, I'd offer Sue a two year deal with the second year in our favour and if he fails to do well first year we should ship him off. Sharks will probably take him, they have a thing for our front rowers.

Yeah either Lawrence or Paasi will do me. Brenton has to be the fastest prop in the game I reckon.

Peats is obviously a better option than MM and Liddle…. But there's bigger issues we need to worry about our hookers are doing a decent job.

But wouldn't you rather a high quality 80 minute hooker than a 50 minute hooker and a 30 minute hooker? Makes our bench options so much stronger.

MM is off contract and Liddle can play in reserve grade. Doesn't mean we miss out another prop and a centre, we have a heap of cap room.

Liddle is considered to be the club's future at hooker, and they aren't going to spend significant coin on one who will still be there when Liddle takes over (ie 2019 at the absolute latest) unless Liddle does something to lose that expectation. No point discussing this any further.

So Dane Gagai has not taken up his option for 2018 with Newcastle, and has informed them he is leaving…...

Who was the knucklehead on here that was adamant that he will never ever leave Newcastle, and had first hand info from Gagai's and his family?

And does anyone know where he has signed? I heard Souths were close. Would have been a great signing for us.

Probably Demps. Happy to be corrected otherwise.

I have to admit I reckoned he wouldn't leave because Newcastle would throw the kitchen sink at him but I guess every man has their price.

Well said 2041\. Liddle still has 12 to 14 years ahead of him. I'm happy to stick with him. Coming along nicely

The Parramatta Eels are out of the race for Nathan Peats, with the club unwilling to up their $500,000 per season deal after Peats rejected the offer.

SMH.com.au is reporting that Peats is seeking a deal worth $600,000 and as yet, has been unable to find a buyer, with both the Gold Coast Titans and Eels offering deals worth much less.

Even a State of Origin call-up for the NSW Blues hasn’t been enough for Parramatta to increase their offer to former hooker Peats and he now has lost the leverage of multiple clubs bidding for his services.

The Titans are currently awaiting to see if Jarryd Hayne takes up his $1.2 million option for next season.

If Hayne does take up the option, the Titans have very little room in their salary cap to increase their offer for Peats.

Sorry Nathan you ain't worth that much! Some of these guys have an over-inflated opinion of themselves and their ability.

I think Peats is a reasonably good DH but I also think he is, at the moment, at the top of his game.
Certainly not worth anything like 600k - more 400 or 450 at a stretch.

However I am not sure why McIlwrick can't play anything like 80 minutes. Is it because of his dodgy knee(s)?
I mean if that is the reason, we are carrying him. When he is on the field he is every bit as good as Peats in my opinion.

Which brings us to Liddle - Avo, you reckon play him in reserves. I disagree, on one hand it may be that he is getting 20 minutes plus to prepare him for the NRL full time and the other reason MM is getting shorter time. I think Liddle is our answer from 2018 onwards, good defender in the middle, good speed when he takes off, a good backerupper - he needs more experience, a bit more weight in the off season and he will be our number 9 for many years to come.

A spine of Lolohea, Reynolds, Brooks and Liddle looks pretty good and efficient to me.

We don't need Peats or another hooker, but we do need at least one more Prop, another back rower and another centre. Not to put too finer point on it, a good goal kicker, not someone in the mid 60% but someone up in the 8o's.

My point is that carrying 2 hookers (in my opinion) doesn't work. I don't deny that Liddle has the potential to be a very good player, but we have been burnt hard by investing in potential (this year is a classic example). Do we continue to invest in a player that might not turn out to be a great player or pay slightly more for someone who is, as you say, at the top of their game? I haven't seen enough out of Liddle to suggest he's going to be a superstar.

As for MM, I like him and think he's effective on the field when he's there, but if he can't play 80 he's not worth keeping. Hooker should be an 80 minute position.

Peats on the other hand, is, as you say, at the top of his game. He's 26 years old and has years left in him (barring injuries). I for one would love us to buy a player at the top of their game, not one that has potential or that is past their best. I think he'd be a great buy, but that's just my opinion.

A Lolohea

I get scared now when we are betting on a junior holding his spot in the spine for 10 years. Liddle looks good to me. McIlwrick also looks good. I think Liddle has a much better running game and we need that.

Peats is though the NSW SOO hooker. Mind you we had one just as good last season.

I wouldn't off Peats a contract because we are strong in that position but it goes to show that the market can only take so many contracts about $500k. We have Brooks on over $500k. Brooks is still learning.

I suggested Peats is at the top of his game imo. However at this stage I do not think he is any better than MM and Liddle is not far behind.

I think Liddle has gone past the potential stage - you can see that he has the game it is just putting the finer points to it, a little weight and another season (2017) will bring him up to NRL standard. I am not saying he is going to be a superstar but a more than capable hooker, at least as good as Farah in his prime.

That'll be good enough for me.

Peats has not knocked down the door for origin, he was basically one of the last standing after it was decided that a selfish, slow, sideways playing dummy half was not part of this years game plan

Peats has a limited game and is a jerk. I'm not interested. If they want to run one hooker they can develop Liddle into an 80 minute player like the Eels have done with Pritchard this season.
