WESTS TIGERS EYEING HANDY BACK-UP

Journeyman hooker Zach Dockar-Clay is getting close to earning a deal with the Wests Tigers.

The 25-year-old former Junior Kiwi, who has had stints at the Eels, Panthers, Hull KR and Blacktown, could be a useful back-up for Michael Maguire with his ability to play both hooker and halfback.

He has yet to play in the NRL but looked good in his stint in England, helping Hull KR achieve promotion to Super League in his one season at the club in 2017.

I may be a poor judge but i have not seen him do anything notable on the field to deserve a position in our top 30

I’d be assuming he might take Walters spot. I really don’t think either would get much first grade this year anyway. Just a minimum wage spot held by a handy reserve grader.

Guess that would officially rule out Hastings?

I would say Hastings is absolutely no chance, at least for this year.

Pretty much. And unless Brooks or Doueihi don’t perform, probably for good

No idea why my post was downvoted lol what a flog

I saw someone post something about Amone possibly knowing Madge yesterday (which is completely plausible) and someone downvoted it. There are some pretty kooky things that people downvote on here.

Given what's available and what team needs I am happy with

28. Amone
29. Dockar Clay
30. Tuilagi upgrade

Allan Fitz can take Tuilagi development spot.

If Walters who is injured moves to Broncos then we have a free spot this season.

Love a settled side and fighting for a spot in 17. Hasn't happened much in our history.

I believe Tamou, Big O and Jimmy the Jet will inspire the younger players to perform better this season.

I believe with Tuki Simpkins and Daine Laurie we have X factor players.

Mikaele is a young forward who has been thrown to the wolves. Most if not all young props begin their careers off the bench and play a small amount of minutes. Due to our poor pack in recent years Mikaele has been the main man the Tigers have looked at to make metres. No senior forwards leading the way at all in recent years. He will be a completely different player with big senior forwards around him

Well he better, because he's going to be quickly overtaken otherwise.

All our middle forwards are going to be under pressure. Stef, Mikaele, Tuki Simpkins and Musgrove can all have an impact. Twal, Joe O and Tamou are good but more workers.

I'd play Tuki Simpkins off the bench and at lock. I reckon he looks heaps better than Twal at lock. I suppose you play both of them for the moment.

Someone is missing out. I reckon Mikaele deserves a bench spot based on his trial form.

Tuki has an X factor about him.

Don’t know what it is but you can just tell this guy knows how to throw his weight around - and I love it!

I think what he has is big core strength, combined with his height / long arms. Especially the try that resulted from his flick offload - that was right in front of us and he went heavily into the carry, but still got his arms free in the tackle. IIRC he took 3 tacklers with him. He seems to be able to give the ball space despite being tackled.

Now considering he's still a big lumpy kid, it's impressive to have that ability to free himself in tackles. I'm contrasting this to other young guys like Stefano or Tuilagi who are very powerful but are looking for heavy contact to pump legs and fall on their front.

I don't want to go overboard because he's still fresh, but very impressive in the trials. I remember seeing Aaron Woods play his first Foundation Cup and you just knew he had special talent.

What's actually surprising to me is that Tuki is not still pursuing rugby. He's got a real rugby forward build and a sort of hunched loping running style. He looked ready to contest a ruck every tackle.

Very John Eales type physique and mobility now I think about it.

Have to agree Tuki is more than a bash and barge forward , the offload is the money ball while attracting multiple defends ..it takes lot to get me interested in a forward but this fella certainly has !

Reminds me of a young sonny bill.
We have to be careful with this one, with regards to his development.
I'd dare say the roosters will be calling in a few years.
I reckon he's earned the starting lock spot

Two games against reserve grade quality opposition, yes he looks good and fingers crossed he will be a very good player but a young Sonny Bill might be a big call.

Don't we still have a fair bit of cash available circa $600k +, even after purchasing Amone?

Imagine we would have to keep one slot open in the top 30 should the right quality player became available...

For once we seem to have good coverage for all positions. Probably a real class edge running forward would top things off, but unless they were top shelve I would be looking from with in the stable

Mikaele was playing injured most of last year.

He’s got deficiencies but the potential is there. I’d keep him if his demands are not silly.

There would be many well performed clubs after a prop the calibre of Mikaele. He is young for a first grade prop. Also he has his act together not like his former Keebra team mate at the Broncs.

Maybe Paws, but he has been available for 4 months now and nobody has made their move yet.

? we have been caught out in the past trying to recruit pre June 30 with no cap room.
I can’t see Mbye, Walters or Packer on the roster by June 30.

Mbye is overpaid but too good for NSW Cup, Packer is in his final year with heaps of young forwards needing experience, Walters wanted by Broncos in final year of his deal.

We really do have good depth and it is exciting. An injury to Brooks, JTJ or Laurie would hurt but there are no positions where its season over with an injury as there is someone ready to step in.

That's where Blore will fit in nicely.

We saw his D last season and it shows he's not afraid of contact. What we haven't seen yet is his ball running and ability to bust the line, which is what he was known for coming through the grades.

Just needs an injury free stretch

So much has changed in just a few months. Looking at the players off contract for 2022, and i can't see many that would improve our squad. Players like Jake Friend would have got our keen interest, as well as many others, but we have such a strong forward pack now ,i don't see a vacancy. Our backs have some doubts about them, time will tell, and we have some quality in CC. Who do the forum members think is worth chasing that will be off contract ?
