Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

So we gave our marquee man permission to negotiate with clubs to clear up much needed cap space. Now someone wants to pick him up and we don’t have a shortlist of replacements lined up and we’ll probably have to decline the other clubs offer. Seriously. Queue the comments from people willing to forgive Mbye because we beat a decimated Knights team.

It would also be as crazy as not swapping Talau for JAC

Even that can be justified on the basis of relative salaries. If JAC is ok value at $600k and Talau is a bargain at $200k you're arguably better off with the latter.

Keeping a bench utility on $900k a year that you've been shopping round for months because you think (almost certainly wrongly, and on the basis of the outcome of one game) that he might help you scramble up to eighth would be about the worst roster move in the history of the comp.

I would much prefer JAC at $600k than Talau at $200k

I’d much prefer talau tbh, I think he can cover wing centre and if really desperate he could play in the second row. With JAC he can play wing but wanted fullback and that’s it. Talau offers more IMO. I think the biggest thing with JAC is he offers a big personality which the club is really missing, it seems stupid to say but a big personality can really make a team gel and pick players up when things aren’t going the way they want them too

Fair enough. I think JAC is the best winger in the comp. At this stage I think Talau is an average centre and a below average winger.

I'm beginning to worry about Talau as a long term prospect. There's been the odd glimpse but he hasn't done anything where I've been taken aback by his abilities. For a player Marshall said was the best prospect he's seen since Tedesco he hasn't exactly delivered.

Benji also said a while ago that his brother was a far better player than himself......

Manu from the Rorters is a similar build to Talau and not that quick but has upskilled to make up for it. TT might need to do similar to progress.

TT hit that hole like a rangy backrower last week. Watch this space.

I guess if you put it to them that we would need a player in return or front up more money it might be a different tune but to just say no? Odd

Assemble a competitive 30 man roster would be a start. With Billy Walters and Mbye only there in spirit we have a weak 26 man squad.

On Today’s post game 2MMM interview with Nicho Hyens he said he had no offers for next year.
Sounded like the Broncos would like him.

Well the last thing we need is to be in a bidding war for a fringe first grader the Broncos want.

He wouldn't be fringe in too many other sides. It's taking Paps to keep him out of the Storm team...

He'd block the progression of one of our very good juniors. Hynes won't help us bridge the gap to the top teams. Our outstanding juniors will. Let's not fritter what money we do have away on fringies.

Seriously P&C, you have to put this one eye approach to our juniors into perspective, they are not FG ready and they may come on in a few years, BUT we need the players now.

So we invest in juniors and then block their path to the NRL? That is an excellent way to deliver them to other predatory teams.

You can't have a team full of half cooked pies.
You need fully cooked bacon and cheese pies from Yatala with a few half cooked's in the oven.
Hynes is fully cooked and delicious.
Juniors that are good enough will still find their way out of the oven.

Laurie is better than Hynes at fullback. Deouihi is better than Hynes at 5/8 and also centre.

As for juniors, I'd much rather Ogden and Talau run out in the cwntres for WTs.

If the Broncos are interested in Hynes, let them have him. He is not good enough to get into a bidding war.

You would rather but the other 99.999% wouldn’t.

Is there anyone on this forum who wouldn't want to see Ogden run out in the centres for WTs?

ME! - plodder.

Have you watched him Russ, he looked pretty good when he stepped up to CC last week

Where did it say that?
Hastings was his replacement hence why Mbye talk was for next year. Now a crisis happens at the Dragons and we should jump and let Mbye go now??

Give us Dufty or Lomax and give them Mbye. If they are desperate and want him early we should get something in return.

We still have 2 spots free on the roster as well.

I’d argue it’s younger and there’s potential there, still lacking guys who know how to win.

Why are people carrying on about Hynes or anyone else from Melbourne after last weeks game? When we consider Melbourne played against 12 men for 75 minutes. Anyone playing fullback for the Storms would have looked like a star. Go Weststigers!

We just seem to be stuck in purgatory, the Roosters have a hooker crisis and next minute there’s former All Blacks stars knocking on the door, we have a bloke we can’t get rid of on a million a year because there’s nobody to replace him, we sit there at the bottom of the ladder with roster spots unused. We’re so far off the pace it’s not funny.

If Hynes goes to the market place there will be half a dozen or more clubs throwing money at him. I would imagine Concord is a very unlikely destination given our history at luring players when there are multiple clubs after the same signature.
Personally I think he would be a great signing

When your losing you don’t attract talent unless its the talent wanting to get regular games = fringe or rookie players. That’s reality. Until we drive talented kids and get performances flowing we will stay like this for a long time.

As to having no one able to replace him, we have already told him we don’t want him. Same as Walters and a few others. 4 weeks ago he apparently talked and thats it. No way should we give him up for free - the dragons don’t’ have heaps of cap space as McInnes is on their cap this year but not next year. So for him to play for the dragons we have to pay most of his wage. How does that benefit us in anyway?

Our youngsters are deadset good. We have done well to secure them. The challenge is keeping them and giving them a sniff of first grade.

I truly believe our best years are in front of us (not hard given the past). It will take some time but we will start to see more wins on the board as we develop more skill from below. That will attract the bigger names.

But its a 'work in progress'. Will take time. 2022 will be better than 2021.

Maybe I’m missing something...is the “offer” from the dragons for Mbye to go there for free while we pay his salary? I thought surely
they would pay pro rata for the remainder of the year or at least a portion of his wage...?
Does anyone actually know???

So say he is on 800k. Contract started in November so we have already paid 7 months out of 12 for this year. So about 470k leaving 330k to pay this year. My guess would be given we already have 700k left this yr plus that then we would be best to say Dragons pay him $0 this year from their cap instead of say 180k but that they pay an extra 180k next year - mayby 580k instead of 400k of his contract leaving us only need to pay 220k next year to Mbye in the cap. Then qe might say oh well lets front load that into this years cap meaning we pay him say 1.2m (800k plus 220 of next years) this year but dont have him on next years cap
