I think we have to remember the last 2 years we have lost our best player at the end of the season that really really hurts if we had matterson at the club still playing the way he was when he was here it would be huge

He left because of Madge, and the Eels came in with more money after they heard he was not happy

Yeah I know it’s just a shame

Bulldogs offered more money for Burton plus had the player coach connection, my concerns about Madge are his team selections and failure to improve the team in the areas that need it,

* Choosing Leilua and Roberts as starting centres over Momirovski who would of been the smarter choice

* Nofoaluma re-signing (4years) who has always had defensive issues

* Team selections and use of the bench often not making sense

* Releasing Thompson who in hindsight is a better winger than any other player here

Every player you mentioned is pretty ordinary though. Switch the names around and I reckon we're still at the same place.

None of the players are game changers, Joey and Roberts at least had the potential to be and that is why they were signed. As an attempt to get an ordinary squad into the finals.

These were shortcuts in recruitment much like the shortcuts we take on the field. These guys can’t hold down a club because they’re not mentally tough. Bellamy sends young players out to work on building sites to find out their character. We should have given BJ an Oporto ‘s apron.

I don't have a problem with either signing as they were short term signings for a specific purpose.

To run 14th? I get your point but it needs to end. Need to start signing winners to teach the kids who can play (supposedly)

The winners said no, these were signings with good upside that could have made a difference if they worked out. If not there was an easy out when we will be in a position to try again with the better targets. The Roberts signing in particular was a good risk to take.

Come on mate he’s copping about 4 grand a week to do nothing. We could have a young kid learning the ropes right now. It was always doomed.

Who Talau? Roberts is on close to minimum wage, we are about $750k under the cap, with 2 spots still vacant and all reserve grade players being eligible for firsts grade. His signing held no one back.

We should have been looking for a young speedster not a washed up hack.

Nothing stopped us from both.

18 year old kid who tore us shreds on Friday has changed clubs recently. Doubt we even knew his name.

Complete nonsense

Madge literally said they knew about him 2 years ago

I've also seen the talent identification system they use, there isn't a player they don't know about.

do they use a dartboard?

I wouldn’t mind guessing they’re putting way too much influence on stats. The good teams sign guys based on character and propensity to work hard. Not many spreadsheets can capture those details.

We don't sign based on stats.

Maybe we should then, whatever we’re doing, change it.

The biggest issue is we are struggling to attract the elite senior talent, we are doing very well with the junior identification. The elite talent issue is very complex to address and I don't know if it is something that will change until we are playing better football.

If we’re going after the best junior talent we certainly missed on Burton, Walker, Walsh, Schuster, Suaalii etc. when our our young guns going to catch fire?

You are correct. We haven't signed any elite juniors, or if we've tried we've failed.

We do have a bunch of talented youngsters who are still very much project players. Tuki is a player with a lot of potential but getting in the pack and still very young he needs a bit more time in NSW cup.

We have 600k to spend this season. That could get us practically any player that's looking for a new home. Origin or anyone for half a season. Or we target the next Burton, Walker, suaalii etc and try get them ASAP.

Our juniors are promising but nothing more. The same group at Penrith three or four years ago were destroying teams. They were not giving up big leads to draw games. Without being to negative, I doubt more than two of our current Flegg side will play 100 NRL games. Could be way off the Mark but remembered Sheens saying what the strike rate with promising juniors was, and it was low

During the period where U20’s was telecast the average was around 3 players going on to have successful careers. Not sure if that’s changed much. Obviously there were teams that came through with more but in general it’s pretty low.

3 players who I consider just below Marquee but top class who I want us to chase. Brandon Smith, Nicho Hynes and Jaydon Su'a

I posted in about October we should be all in for Brandon Smith. He's the sort of character, both on and off the field, that will generate the culture we need.

I'd have been happy to keep Harry but I actually think the Cheese's game has more qualities we need.

Hynes and Su'a are good but Smith would be my primary target. I believe he'll attract players - he's the sort of character people want to be around.

We don't get Cheese.
Keep dreaming.

Story of our recruitment I’m afraid ..... we had a go at quite a few .... what we got is no hits all misses (strike out) ....

Latrell
Lomax
Saab
Walsh
JAC
Suaalii
Schuster
etc. Etc.

Latrine i can live with

JAC is a idiot

Walsh, Schuster, Lomax is wish we got

Suaali overrated imo

Pretty sure everyone in the comp maybe bar panthers would be happy with a walsh, schuster and lomax.

Did all the other suitors miss out as well?

Sounds like Clifford to knights is very close... could mean Walters to broncos and hopefully someone in return from broncos

Forum members thoughts ?

Our troubles start without the ball. Our defence has remained consistently appalling.

I thought our middle is OK, its the edge that is the problem?

Definitely the edges

Middle defence is poor but edges are close to the worst I’ve ever seen in NRL.

We need 2 hardcore back rowers .

2 new wingers who can jump and defend and have pace

2 centre’s who can hit hard with pace

And a decent hooker

And people want to blame the coach. Geez.

Show me one winger, centre, second rower or hooker he didn’t sign or re-sign?

And your point is?

It’s his team. If he doesn’t have the coaching ability to get them playing their best, he should walk.

You can only sign what is available at the time. A number of them won’t be here next year, simples.

I doubt he’ll be here next year anyway.

Who do you consider is an upgrade that’s available

Morris and Flanagan are the obvious ones imo but there’s a fair few coaches available that would be good choices

Would take a very close look at Ciraldo

Absolutely

Risky all coaches are great under panthers team. Ivan for example

Ivan’s a really good coach, we just hate him because he walked out on us.

You’re joking right.

Did you see the players he left us with that were all managed by his own manager.

Unethical coach.

They may have done well under him.

He could have gotten us to ninth again.

Jeeze! Don’t think I couldn’t mentally last 3-4 years buying work mates / mates lunches/beers putting bets on us to win... it’s already been around 2-3 years on continuous lunches already for me hahah.. could be 10 to my 2 lunches/beers I’ve given out :/

Many thought the game was moving towards smaller more mobile forwards. With the new crackdown on high tackles, this could change the scenario again. The donkeys big guys steamrolled the chickens last night.

I miss the days when we we still had hopes of making the 8 after April.

Agree and they also tried to get him in a player swap but Broncos didn't agree. Then the warriors swooped in with a long term deal and a 1st grade opportunity.. You cannot get them all.

That is why it is folly to judge recruitment on the players you miss.

The ones we got are running 14th and will be lucky to get 15th. Can we judge on that?

Go for it mate, but you are looking at this from a very shallow angle.

Yep, I know mate. I’m burned out waiting for a sign of life from the club. The only conclusion I can draw is ‘change the cattle making the decisions’

If I’m wrong I’ll actually be happy because it’ll mean I can stop complaining about it.

Believe me I get it, I feel the same, 10 years without finals is not acceptable. I have actually discussed recruitment with Hartigan, that is why I am willing to put some faith in his ability to turn this place around. He is not going to get it right 100% of the time but I like how he goes about his job.

I got close to having a chat to him but it just didn’t eventuate, shortly after the Matterson debacle. I think my words to him would go something like this, we need a game-changer. Pay Victor Radley or someone like that double what they’re worth, somebody who will attract decent footy players. Do it now.

How do you think that would work out? Everyone in the team hates the new guy on $1.4M who is reducing what they earn and reducing the quality of the rest of the group. The fans hate him because he can't possibly live up to the expectation that would come with the salary.

If the merry go round is circular wouldn’t we be getting someone from the Knights? They have a few young fast backs.

Exactly, and it what Wests Tigers have done in the past and has never worked out well for the club.

The thought was it would be Isaako from the Broncos. I know that isn't roundabout like motion but there is no other reason for us to release Walters is there. Unless we're going to promote three players to fill our top 30 spots.

I reckon Blake Green might retire if Clifford goes to Knights early so they don't have a need to release anyone.
