There’s is some NRL hierarchy chatter today about the importance of having more balanced rosters and have a competition where teams begin each season with genuine hope for competitiveness.

That includes the possibility of a rookie draft. So Clubs with some $$$ cap space like WT may hold off some money to see how any of this that pans out and if it impacts 2022 recruitment year.

A draft, with certain conditions, would be a great idea.

But there's absolutely zero chance anything of this magnitude getting off the ground in time for 2022.

No thank you, last thing I want to see in the game is tanking.

I haven't given it too much thought but I have always been a fan of the idea of a draft, as it seems to even things out so much in the AFL. Is 'tanking' an issue, when times are out of the hunt (and so can guarantee good talent from the draft). Serious question.

A team that plays a tanking side at the end of the season has an advantage. I don't mind a draft in the NFL, but I follow Rugby League in a different manner, there are better ways to fix the parity of the competition than a draft.

Tanking to get preferential draft picks could be a problem. But I don't think the current distribution of talent across NRL clubs is working for the good of the game. The draft has been ruled to be a restriction of trade, but I can't see a better option. What better ways did you have in mind?

Just properly reward teams that develop their own talent, huge cap discounts to local juniors or players brought to the club by a certain age.

A draft destroy one of my favourite parts of supporting Rugby League, watching a junior coming through the ranks. Imagine robbing the Penrith guys of representing their local club, why would you do that? It would destroy the fabric of the game.

Fair enough. I accept that clubs should be able to develop and hold on to talent. Maybe salary cap discounts are a better alternative. Given that we've had prior court rulings against a draft system, that alternative is possibly more workable anyway.

God there is some negative people on this forum.

So it's not ok to be negative about the club ...but people neg rep .....this place is just full of hypocrites of the highest order .....gutless ......argue your point instead

I am being negative because I am using my head. I have looked at our roster, I have looked at our recruitment and I have looked at how the club has reacted to a terrible decade.

My heart is always positive about my team, thinking 4 unknown super stars are going to turn up out of the blue, but my head says…your dreaming

Will being negative improve anything?

They really need to do something about this contract situation. This Nov 1 thing is just stupid.

What would you change? To be honest I think it is too early.

I don't think a draft will ever happen, but they do need to shift the CBA somehow. As it is, it's far too easy for a player to agitate and get a move to a better team and/or more money - and the old club gets absolutely nothing out of it.
Even if they bring in a trade period or something similar to the AFL.
Negotiating a full year before the end of contract is ridiculous as well, and doesn't happen in many other competitions (if any).

The current system is far too unbalanced and allows the rich clubs to horde talent, maintaining the status quo.

I think a simple change is once you sign a contract you shouldn't be allowed to negotiate a higher contract with another club during the same period, so even if you go to another club you can not be paid more.

This is a little off topic so I will set up another thread for this discussion as it in something that interests me.

Luke ganer done a recent podcast, 42 podcast or something, spoke positively about the club said usual likes madge and wants to stay with the club.

Not sure if I believe him tho.

Sensible bloke, hope he has a good year.

Being positive and then getting overwhelmed by an underperforming season does far more harm in my opinion

I didn’t downvote any of your posts but I don’t know why people so negative bother coming here every day.

It’s all been said already about the last 10 years. If you have no hope for the future wouldn’t you be better off doing something else rather than torturing yourselves here shooting anyone down who tries to look for something positive to look forward to next year?

Didn't say you did ......but my point is neg repping is gutless ...if you are incapable of making an argument one way or the other

Why we should get rid of neg repping ...we recently had a situation when someone had gotten 10 neg reps in less than 30 minutes

Too many pussies on here don't own a set .....gutless ....

Are you saying downvoting someone is gutless ? I don’t get the connection sorry .
If someone downvotes me , it’s probably because I said something controversial , or polarising . It’s the nature of the beast. It hardly means the person I disagree with is gutless . They might be , but it’s the things they say ,and the way they behave that will inform that. Not clicking on the red thumbs down .

Well as far as I'm concerned that we get rid of neg repping or the person thats neg reps is known .....

Neg repping does nothing in it's current form .....maybe it's causing some of the issues that seem to have overtaken the Forum lately

If you disagree with a post ..state your reasons why ...don't hide behind the thumbs down ....I think I've negged rep 2 people from memory ...Geo (who knows I have done it as he is a Mod ) and Hobbo to annoy him and he asks Geo who neg repped him anyway lol .....

I don’t see why you care so much is all I’m saying . It’s your choice to put your idea or thought into the ether .

Not everyone could be bothered to write war and peace to explain why they think what was said was garbage . The negative thumbs down is a pretty good indicator that was said was not well liked . If your into double figures , and it bothers you , then maybe a look into the idea or thought you had should be your first move . As in ask yourself “ why does everyone dislike that” . Rather than focusing on the downvotes .

Like when I post in the Luke brooks thread . I know it’s going to piss off the haters , but I say it anyway . Because I understand why they hate it . I just don’t care . They can downvote all they want .

Or in other threads ,I’ve said some bad stuff , copped downvotes , and it made me check myself. And I’ve had to backtrack and apologise .
Sometimes it’s cathartic to realise your internal monologue is off at times . And you may be having ridiculous thoughts .

My initial point was people complain about negative posters and then neg rep them when they post

Just as easy to put people on Foe if they are sick of them being negative

I honestly worry when i see people getting all positive about the oncoming season ...if they are doing it for the sake of it it can do more harm to others whom aren't so footy savvy ......and then the big letdown if /when the ass falls out of a season can do more harm than good

I pray for the winning seasons and hope I'm extremely wrong ...but the bookies rarely get it wrong and we are at 66-1 .....

Simply neg repping doesn't help someone see where they are coming from ....and 2ndly it is becoming apparently clear that certain groups just slam dunk posters with neg repping ...if you had to attach a name some probably stop .....

We haven’t finished in the top half of the comp in 10 years, are coming off our worst defensive record ever and have signed no good players for next year. How anyone could be positive is mind blowing

I know for me as an example has to find things to be positive about, it has too much of a negative effect on mental health otherwise. I will build my hope over the off season.

I think Hodgson would actually make a difference and I’m hoping Sheens can help our attack and Cayless our defence. That’s what I’m hanging on to at this point.

I like your positive outlook avo, despite the obvious fact that we suck

Maybe we might put our cookies into a guy called Smith .... Mr Brendan Smith .... come on down (side note I think we have about 1% chance of this happening so don't hold your breath)
