Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I'd take Hayne on his day he can win you a match single handedly, if he could be persuaded to be on the bus not conducting it he could be a good fit. We need match winners.

We'd be silly not to at least have a discussion with him. He's a million bucks better than any other fullback we have at the club.

We would need to offer him more than 1 million to leave the GC. He's not worth it.

He's probably not but we're unfortunately in a position where we are going to have to pay overs to attract talent.

it will be extremely hard to sign top players know as we are on our knees. management will tell you they are after such players to keep sponsors and supporters happy. widdop will stay a dragon, cronk wont come here, johnson to stay a warrior, foran to dogs and know you can see we have nothing in the bank. we should maybe use the 5 million to pay down debt

Wests Tigers should go after these (realistic) players for next season:-

*Josh Dugan - Fullback from the Dragons, and off contract end of this season.Alleged to be unhappy with Dragons offer.Dragons want to pay him less,to play as a centre. He wants more as a fullback.Wests Tigers can beat offer with Teddy going, promise him fullback and VC role. Also talk is Dragons will only be able to afford to re-sign Widdop or Dugan, and NOT both because of the big pay signing of Ben Hunt.Widdop their first choice (Now rumoured to be re-signing with Dragons),and Dragons have two young guns that can replace Dugan in Jai Field or Matt Dufty at fullback.

*Talk Wests Tigers management has ruled signing Josh Dugan out, which is crazy. He's a great player, and we need a replacement for Teddy.

Daniel Tupou - Winger from the Roosters, and off contract end of this season.Great height for a winger, good finisher, and can help mentor Suli.Should be able to get for the right price, especially if Teddy is going to the Roosters.

Tyrone Roberts - Utility from the Titans, and off contract end of this season.New goal kicker and can play 5/8 along side Brooks.Running game would compliment Brooks, and shouldn't cost too much either.

Ben Matulino - Prop off contract from Warriors.Rumoured to have already signed with Wests Tigers for next year.

Sam Kasiano - Prop from Bulldogs.Still under contract their next season, but they are wanting to off load to get Woods and Foran. Will pay part of his 2018 salary.Wests Tigers need size.Only at right price. If NOT most likely re-sign Tim Grant on the cheap.

A starting team like this:-

1.Josh Dugan (VC & back up GK)
2.Daniel Tupou
3.Moses Suli
4.Michael Chee Kam
5.David Nofoaluma
6.Tyrone Roberts (GK)
7.Luke Brooks
8.Ben Matulino
9.Matt McIlwrick
10.Ava Seumanufagai
11.Sauaso Sue
12.Chris McQueen
13.Elijah Taylor (C)

Bench:

14.Josh Aloiai ( 2nd rower and prop)
15.Sam Kasiano (prop)
16.Chris Lawrence (lock,2nd rower, & centre if injuries during game)
17.JJ Felise (Prop)

St George Illawarra Dragons set to retain Gareth Widdop as Wests Tigers turn to Josh Reynolds

Michael Chammas - SMH

Gareth Widdop looks set to remain at St George Illawarra after the Dragons significantly bumped up their original offer and extended the duration of their skipper's deal by another year.

It comes as the Wests Tigers ruled out off-contract Dragons fullback Josh Dugan as a replacement for the departing James Tedesco, leaving Dugan's future in limbo given the internal squabble at St George Illawarra over his best position.

Widdop had informed Dragons officials his asking price was far greater than the original offer that was on the table, and also requested his contract be increased from a three-year deal to a four-year deal.

Given the irresistible form of the 28-year-old this season and the threat of the circling Wests Tigers and Melbourne Storm, the Dragons came to the party and satisfied Widdop's requests this week to table a lucrative contract until the end of 2021.

The Tigers had identified Widdop as their No.1 target to replace the Parramatta-bound Mitchell Moses next year, however the club is now resigned to missing out on his signature given the Dragons' increased offer.

While Jarryd Hayne is also open to negotiations from rival clubs, Fairfax Media understands the Tigers are reluctant to move on both he and Dugan amid fears of cultural ramifications at the club.

The Tigers have all but given up hope of their ambitious desire to lure Shaun Johnson from across the ditch, now turning their attention to Canterbury No.6 Josh Reynolds as a potential halves partner for the lone survivor of the "big four", Luke Brooks.

Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson has also been identified by the Tigers, who now have close to $4 million to spend on players for next season given the forthcoming departures of Moses, Tedesco and Aaron Woods.

Warriors prop Ben Matulino, who returns from injury this weekend, is expected to be one of them. Dragons prop Russell Packer also looks like reuniting with Cleary and Matulino given St George Illawarra's extra investment into Widdop.

Johnson also played with Matulino and Packer under Cleary at the Warriors, however he admits he is close to re-signing with New Zealand.

"I have obviously been in talks with the club for a while now and we're getting close," Johnson said.

"It is hopefully going to be sorted soon. I think walking away – a lot of people have said it is probably what I should do to take my game to a new level at a different club – but it doesn't make sense to myself. I wouldn't be satisfied with that I don't think. Hopefully we can agree on some good terms to stay here and I can achieve what not only myself, but this club and organisation wants to achieve.

"It is a challenge, but as footy players that's what you live for. You don't want to walk into a system where it is all set up for you and you can just be another name on the wall at a club that has already won a comp and achieved all there is to achieve in this game. It's always a challenge.

"We have our challenges here like every other team does. The thrill of knowing what this team can do to rugby league in New Zealand – I really want to be a part of. That's what I have said all along. I have said that to Jim [Doyle], I have said that to Mooks, I have said that to the coaching staff here. I am sure we will have it settled soon."

Listen to Shaun Johnson talk about his club.

Also compare that article to Kents article. That article is still full of opinion but it's not making stuff up and it's calm and factual.

Josh Reynolds would be ok except he's apparently asking for way too much and NOT a goal kicker.

Forget Connor Watson - For now. He's contracted at the Roosters for 2018.They will keep him, just so no one else will have him.

These next few years are going to be a rough old ride.

Yeah probably, but it doesn't hurt to ask them.

I feel a somewhat optimistic side we could field next year could consist of:
1\. Clinton Gutherson (Player swap for Moses then offer him some decent coin)
2\. David Nofoaluma
3\. Jamal Idris/Taane Milne
4\. Moses Suli
5\. Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck
6\. Josh Reynolds
7\. Luke Brooks
8\. Ava Seumanufagai
9\. Matt McIlwrick
10\. James Grahame (Offer him one last payout)
11\. Josh Aloiai
12\. Chris McQueen
13\. Elijah Taylor

14\. Ben Matulino
15\. Sauaso Sue
16\. Michael Chee-Kam/Chris Lawrence
17\. Jacob Liddle

Not a horrible side in my opinion. Isn't gonna set the world on fire, but neither has this years.

Im actually a fan of the Brooks/Reynolds combo. An organising half with a running 5/8th. Benefit is that Reynolds can defend. It would be good to only have a defensive deficiency on one side of the field.
