I wouldn't at all be surprised if we don't sign anyone until next year. Why not leave 2 spots for any players that want a mid season release? Parra are leaving a spot open for Semi next year

I think that the NRL make you fill the 30 spots.

If you sign someone with contract value than someone in the existing Top 30, they bump that person out of the Top 30 don't they?

I'm not sure, all I heard was that you must fill all 30 cap spaces.
Otherwise you could just sign 20 players and give them really big contracts that other clubs couldn't match.
Please don't quote me as this is just what I have read online, not completely sure of all the in's and out's of the salary cap rules that apply to 14 of the 16 NRL clubs.

Exactly.

We have almost a new team here. We don't know who is going to play poorly and who will do well.

Lets wait till some guns get chucked on the market with loading. Why sign the dribbles from the dogs? We should not be their salary cap solution.

Who knows what position we will need people next year. Maybe it's Lock, Maybe it's wing, maybe it's something else. Lets see this team play together.

We got a solid team but now we need an "x-factor" , "a point of difference".
Maybe its Lolo , or maybe Moylan.

Maybe Curtis Rona?

I think his height, speed, finishing ability would be a nice addition to our squad.

Gone quite on that front though

His name has come up as going to the eels recently. Would be a great addition to our team.

Him and another hard nosed budget forward

That hard nosed budget forward should be Tyson Cleal from the Redcliffe Dolphins.
Have a look at his defensive hits on youtube.

Pretty sure that is right mate. It's just the top 30 paid players. There is a secondary cap for players outside of that.

I think our only trouble comes if we don't spend the necessary % of the cap because of the cheaper players or those extra two players from the secondary cap don't meet the top 30 minimum wage requirements.

You are right.. The Top 25 as it used to be is the Top 25 paid players in the Club but it is fluid which is why they used the Second Tier Cap for players outside the Top 25 paid players…Most Clubs use more than 25 players in a season..Once the 2nd tier Cap was exhausted that's when Clubs needed to apply for exemptions to play a player not in the Top 25 paid players and outside the 2nd Tier Cap..this will change now squads are extended to 30 ...I don't believe there will be a 2nd Tier Cap anymore so not sure how it will work for a Club hard hit by injury and need to use more than 30 players..

There is also a Salary Cap floor which i think is about 96% of the Cap must be spent on Players in the current Cap Year..so Clubs can have some wriggle room for mid-season transfers...Usually though you will find they will move another player on to fill that spot..happened to us this year when Moses and Rankin were released and Lolohea and Twal filled those spots..You certainly cant move Cap money from one year to the next if it is not spent so the 2 spots we have left will be filled in 2018..

I read that Parra were able to sign Moses mid-season with funds they had not yet allocated after releasing Foran from his 2017 contract...

**Manly set for shock signing for 2018**
Popular Dragons forward Joel Thompson is set for a shock switch to Manly in 2018.
Thompson is contracted to the Dragons for next season but the two clubs are close to coming to a deal that will see him change colours.
>
The news will come as a major surprise to Dragons fans, with Thompson one of their most consistent forwards this season.
>
But the Sea Eagles have lost experienced forwards Brenton Lawrence (Titans), and Nate Myles (Storm) and feel the hard-running Thompson will boost their pack strength.
>
The 29-year-old Thompson is a 10-year NRL veteran, having started his career with the Raiders in 2008\. He switched to the Dragons in 2014 and has been a fan favourite in recent seasons.
>
Dragons officials are certain to feel a backlash from fans if the deal goes through in coming days.

I wonder if we have been talking to him. A very underrated forward imo.

This article from the Telecrap,
NICK Politis will have to dig a little deeper into his pockets with Latrell Mitchell and his management expected to seek a pay increase at the end of the season.

Mitchell has emerged as the Sydney Roosters’ X factor, scoring the winning try against Brisbane in week one of the finals, and the youngster who will cause a huge threat out wide against North Queensland in Saturday night’s preliminary final at Allianz Stadium.

There has even been talk of Mitchell being a bolter in Mal Meninga’s Kangaroos’ World Cup team, which would only make it more difficult for the Roosters to deny Mitchell his upgrade request.

While fellow centres Jack Bird and Josh Dugan will collect north of $800,000 next season, The Daily Telegraph understands Mitchell will earn around $400,000 next season and $450,000 in 2019 when his Bondi deal expires.
\
\
But not even Roosters long-serving chairman Politis could have envisaged Mitchell going on to prove the success he has become in such a short time.

Mitchell, 20, is happy at the Roosters, but those around him know he could just as easily walk into a bigger deal elsewhere.

The fullback factor can also not be ignored, with Mitchell keen to eventually switch to the back, something which will not happen at the Roosters with superstar No. 1 James Tedesco bound for Bondi the next four years.

Mitchell’s manager Steve Deacon plans to sit down with the Roosters at the end of the year and discuss an upgrade, something that has already been brought to their attention.

“It’s been in our plans to have those talks, but it would be premature to do anything until the season is over or potentially after the World Cup if he makes that Australian side,’’ Deacon said.

“He hadn’t played a single NRL game when he signed his original deal and his form warrants an upgrade, and it’s something we’ll address.

“It’s something I’d say the Roosters will be willing to discuss based on his performances to keep him at the club. Everybody thinks they are worth more, be it selling a car or a house, but Latrell’s ability speaks for itself of late.’’

Tigers should make a big play for Mitchell even if it makes Nick dig a bit deeper into his wallet or has to buy some more Brown paper bags.

Surely we can sign Ballin again and he can re-retire when someone comes up

I'd be very happy with Latrell Mitchell. I hope we chase him hard next season.

It would be great if we would actually recruit an indigenous player. Indigenous round with the jerseys every year and we dont have any murrys/kooris represented..

Apparently this is the cap management that the Roosters use, their stars get top dollar while their up and coming players get a small salary.
Their cap manager stated that if you pay your average players big money they think that they are stars, and don't have to improve.
If you pay them basic salary they work their butts off to get a big contract.
That's why players like Watson was on a small salary, and they would have a lot more players on the same as Watson.
Don't forget the brown paper bags!

"Their cap manager stated that if you pay your average players big money they think that they are stars, and don't have to improve."

Bingo. We spoilt Tedesco, Moses and Brooks because we wanted to keep our spine… Hence we got a crap spine.

they werent that crap.. woods, moses and tedesco have probably been our best player for the last 2-3 years.

I agree that they have been our best players for the last 3 years.
I am saying that in wanting to preserve the spine of "Teddy, Moses and Brooks" we stuffed ourselves. We spoilt them. (or at least we spoilt Moses and Brooks, both on 500k I understand).

Had we got them on 120K contracts and waited till the proved themselves. They may have stayed and earned their spot.

Tedesco had already proved himself -and Wood proved himself years ago. I still think the damage in this club was caused two to three years ago.
When Taylor finally went , it was too little too late.

He'd be great, actually, I can remember him making only a handful of mistakes on the field in the entire last couple of seasons,
Casper would be a master stroke for 2018\. Lol

Haha. I should have read here first.

I just posted the same thing in Moylan thread and started my post exactly like yours.

Two spots left, would be unreal to grab L.Mitchell&J.Thompson what a side we would have, come on Harry do a nick & break out those brown paper bags

Frankly amazed that Saints would consider letting Thompson go.They better hope Graham & Hunt play like champs for them next year, or they will be sliding down the ladder.

Had a look at that Tyson Cleal footage , kid hits hard , looks fit , would be a good back up player that could very well make the top grade in 12 months

Opportunity cost I guess. Why waste a spot on idris if you can potentially get someone better? Who exactly, I don't know, but players will become available right up until jun 30 next year.

You still need 30 players for round 1.
