Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Phil Rothfield revealed the Sharks are over their cap for 2020 despite letting a number of young players go recently, including Jayden Brailey to the Knights and Kyle Flanagan to the Roosters.

“The Sharks are already over the cap for next year and they haven’t had an off-season,” Rothfield told Controversy Corner.

“Paul Gallen is not on a lot of money this year so his retirement won’t help. He had his big money contracts earlier in his career.

“So they don’t have a problem this year, but they have lost Jayden Brailey, Kyle Flanagan and Gallen is retiring and they are still over their cap for next year.”

Rothfield revealed the Sharks are paying half their cap for next season to just six players.

“Shaun Johnson, Andrew Fifita, Aaron Woods, Wade Graham, Josh Dugan and Matt Moylan, if you add their penalty of 350k they take up more than half the cap,” Rothfield said.

“Then you have another 24 players to feed.”

I thought Taylor came in then didn’t rate him and decided not to go ahead with the contract

That is what happened, and contrary to what some will tell you, we coughed up money for him to play at Parra because he had arranged to come to Sydney

That's incredibly shitty from the club. I hope something like that never happens again. You can't ask a guy to move his entire life then send him packing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we have Kyle Lovett playing in the centres at times that year? Why in the world would we not have gone ahead with Takairangi's contract? Ah, dragging up the past. This is what happens when you finish 9th every year.

At least their players are playing 1st grade. Our duds are having a paid vacation on us.

@Kazoo-Kid

I hate to defend Taylor but it was that period we are not going to sign anyone for x amount of years to help out cap period. So part of not signing takarangi was we didn’t have the money

Our “ duds “ can still make the semifinals.

Can they? Yes.

Will they? I hope so. Do you?

Let’s wait and see.

As I've said numerous times we should look to pillage the best young players from the sharks. They can't afford to keep them and we can offer a clear path to first grade under a professional coach

Buzz been a bit quite this year to his standards

You misunderstand what I meant .... I’m talking about our highly paid “duds” sitting on the sideline.

They’ve already signed them knowing some team would be dumb enough to take Woods, Dugan or Moylan on big money. Sounds familiar when we did a favour to the Dogs for Reynolds and Mbye on big coin.

Tigers and Sharks on such a similar trajectory this year, even with the cap issues, dead weight and fines.

Except that Sharks have real talent but can't find consistency, whereas Tigers have no talent and are consistently average.

They can't register any contracts seeing they're over the cap. Talented youngsters could wait around off contract for a few more months until some club maybe takes a high priced star at half price or they could move on with their careers.

They have a lot of talent in NRL, CC, Flegg, Ball and Matts. We should target each level for a few recruits. Of course there's competition from other clubs who'd want to do likewise but we also don't have as much talent coming through as clubs like Penrith, Canberra, Parra, Dragons etc.

If we could get Sailor from the Dragons that would eb great too, though i don't think his dad would ever let him come here seeing as we're a basketcase kind of club that doesn't make finals.

Yeah, unless there is a clause allowing for future actions to clear cap space, it would seem impossible for the sharks to enforce their contracts.

Brad Takerangi off contract. Does a job in a number of positions. Not sure what his price tag would be

Brad would walk into our centres or second row.

In other words he'd get into our centres or second row at maximum pace.

If they are over next year how come they are not over this year. Those players are still on their books this year as is Gallen who won't be counted in next years cap. It can't be backended contracts because the NRL stopped those. Am I missing something or has the NRL just turned a blind eye.

@diedpretty

Read somewhere that the Sharks upgraded a number of players contracts for next year plus re-signed several players as well.

Upgraded Nikora, Xerri, Blayke Brailey and I think Uele, Gallen is on not much apparently, and some of the others have price rises built in to their contracts
