Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

When watching Walters play his first game the commentators were saying he would be a great hooker.. He has the size, quickness and smarts for play there with his halves background so might be 9 next year..

He's 25, has barely played and yet has hype around him. Is there something I'm missing other than the fact he's Kevin Walters son?

Nope...

What you've missed is that Billy Walters for the last couple of years has been part of the most successful franchise in the NRL for the last couple of decades. It's called the Melbourne Storm.

Can play multiple positions, doesn't cost much.

Great buy if only for depth.

players that leave that franchise rarely become better players.

Except when he's not playing for the Storm he plays for Easts Tigers in the QLD cup currently running 8th and no chance of finals..He doesn't make it to their seconds team the Falcons..

Know an avid follower of Easts who said Walters is OK..probably the best 6 in QLD Cup can read and settle play but best when given freedom but is a poor defender who wouldn't handle the rigours of a 9 in the NRL..

Back up half at best..

If we've signed Walters, Reynolds is gone

I know which one I’d rather, but that’s us ay.

If you'd rather have Reynolds on 700-800k a year than almost any other warm body in professional sport you have a lot to learn about salary caps.

@TigersBusDriver Ask Bellamy. He must have seen something when he signed Walters. I remember too that he saw something in Paperhuzen. Something which most Wests Tigers did't see.

Walters will be a reasonable backup and nothing more. Most state cup halves are eg. Littlejohn, Drinkwater, Gamble, Sean Meaney, Jacob Miller.

To expect him to be a revelation or some hidden gem is unrealistic.

@Newtown perhaps it was his age and speed? The age is something Walters doesn't have on his side to be a breakout player. But he'll be a capable backup, for sure.

Two words. Ray Cashmere.

Sheens would never use Gower, he went on to play a stack of NRL games

Having 5 halves in our top 30 seems like overkill.

Benji
Brooks
Reynolds
Walters
Madden

And then potentially someone like Mbye or Matto in emergency.

One would need to go.

I said this in the Benji thread, we can’t carry Benji and Grub, there are too many holes in our roster to fill

Good chance we won't be carrying grub.

Not many players leave the storm system and kick on, most actually go backwards. I’m actually nervous about the signing given we have hardly any squad spots left and is this really the best we could sign.... hardly feels me with confidence

I don't think you can make an automatic connection. Reynolds has a contract so unless someone else is interested he's not going anywhere. I thought he looked sharp in small doses last week.

He looked ok taking darts out of dummy half but those passes he was throwing looked pretty ordinary. 5/8 or bust for mine.
