Simpkin

Watching the replay, saw some stuff I didn't see first time around.

In the lead up to our second try, Simpkin runs straight at the A defender which draws their entire defensive line one man in. This creates the overlap for Brooks to throw the long ball to Nofoaluma, who scores in the corner. In the same play, the fullback is stuck at marker, so Simpkin delays his pass a moment so he can't race across to put a try saver on.

Top notch dummy half play there. Very reminiscent of Robbie Farah. Has clearly rubbed off on him.

Shouldn’t have been on the bench. He should start or next t be in the team at all.
Simpkin wasn’t coming back from ressies to go 80 against Parras pack.
Brooks was always going to 9…
That’s why madden was there.

I get the reasoning - just though he could have been better… held his own against shitty teams, didn’t step up against sharks or Parra…
Dunno he’s the saviour he’s been claimed to be - time will tell…

Hoping they’re just off from the shake up and it works better this week - a win against the rabbits would really set us up to hit our straps playing some of the lower spots Des with some stock coming back in

Good ruck recognition as the markers aren’t quite ready and it’s rare we get quick PTB’s in this position. We looked far more dynamic attacking their line.

Promising hooker Jake Simpkin is committed to the Tigers long term, even if it means losing the No.9 jersey to Apisai Koroisau next year, reports Angus Thomson.

The 20-year-old played the first two games of the season at No.9 before he was dropped to the bench for the loss to the Warriors, and hasn’t played since.

Coach Michael Maguire has made a raft of changes in reaction to his side’s fifth straight loss, recalling Simpkin to replace Jacob Liddle.

Simpkin said he had been working on parts of his game to improve in his time away from first grade and is determined to make the position his own.

“I had a pretty disrupted preseason with my shoulder injury, so I just want to get back to playing football and get my match fitness back up,” he said.

“My goal is to have a solid game and keep my spot.”

Two-time premiership-winning hooker Koroisau will join the club from 2023 after playing out his contract with Penrith.

Simpkin said he had spoken to the club before it announced the coup and is looking forward to learning from the former Rabbitohs, Manly and Penrith star.

“Api’s a lot older. He’s got a lot more experience and I’m still pretty young, so I think he’ll be very good for my development,” he said.

“I can’t wait to have him here and to learn under him.”

Simpkin has not given any consideration to seeking more playing time elsewhere.

“Of course not - I’m committed to the Tigers long term,” he said.

“This is where I want to be, and I want to help turn the club around.”

From an unknown interview, I copied it from Facebook.

Agree with Liddle, but he is the best we have for now.
Hastings will help him alot as he done for Simpkin "my opinion" yesterday. Brooksy played well but his game needs to be evolve with Hastings and throwing him into hooker for the last 10-15 minutes when the game is in the balance and hope yesterday performance wasnt a flash in the pan!!
For me Peachey / Rua provide more than Brooks at hooker and Madden on the bench.
Thus telling Peach with a clear direction that it is a team sport and he dosent try to make every post a winner
If the forwards played like that for Liddle we may get more out of him…
I think it’s been a little glossed over how good our forwards were yesterday - and that’s certainly as good as Jake has ever played - in any grade.
If Jake is out, I don’t mind Brooks at 9 for a while….

Can’t help but think that’s where we’re heading this year anyhow.

Re Liddle.
Reality is, he stays as a back up for us, goes to another team with less hooking depth. Titans, Raiders, Manly (pending Fainu) or to the ESL as someone suggested. Either way he is here next year unless we tell him we aren’t extending him as a priority over other hookers, he’ll have a look around I’m sure.

Barring injury I think we watched our halves pairing for 2022 yesterday. It clicked well.

I agree - but Simpkin is likely injured, and Doueihi is coming back somewhere…
Depending on where you get your info - brooks is off after this year?
If that’s the case, why would anyone shift Doueihi out?
Truth is - no one knows… we’re only one injury away from everything changing.

It was some time back - but I remember we used to have a 6, 7 & 9 rotation in the sheenius days - Robbie played a lot of first receiver / quazy half type stuff….

Can’t help but wonder if Sheensy is up to his old tricks - saw in the first few weeks, there was a rotation…. Wasn’t a matter of blokes not making it to their spot - it seemed structured.

Injuries will play their part but I think AD fills a big hole at centre. JTJ’s body isn’t up to NRL anymore

Anyone got any inside knowledge on the injury?
Exhibit A, B & C of lateral ankle sprains often looking worse than they are. Ryan Papenhuyzen, Jake Simpkin & Regan Campbell-Gillard all went through:
- rolling their ankles to considerable angles
- significant initial pain
- swelling ++ in following days
- named to play in Rd 7

The kid was good yesterday. That said, only early into the game yesterday, along with Brooks nailing it in defence and the boot, plus turning forwards back inside more often, the other seemingly tactical change was others getting into dummy half to ease pressure on the nine and passing rather than just there for a run, with Joffa the one I noticed most.

Haven't checked other than watching live, but certainly looked like a change had been made to me as it played out at the time.
