Taking a wrecking ball to the club! (Recent Media Reports)

What if we called it the "Balmain Magpies"? Does that satisfy the half you feel you are at risk of losing, but also then old Balmain supporters get the "Balmain" back?

For example in my position as an old Tiger, I love love the club's last Tiger logo and I'll never move on from that emotional attachment because it was formed in my childhood. I will never have quite that basic emotional attachment to the Wests Tiger logo because that was created when I was an adult, and even then it's already been modified twice since 2000.

But what can I do about my old club logos? The logo is demoted and Balmain is demoted and that's how it is, demoted to less than reserve grade, only to juniors and the Balmain junior district is already a Rorschach blot of Inner West and West Sydney. That's what I have accepted as the best outcome of the merge.

So why in fairness should half the merger keep their Wests Magpie in reserve grade? I understand your argument is because keeping the Tiger is potentially more meaningful to supporters than keeping the "Wests". That may be a fair comment. I would probably say the club colours too, though Tigers rarely play in predominantly orange and black/orange/white is highly complimentary in any combination.

But also on the other hand my old club is basically gone, with Balmain being first merged and then subsumed by Wests, such that it is given a vote in respect to the past, but with no other power, no assets. In which case there's then the argument that old Balmain fans have lost basically everything about their old club, only the Tiger truly remains in terms of the history, and some old Magpie fans want both Wests, and the magpie on the shoulder, and complete Boardroom control and complete Leagues Club control... as well as Wests Magpies retained in the reserve grade comp so they can still cling to the Magpie name, the black and white (only) jersey and the old Victa sponsorship.

Well honestly I don't see that as a fair 50/50 split and that's why I feel it should be Wests Tigers all the way down, and Balmain and Magpies can both be resigned to shirt sleeves and history. But I also respect that it's not an argument worth having, and it's not Wests' fault that Balmain ran out of money (it's the Labor State Govt's fault), and if some people really need to have the Maggies running around in the NSWRL then they can have it.
"...and black/orange/white is highly complimentary in any combination".... as well as being the best of all the Licorice Allsort varieties.

Couple of things

Is BZN Yappy? Anyone remember Yappy from the original forum?

Does anyone know, how much does HBG or any Leagues Club chuck into the running of a football team, these days?

Used to be about a million a year, as of 2022 (I was told directly by the CFO). That's a million from the Wests Leagues Club; I don't know how HBG operates exactly WRT funding obtained from all their facilities and who actually writes out the cheque.

It may be less now that the NRL covers more than the salary cap and we have a good sponsorship deal, but I'd guess it's still roughly a million.

Here here, you're 100% spot on wt..."in fact, I'd say most Balmain fans were pretty happy about being able to hold onto the Tigers name"[and colours] "it's the Magpies that were shafted in that regard". In other words, the Magpies lost 'their' name 'and' colours.

Just as I said in a post yesterday "THE MAGPIES LOST THEIR SOUL", and now it seems to me there is a push on to take away anything and everything that the Magpies have left.

And again, as I said yesterday the Magpies were left with owning 90% of WT's but in reality, that means zilch as you can't own 90% of a lost soul = 90% of nothing.

Wests Magpies didn't just gift Balmain 10% of the WT's, they gifted Balmain the whole friggin club.

And that's what I was conveying to cochise back in 2019 and he has put 💩 on me ever since.
My words to him then as I have already stated... "Balmain were vanquished due to owning only 10% of the club, while Wests Magpies were the victor in owning 90%, but it seemed to me like Balmain was the victor at the time as the Magpies had lost their soul".

A short while after my post in 2019 I did admit to using a bad choice of words which to a very staunch Balmain follower and Wests Magpies hater, may have sounded inflammatory, but the meaning of my words and the outcome that exists still today, is exactly the same.
I can appreciate you feel like you lost something vital when the merger occurred, and you seem to be hanging it almost entirely on the Tiger branding. As I said to Magpies Forever, I wonder if you would have felt better if we were the Balmain Magpies or some such.

There was no doubt back in 1999 that the Tiger logo was considered valuable, not even from a bias perspective but simply from marketing. That's what Parramatta wanted from a merger with Balmain, they wanted more access to the junior base and the Tiger logo, as in Parramatta Tigers. Dominated almost entirely by Parramatta but retaining the Tiger logo.

And that's where we stand now! Wests Tigers, dominated politically and financially by Wests, but retaining the Tiger name for marketing and historical purposes. Perhaps even out of respect to the now deceased Balmain club.

What I think you fail to understand is what the Balmain side of the merger lost, where you talk about "soul", but the Magpies still exist and still call the shots, whereas Balmain is falling further and further back into history like Newtown (who at least still have their reserve grade side), the Bears etc.

I made the point that personally I loved the old Balmain logo from the 80s and that will never come back, so despite us being Tigers, I will never relate with the Wests Tiger logo in the same fundamental tribal way I identified with the Balmain logo. There is also the childhood association, via my Dad and his dad, and of the old family home in Leichhardt, sold a few decades ago, where we used to walk down as a family to the home matches. That is tied to old Balmain more than Wests, and we only play 3-4 times at Leichhardt anyway.

Obviously that Balmain stuff is mostly gone now, but I would still consider that the "soul" that Balmain gave up, just as much as you might refer to what the Magpies gave up. I would submit that you perhaps fail to appreciate what Balmain fans also gave up in 1999, and perhaps even more now considering that, despite the club logo, Wests run the show and Balmain are kept on board as a mark of respect, but with next to no power or money. Balmain literally doesn't exist above juniors and the Balmain Leagues Club similarly is just a hole in the ground, remaining assets bought out by Wests.

So the only option is to find a new soul - that's what I did in 2000. It's not the same as my old Balmain soul but it's a new thing, and I always had respect for Western Suburbs the club, so I made my peace with the decisions made by the two clubs, and moved forward. I've now been a Wests Tigers man for longer than I was Balmain.
