From Pete Badel:

"Pangai Jr was on the verge of formally committing to the Tigers last month, only for the deal to collapse at the eleventh hour when Wests bosses got cold feet during negotiations and briefly walked away from talks."

Has there ever been a club worse at negotiations lol

we are stupid we either wanted him a month ago or we didn't dumb way to negotiate

Exactly , walk away and say that’s our final price. Don’t come back after you talk to the media and say we aren’t taking it further and make yourself look stupid when you miss out on him.

we just look like fools don't jump back in to negotiations after saying you were pulling out.
Another one lost that is fact
On the plus side ewe have lost worse in JAC and Latrell
May aswell keep aiming at juniors and not overpaying

Embarrassing.

Bet we went cold because we listened to the media saying "Pangai?! Oh he's not what they need, they should get Finucane" - and we listened, and now the media is all like "They've missed another one!".

This is not a Latrell or JAC type miss so I'm not that fussed. Would have been good to have him, but we were paying overs for potential and there's off field issues there as well.

If there's any truth to Egan Butcher that would be a decent signing at much lower cap risk. Fairly good defender and can break a tackle. Only real deficiency I have seen in his game is lack of an offload.

Agreed, he is not a 'marquee' player, has attitude/discipline issues on and off the field so is no great loss. Overpaying just to get 'someone' doesn't make sense, BTDT.

Disappointed but not devastated.
Between Stefani,Musgrave Mikaele,Blore and Simkin,we have some very large units coming thru...
Id rather by some outside backs(centres) and a back up half capable of playing NRL with Walters & Mbyes(part) and maybe Brooksmoney for next year
..plus a decent assistant coach or two!

Do you believe that's actually true? POM has already said the deal was agreed in principle and then when the offer was made, they wanted more money.

Brent Read also reported that the TPJ's management called us after we pulled out, not the other way around.

I agree with you.

All the same, over time, it reflects poorly on the club's ability to get these things done. I'd love Pascoe to take some accountability rather than say, "we're doing all the right things, I don't understand".

We are gun shy, unable to be pull the trigger - we doubted ourselves when Cooper Cronk, Blocker Roach and a host of other commentators claimed we are crazy signing TPJ and should be targeting the old Bingo (legs eleven) Caller in Finucane!
With a history of poor signings we are paranoid and often criticised by the press when linked to anyone.

I’m sure Bulldogs moved quickly with TPJ once we halted original negotiations then Phil Gould (scene stealer) delayed the announcement until he announced himself at the Dogs so he gained all the accolades!

My guess is TPJ has chosen the Bulldogs because they are prepared to pay more

That is the correct answer and when their policy fails again next year they will be in an even deeper hole at the end of 2022 with more years of pain ahead of them.

Or if it pays off, they will be laughing their back into the top 8. Every club has a strategy and its clear what's dogs is. Ours seems like a abit harder to read, other than refusing to pay overs anymore. One day we are going to have to bite the bullet and fork out some doe or else our only hope is Junior talent which has its risks also.

I don't think we have to change strategy. I also think our recruitment strategy has been pretty good. I also don't think missing out on marquee players at TPJ's level is going to hurt us.

I think the signing that hurt us the most missing out on was Latrell. He is a weapon. That is what we need. We need a top marquee player or we have to play money ball.

The issue with moneyball is it's never actually won anything. The A's have been doing it for 20 years and they've not won the world series, even though they've outperformed relative to their roster spend. It's a good way to bridge some of the gap in a comp without a salary cap, but a sabermetric approach in a defined salary cap comp like the NRL has its limitations imo.

A miss is still a miss yet another recruit we went for and got passed over for whether that be for Money culture or whatever.
Now the list is
JAC
Latrell
TPJ

Do not over pay for a broken Dale finucane
Stick to youth
may aswell front load some guys then if we pay some of Mmbye's salary now it may make him more appealing for next year to a club.

we need that big kill like a Cameron Munster 9r something that can turn a game

I think it's our only option. You may have to pay marquee dollars every so often to retain or attract talent but the opposite approach will always fail. You get players like Reynolds, Packer and Mbye and they kill your club.

If you waste your marquee dollars as we have you basically lower your chances of success significantly until you can unwind those contracts.

I like the Dogs signings for instance. They could come good. The problem is if some of those top dollar signings don't perform they will be in big trouble.
