Actually, I dont think it is as bad as everyone thinks it will be. Yes, it confirms that cheating goes on, but you tell me a professional sport where cheating (or bending the rules) does not take place - e.g. a lot of people will not be surprised that Melbourne were/are cheating, but they will be surprised by the severity of the punishment and this is a good thing. The NRL have sent a very clear message that they will not tolerate cheating and are not afraid to go back however far it was and strip whatever accolades the club received (but did not earn).
As for the TV deal, the NRL markteing guru's are much smarter that me - so I wont tell them how to do their job - but if it were me I would use this incident to gain leverage. For example, I would say it demonstrates that the NRL is tough on cheats - if this had happened in the AFL (and I dont know if they ever have a salary cap) to say Geelong would they have acted as decisively as the NRL have? I would also say that this action will make clubs realise that the cost of being caught far outweighs the benefits of cheating, so it (i.e. large systemic breaches, small breaches will always be there, if for no other reason than human error) will be weeded out of the game over time. This inturn will improve the product going forward - as the salary cap will continue to level out the playing field and dominant dynasties such as Melbourne will be a thing of he past, etc. etc.
If it had been a match fixing scandal that would have been far worse as it damages the integrity of the entire league. This incident damages the club and News Ltd (although they are teflon coated) but actually improves the integrity of the league - as it demonstrates that the system for catching cheats works and the punishment will be severe if caught - as it was with the dogs.
