Bet against your team…deregistered.
Beat the s*** out of your wife.....change teams.

Makes sense.

While in general terms bashing your missus is deplorable, far worse than throwing a footy match to win yourself a few bucks, unfortunately a player beating their missus up does not cheapen the contest between two teams and has no real impact on how a game is played out. The product itself is directly threatened by players betting on games.

But you're suggesting Simona fixed, which the NRL accepts he didnt.

The betting was stupid but harmless. A 1 to 2 year ban for that should be sufficient. 12 weeks for the drugs, based on the Barba example and another 1 year for the charity stuff.

2-3 years max in total IMO.

Jaya: Why you choosing that guy (Quinlan) to score first?

Simona: I’m marking him lol. If I let him.

Jaya: What does that mean? Oh he will be opposite you?

Simona: Yes.

JayaOhhhhh.

Simona: You think.

Jaya: Hmmm dangerous.

Simona: Yep.

Jaya: This is legit match-fixing now.

And yet the NRL and presumably every media outlet with a passing interest in the NRL has pored over every one of the games he bet on and has not been able to identify a single incident where he deliberately intervened to win a bet. So we're left with a few possibilities.

He's a great actor and managed to conceal his attempts at sabotage;
he got paranoid on game day and couldn't go through with it;
he was unlucky in that his deliberate attempts to bet on direct opponents was prevented by late positional switches;
he has no idea who he is supposed to be marking;
he forgot he was betting on the games by the time the game started.

None of them are particularly convincing really.

You're right.

There are really only 2 options.

He is the dumbest guy ever to walk the earth.

Players getting mixed messages on gambling

An expert in gambling studies, Monash University's Doctor Charles Livingstone says professional athletes are being sent mixed messages about sports betting, with players bombarded with gambling advertising but told not to participate.

"What we need to do is start cleaning up this business from the top down rather than from the bottom up," Dr Livingston said.

"Obviously players have to accept that they are responsible if they make stupid decisions like this, but at the end of the day what they are courting is this sort of incredible contradiction."
He says gambling advertising should be banned from sport.

You'd never see Greenberg admit to this.

Well this is the thing that really ticks me off about major sports including NRL. You have the scenario where betting is advertised everywhere and the NRL have gone to lengths to have their 'partners' in betting agencies.
Then you have other non partners who advertise nonetheless and then have players promoting betting by the very fact these agencies' names are plastered over their jerseys. Then anyone who goes out and spends their hard earned on supporters gears has the privilege to also promote these betting agencies.
Not to be outdone we now have Manly playing at Lottoland. Seriously?
So one the one hand we're happy to accept cash from betting agencies in return for advertising for them. Of course they tell everyone to 'gamble responsibly'.
On the other hand when someone is addicted and therefore is no longer responsible in their gambling it's all their fault. Don't get me wrong I believe we need to take responsibility for our actions and that's something young Tim will have to do.
But who are we kidding? With all this betting advertising going on, why are we surprised when a player gets caught up in it.
Rant over….

For the record I really feel for Tim Simona. He's NRL career is all but over and his name and his family's name will be associated with this incident. It's time for him to accept responsibility and work through the issues and hopefully he will be someone who can warn others of the dangers.

Its an addiction which, he needs to recover from. At the end of the day he is a healthy young lad who has to find a different career path. No matter what he earns until he solves it he will blow the money anyway.

I would have banned him for 5 years not life as he has showed some gumption in admitting to everything and its obviously not match fixing. We have sex offenders, wife abusers, alcoholics and steroid users playing NRL and we will hang a bloke for $400 worth of NRL Bets?

With no money now it will be easy for him to stop gambling)1000 at a time.

Yeh it's disgusting mate. But nrl or government don't say a thing because of the $$$$ gambling makes them and more than happy to throw Timmy under the bus.

There's psychologist who are now saying the gambling adds at game time affect children watching the game. Think about it kids are watching nrl and there a gambling adds during game time every spare moment. Yes I know there a responsibility on parents but this is just so wrong.

what a load of bunkum.

Disgraced Wests Tigers centre Tim Simona could face police charges over charity fraud allegations
Adrian Proszenko - SMH

Tim Simona's NRL deregistration may be just the beginning of his troubles as police continue to investigate the actions of the disgraced footballer and one of the charities involved opens up on the sad saga.

Simona is facing the prospect of fraud charges following revelations he pocketed the majority of the proceeds of jerseys auctioned off for charity. One of the parties left out of pocket was Camp Quality, formed to help children living with cancer. A spokesperson for the charity described Simona's actions as a "very sad event" that could have further repercussions for the former Wests Tigers centre.

Simona's NRL career is effectively over after he was found to have placed $600 worth of bets on rugby league matches, including on opposition teams and players. Those wagers, coupled with pocketing the proceeds of fundraising auctions of about 15 jerseys, could result in criminal charges.

"Detectives from the organised crime squad continue to work closely with the NRL integrity unit on a number of matters," a police statement read.

Camp Quality has a long-standing relationship with rugby league, having been a major sponsor of Canterbury. NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg was the chief executive of the Bulldogs when the club established the partnership and he said revelations Simona was pocketing the funds made him feel "sick in the stomach".

"Camp Quality is aware of the allegations that have been made regarding Tim Simona of Wests Tigers in relation to the reported collection of money to support our programs," Camp Quality said in a statement.

"We have investigated this matter and passed our findings on to the relevant authorities.

"Community fundraising is vital for the continued running of our innovative programs and services for children 0-13 impacted by cancer, and we are grateful for the many individuals and groups who support us.

"This very sad event serves as a reminder to the community that great fundraising starts with getting approval from the organisation that you would like to support. Fundraising for Camp Quality means working closely with us to ensure full transparency. In this way, we can work together to get the best results for our families."

Simona effectively threw away his NRL career for the sake of bets that lost him $400\. One of the wagers he placed was on former Tigers teammate Benji Marshall to score a try in a match against the Dragons in round 20 last year.

Simona lied in his interviews with the integrity unit and Greenberg said "it is very hard to imagine" that he will ever be registered in the future.

However, the Rugby League Players Association was hopeful a return was possible.

"It was inevitable that Tim would be deregistered as a result of his conduct, but we need to make it clear that this is not a life ban," said RLPA chief executive Ian Prendergast.

"We trust that Tim will be given the opportunity to rehabilitate himself and demonstrate a consistent pattern of reformed behaviour over coming years that can warrant him being re-registered to be involved in the NRL again if appropriate.

"Whether or not Tim takes that opportunity is up to him. He may not. But we believe that possibility should be provided to him if he demonstrates commitment to genuine reform and rehabilitation.

"Based on all the circumstances, we believe this approach is appropriate, particularly given there is no evidence that Tim altered his performance and when comparing his conduct to other serious misconduct and/or corruption cases in sport locally and across the globe."

Of course he could. And so could his ex-girlfriend if she either knew or assisted him with it.

The NRL just used her. I suspect no one cautioned her that it could come back to bite her.

How $600 worth of bets ended an NRL career
Disgraced former Wests Tigers centre Tim Simona has revealed how he used money he raised for charity to fund his drugs and gambling addictions.

Simona was deregistered by the NRL on Friday and handed an indefinite ban for betting on opponents in Tigers matches and also ripping off charities after auctioning off autographed jerseys.

**In an explosive interview that could shake the NRL to it's core, Simona also told News Corp Australia, how he first took cocaine with Tigers teammates on a mad Monday boat cruise three years ago**.

Simona sold 15 jerseys and took money that was meant for kids battling cancer
He said his habit spiralled out of control and was spending several thousands of dollars of his $325,000 a year salary every weekend on the drug and pokies machines.

"There was about six or seven of us,"
"We went to the toilets, and just snort a line pretty much. That was the first time I had ever touched drugs. From then on every time I would go out, I would start using it."

Simona said he never feared getting caught by drug testers despite buying up to five bags of cocaine a weekend and was tested as frequently as his Tigers teammates.

"Actually I'd been tested quite a few times, and obviously I knew when to take it," he said.

"In the rep round when we had the weekend off I would take it or if there was a long turn around between games.

"I would take it on a Friday so by Monday I think it would be out of my system."

Simona confessed to auctioning off at least 12 jerseys and keeping the money.

He was assisted by his ex-girlfriend, Jaya Taki, who text messages show was complicit in him raising funds for a foundation in memory of her dead brother.

Taki denies pocketing any of the proceeds.

"I'm so ashamed of what I've done," Simona said.

"It shows how low you'll go to get money. One jersey turned into five jerseys which turned into like eight, nine jerseys.

"There are no excuses. All I can do is give them the money when I get back on my feet."

His spiralling losses from pokies led to him asking his then girlfriend Jaya Taki to set up a betting account in her name and placed 65 bets on NRL matches - several involving the Tigers.

However, he denies any type of match fixing, insisting his teammates know that he never gave less than 100 per cent whenever he played.

"I'm just embarrassed and ashamed," he said.

"It was so dumb and so stupid. Importantly the players know I'd never be involved in match-fixing.

"They've all been texting me since it happened.

"They know what I did was wrong but they understand I always gave 100 per cent."

He knew what he was doing was wrong, he lied when being questioned.
Where is the personal responsibility? I'm tired of hearing that Tim is the victim. He is a criminal that's only remorseful because he got caught.

Mate the NRL has accepted he didnt fix. His punishment should be based on the findings at to his conduct, not some test message that may or may not be construed as a joke.

Simona didnt match up on Quinlan.

Simona was always a first class goose but he is being made a scapegoat for wide cultural problems in the NRL, not the the least of which the NRL's heavy reliance on gambling revenue.

Simona deserves what he has received if Jaya's FB post is any indication. It probably just scratches the surface. She has deleted it though so out of respect to her wishes I won't post specifics.

Simona sounds like a nasty piece of work but so are a lot of people. Young Bryce Cartwright doesn't like a good person but he won't be missing a game.

Any punishment needs to focus on what he actually did that was either illegal or contrary to the rules of the game.

The charity things sounds to be, by far, the worst of it. Whilst stupid and heinous, in the context of someone suffering from both drug and gambling addictions, it probably doesn't mean he is irredeemable. There are plenty of people running scams out there. Usually people are just a little bit smarter in how they go about it.

He must of hid all this very well from his team mates..

I did like the tele's Part 3 grab I've seen on FB…Get my boobs done or I'll tell the NRL...
