Top 4 or Bust...

It's almost like a position 5th to 8th buffer zone (reminds me of a popular theme on here several years back)
If we miss top four but still make the eight most wont be too disappointed
But he should not be re-signed should we miss the 8 again next seSon

I agree with most of the comments, with a qualification: if we don't have long-term injuries, some players are simply unreplaceable: Tedesco, Woods,Moses, Simona, Nofoaluma.
Finishing 5-8 will be difficult in any case, but if Tedesco or Woods are out for a half of season 8th position will sound like a pipe dream.
:sign:

In 2017, top 8 is a realistic goal we should be able to achieve. Unfortunately, top 4 is unrealistic.

In 2018, with the right retention and recruitment, we should be aiming for top 4.

Taylor held accountable for something Mayer said…OK...

JT said he would fix our defence as it was holding us back, he has failed, nothing to do with Mayer, I will just give up with you blokes.

Its my biggest issue with the club. There is no accountability from coaches to players. Players miss tackles game in and game out, no improvement and get selected. Management set targets for the coach, they aren't hit and they are still happy. Compare that to a club like the bulldogs, make the finals every year, and coach has been told not good enough. We don't make finals, our defence is getting worse, yet our management and board talk the coach up . Our targets are all fluff.

Are you a troll or just stupid, I said the club makes all these statements every year, just in the last 2 years we have had, top8 2016, top 4 2017\. JT making promises he can't keep about our defence, yet when we fail, no one says we have failed, this guy is accountable, it is always we are improving this happened that happened, how about just do it instead of fluff stories about going to do it.

Taylor never promised or guarenteed anything about our defence. He made it a goal to fix it, just like any coach worth their salt would have. Yet somehow that has been misconstrued as a promise he made, like when he got the job he put his hand on a bible and said ''i solemnly swear''. It's a blatant lie that he promised anything. He set a goal which is completely different.

Totally agree GNR,when JT got the job he identified our defense was our most concern for years…he set a goal of rectifying that area and had a defensive coach hired, that being Kidwell who we all know has a poor record as a D coach and has been moved on..this year JT has new D coaches and we will see if he can accomplish his goal,as Ink and Geo have stated..this is the beauty of sport, identifying a problem area and trying to rectify it so as to make it successful.. I hope he can improve the team on a great back end 2016,with that improvement a top 8 would be a certainty, top 4 would be sensational...

Agree re: the promise - though our defence has barely improved in the last two years, so the goal has not been met either way, which is disappointing.
I don't really like JT talking down expectations or goals tbh - nothing wrong with saying 'yes we're aiming for the top four, I'd imagine every team in the comp is doing the same'. Marginal improvement year to year doesn't really cut it in the short-termist NRL in 2016.
Also, Mayer was a massive shit talker, wasn't he.

I did a bit of searching on the net and look what I found, Mr JT himself talking about defence. Have a read please

_"Defence is number one for us because we have been really, really poor in the past. Looking at the past few seasons, we’ve conceded 110 tries last year which was last in the competition and funnily enough the year before in 2013 we conceded 120 tries which wasn’t last because Parramatta were worse but that is really, really bad. We’ve got to change that and if you want to be in the top eight in the NRL you need to get yourself up the ladder as far as the defensive performances go.

It was 2005 when Wests Tigers last won the competition and that was the last time that a team who were better in attack than defence won the competition. It has been 10 years now and we need to improve our defence. If we don’t do that we will remain at the bottom of the ladder. We can continue to work on our attack all we like, but if we don’t improve our defence we won’t get up the ladder and we need to start that right now."_

So many promises about defence, telling us it's number one. The buck stops with JT and no one else on this one.

I can't see any promises in there either. JT is stating facts and saying its an area the team needs to improve in - no promises though.

Stats will tell us our defence was terrible last year, but from a bloke sitting in the stands I think for the majority of the year it improved out of sight. Now before I get screamed down, I do concede we leaked a lot of points, but unlike the previous few years in a lot of games we actually held quality teams out close to our line for multiple sets. In the past six tackles for the other mob close to our line was a gimme six points.

We had about three or four major blow out games that of course was unacceptable but the rest of the year we showed improvement and I think they have something to build off for this year. I might be blind and trying to find reasons to be optimistic but I think our defence could be pretty good in 2017

Our scramble improved a fair bit… So I guess you can say the attitude required for defense improved a bit as well....it had to as they go hand in hand
Defensive structure and communication still needs a lot more work
.... But scramble defense is panicky desperate defense, it eventually fails... Structured defense is precise cool deliberate defense which force errors in attacks and succeeds

**And that is reasonable because it's probably true. If you want to criticse Taylor for not reaching his goals, go nuts. But when people talk about his imaginary promises is when they start to try and re-write history.**

You are probably right, the will and attitude to defend for long periods improved, but the clinical structure was still not there and at the end of the day a strong reliable structure is what is required.

Your blind love is amazing, I have to hand it to you. You will stick solid no matter what. Not only does he tell us how bad previous tigers team were, he tells us how important defence is, how it's number 1, and how if he doesn't fix it we won't make semis. How defence is more important than attack. There you go buddy Jt's whole coachinvmantra based on defence. Tell me again how he has done defence wise during his tenure?

Oh your actually looking for the word promise lol.

Yeah i am actually, and i didn't see it anywhere. There's a difference between making a promise and setting a goal. Google it if you don't understand it.
