We bought a reserve grade hooker already ruled out for season last year.
That worked out well.

When did Ballin play reserve grade?

The simple answer is this year …with us.
He was released from his 2016/17 contract with the Eagles because he was not in Manly's first grade plans just after he signed a new contract.
He never got a chance to play reserves there because of injury.

Once here he conceded himself he would be playing reserves for us (courtesy of The Australian in May this year)...

'The man meant to be Robbie Farah's replacement has conceded he will have no problems playing reserve grade for the rest of the season if coach Jason Taylor desires, with Matt Ballin conceding the State of Origin veteran deserves the No.1 hooking job.'

Make of it what you wish.

Actually he didn't get injured until round 24 last season and had stayed in first grade after they had announced they wanted him gone (mid to late July), so he did have a chance to play reserves but as far as Toovey was concerned he was their number 1 hooker and he played first grade.

.

Toovey and Ballin handled things well.

Taylor and Farah could learn a lesson or two from it.

We now don't pick our best 17 for must win games and Farah takes pot shots at the coach in the media.

Mortimer would be a handy pickup on a second tier deal.
I assume Ballin and Liddle will be our starting 9 combo next season.

Ballin should retire he was terrible for manly in 2016 and injured with us this year.
He has nothing left to prove can't see him playing next year would be a major step back.
He was a legend no doubt but his days are well and truly up.

Ballin was decent for Manly in 2015 - barely played in 2016 due to injury. We don't need a superstar, just someone to fill a gap defensively, provide good crisp service to the halves and help young Liddle on and off the field. Provided he makes a recovery, he'll be perfect for that role next season.

I remember his rookie year at the Eels and how he was lauded as the next big thing. I could never see it. As someone said before Daniel Mortimer = John Morris.

His signing would go to further proving the theory that JT doesn't see hooker as a high value role. Tackle, tackle, tackle and pick the ball up from the deck and pass it.

That's it.

Do not run, do not engage the markers, do not kick from dummy half etc

The coach wants a hooker playing that role and so he should with the halves we have.
Days are gone where we needed farah to fill the number 7 void partner for Benji we juggled for nearly a decade. Prince, Lui etc etc.
We don't need a creative hooker right now,let alone a aging one.
As the Newcastle Knights players said. Just pass it to Joey.

Wasn't Manly paying most of Ballin's contract for this season, with us having to pay for the second year?

I hope I'm mistaken. The rumours that he may 'retire' next season, the season we'd have to pay him, are too much of a coincidence given the way they're treating Farah if so.

We should go after that young bloke at the Tigers Manaia Cherrington. Would come cheap for an opportunity and looks the goods.

He went to the Sharks in 2016, doubt they'd let him go. Would like to have seen him in our colours tho.

Yet we are happy to let a NZ development player go. So much pressure on Liddle, if he doesnt cut it (i really hope he does) then gee whats the back up plan.

Make of it what you wish.

Worst buy of the season if not decade. Not wanted at his club for a reason. Had knee reconstruction and the tigers sign an ageing hooker on one leg that will miss the first 10 games of the year. He then plays 2 games and needs another knee reconstruction, you dont need hindsight to tell you if it was a bad buy. And we are happy to have a player on one leg be our main dummy half in 2017.

He's no more of a first grader than Farah is, who has actually played reserve grade.

Do some of u realise what the Ballin situation was? He was highly regarded within the club and by coach at the time Toovey. He was told he wasnt in their future by incoming coach Trent Barrett. Barrett wanted to bring some youthful spark which he is entitled to do. However, fact is, Ballin was discared by an outsider, not someone who knew exactly what he brought to the team. Manly backed Barrett as they should, they must trust his judgement. No way in the world Ballin would have played reserve grade last year if he was fit.

The extract from that article isn't a concession that he was going to play reserve grade here, it's just an expression that he was prepared to do that if that's where he was put.

As a 219 game veteran he's no more a reserve grade hooker (in the critical sense you used that term) than Farah is a reserve grade hooker - which is not at all.

Sounds like he was being a professional about it, coming in, not wanting to step on toes. He even called Farah when he signed. He didn't have to do that.

Or maybe that Jacob Liddle kid. He looks alright too.

If I were Mortimer I wouldn't come here. The club is displaying how poorly it treats its players, why would anyone want to come here?

Like who???With the exception of Farah they seem an awfully happy playing group at the moment. Two straight wins and eyeing off a finals berth, why such bitterness???The real question may be why certain player treats the club and the coacheSSS so poorly????Just a thought. 😱pen_mouth: 😱pen_mouth: 😱pen_mouth:

This is where you guys lose me. Robbie is a lifelong Tiger who has been great for us. He is now getting shafted.

JT came to the club, talked a lot of crap about how bad we've been, proceeded to lose us games via his Taylorball approach and then shafts Robbie not based on the team playing to their best.

And yet Newcastle had a great hooker in Buderus who would do a lot from dummy half.

It's all BS. Ennis who is the flavour of the month - takes two steps from the dummy half on most plays unless camped in his own twenty. He also crabs across the field looking for a runner when attacking the opposition line ala Farah. Kicks from dummy half and backs himself to run it. Seems to work just fine for the Sharks.
Taylor wants him gone the board has backed him - end of story.

We must have a lot of masochists in our side given how many have either re-signed or taken up options in their favour in the last 12 months. The only player whose been treated poorly is one with a checkered history of rocky relationships with ex coaches, and even some players. If anyone can tell me another player this administration has supposedly shafted, i'm all ears.
