Unite. Commit. Achieve. Who?

I really think MacDougall needs to clear this up

He is saying sirro went to a bloke in the crowd and said… "Good on you for supporting Balmain//wearing the jumper"...or words to that effect.

We arent Balmain.... I call bulldust on this.....but if he did....and look at the thread title...im sure the board and Mayer wouldnt be happy...and our players should be focussing on the now for the footy, and the future for the club...not the past

Balmain are dead

MacDougalll......explain yourself

Geez, can't a boy say hello to his father anymore?

I know this is probably trivial, but in days where "branding" and being "on message" seems important in the corporate world, who exactly is the current Tigers message of "Unite. Commit. Achieve" aimed at?

It would make perfect sense if it was the playing group; some call-to-arms for them to be better than the past. But, why would any organisation promote the fact that, in the past, we didn't unite and we didn't commit and we didn't achieve?

It can't be aimed at the supporter group because IF we "united" and we "committed", how would we (the supporters's group) achieve?

I just checked on the team announcement for Rd 3 and noticed it there on each player's profile.

Huh?

I don't get it.

To me it seems like a three-word slogan (and haven't we all had enough of them taking the place of leadership and policy?) that must have made some sense at the time.

But, that's amateur hour stuff.

Surely, there's a better vision for building membership numbers than some simplistic slogan that surely won't work because nobody knows who's supposed to be responding to it?

You're right, it is trivial.

Yeh…but it's only trivial if you're ok with supporting an organisation (as I have done with multiple memberships over 8 years or more, and no doubt you have as well....?) who build their marketing around a slogan that lacks a clear audience.

But....hey....see on Sunday at the footy.

Unite: Wests and Balmain
Commit: to Wests Tigers
Achieve: Be a successful merger and win a premiership.

…........or maybe not, let's argue about what Sirro did or didn't do and why.

Let me just say I was also wearing a Balmain jersey. I was just pointing out that Sirro made a point of singling out a guy wearing a Balmain jersey and gave him props. He said "That's a nice shirt mate" or words similar to that and shook his hand, around a huge crowd of fans. I thought it was a little odd of him to indicate to the fans in attendance that he favours one side of the merger. I know he would, and probably couldn't help that he does, and I personally am from the Tigers side of the merger so I'm not saying this lightly. I only posted it because I thought it was conversation worthy. My opinion of it is that he shouldn't have singled the bloke out for his Balmain jersey in a season when "Unite. Commit. Achieve" is our slogan. Then again I work in marketing. I get that some of you would find that incredibly trivial but now a whole bunch of Balmain fans that were there are going to be buyoed by the fact that Sirro is gold and some dyed in the wool Maggies fans that were there would feel rejected by him. It's not a good look.

Lol Macca throws a grenade and runs for cover.

Haha it's true. I remember thinking it was weird at the time though. I mean, it is isn't it? I'm not crazy for thinking it was weird? I'm not trying to provoke a Balmain vs. Wests argument AT ALL.

I'm more thinking where does the player responsibility to the brand message lie? Shouldn't they be told to play down the divide? Obviously he wasn't briefed on it or we've misunderstood the intention of the message.

Thanks for the clarification macca

I guess its hard for fans to move forward when even players and staff cannot either
How confusing would it have been for a kid in a WTs shirt to hear that>?

I am finding it hard to make anything of this.

So, some former Balmain fans go to the game, that are now Wests Tigers fans.
For one reason or another - they bought Balmain jumpers years ago, they or their sons played for a Balmain team in the juniors etc. and they can't afford to buy a Wests Tigers jumper (they are not cheap and everyone can't afford to buy one), and they wear it to the game to fly the colours and show their support. Even though the current jumpers are mostly black - the opposition gets the idea.
Probably all the above also applies to the Western Suburbs supporters who are now Wests Tigers supporters and that do a similar thing.

Now a player who grew up watching Balmain, whose father is a Balmain legend who is thanking the fans for their support etc. sees a Balmain jumper and says "nice shirt mate!"

Suddenly all the died in the wool Magpie fans have their nose out of joint according to you. I don't think so. If Teddy did the same thing in reverse I don't think the died in the wool Balmain fans would be upset either. It's a nice shirt - why is there anymore to it than that?

I think you are making too much of a simple comment.
Did the people all around get their nose out of joint? Probably not.
By making this known (innocent comment or not) it has promoted the Balmain / Wests thing again and now there will be a few Forumers that may get their nose out of joint.

We need to stay away from these types of comments - there are a lot of thin skinned supporters who do not need revving up - they can do that themselves.

You do realize you can buy Balmain and Wests retro jersey's don't you?

While i agree that there wasn't much in it, i have to laugh that everyone who was quick to scoff at this and call it a conspiracy and another case of whinging, were nowhere to be seen a couple days ago when someone posted this.

Come on this guy rubbed out JT last week with aplomb.

Sooner rather than later we will have most of our Harold Mathews squad going thru the NRL.

Why purchase so called Marquee players with the juniors we have coming on.

Oh thats right their the Balmain Boys…....................pfffft.

Why is that?

Replace the words ''Balmain Boys'' with ''Magpie Boys'', and there would have been half a dozen reacting calling him a dinosaur and telling him to move on. As it stands i think only one person replied, and all that reply was was '?????''

I think this is a good example how people from both sides have never moved on, yet we only ever hear about the dinosaurs from one side. If you're a former Balmain fan and you try to downplay that comment then idk how you can say you've moved on yourself, cos if you had, surely that comment would annoy you just as much as the pro-Magpie ones. And i've been here long enough to know if his name was Magpieboydug and was whinging about the other side, you'd be the first to roll your eyes.

If you really have moved on yourself, be consistent and roll your eyes at people from both sides who show this mentality, not just the other side while ignoring the dinosaurs on the side you came from.

No I didn't - that's good to unite.

Never look because I can't afford one of any description.

Can I ask a question ??

What does Unite Commit Achieve have to do with Sirro congratulating a Balmain fan for wearing a jersey

Unite as a club

Commit to a membership (if you can )

Help the club Achieve UNITED

Or maybe something we should do

Unite with one home ground

Commit to having one home ground

Achieve everything we want for our club having one home ground

Making money ,increased memberships and creating a home ground everyone fears coming to

It's merely a discussion Russell. ..The irony in your post is amusing however

In the end it's just another dopey idea from a marketing guru who has no idea of the people he/she is aiming the message at.

Haha I can guarantee if any Maggies fans overheard it they would have not been happy. See your last paragraph for confirmation.

This isn't a Mags vs Tigs conversation homie. Obviously the WT marketing department haven't given Sirro their brand guidelines haha.

Wow, we really debate the big issues on here, don't we? I'm an old Magpie but tomorrow you'll see me at ANZ with my WESTS TIGERS jersey on because that is who I follow and that is to whom I pay my membership money.

Just remember, without this merger, none of us would have a team to follow.

Look it's easy to throw the stones but

Not to bring up the whole baloney up again but originally Balmain didn't need Wests Magpies cause they made the cut in the Competition but thought they were better off joining with a Foundation Club like themselves , but had Balmain gone on there own they would of gone broke and would of been extinct by now.
So to a certain extent Wests should be grateful that Balmain was more than happy to merge cause maybe Wests could of been like Newtown extinct and so would of Balmain extinct as they are broke .

So everyone has done each other favours , let's unite and stop throwing stones at each other .
Wests Tigers is what we all are.
