Bennett calls for grand final replay

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has called for the reintroduction of NRL grand final replays to replace the golden point period.

His comments come after the Broncos went down harrowingly to North Queensland in extra time despite leading for almost the entire second half.

The seven-time premiership-winning coach has long been an adversary of sudden death overtime since it was ushered in for the 2003 season following a drawn State of Origin series in 2002.

Bennett re-iterated his stance against golden point, claiming the result is a lottery.

"It's just unfair on everybody. I would've been happy to come back next week and play again," Bennett said post-game.

"I still don't see what's wrong with a draw. The season doesn't have to change anything. For 100 years we didn't have golden point and we still had a great game."

Having led for the final 46 minutes of the match, the mastercoach looked likely to snare his eighth premiership until Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt crossed on the fulltime siren.

North Queensland skipper Johnathan Thurston had a chance to steal the win with a sideline conversion, but his in-swinging attempt hit the crossbar.

Brisbane still had the chance to win in golden point, however halfback Ben Hunt grassed Feldt's kickoff, gifting Thurston supreme field position for the match-winner four tackles later.

Not since Manly and Cronulla were brought back for a re-match in 1978 has rugby league enforced a replay.

St George and Parramatta were also recalled for a second grand final the following year.

Bennett denied being bitter of the extra period, but said a different method was needed to decide the result given the grand occasion.

"You're talking about a grand final here. You're talking about everything on the line," he said.

"It's not the way that, personally, I want it decided, as a coach or as a player."

Victorious Cowboys coach Paul Green opted not to weigh into the debate.

"It's not worth talking about, we won the comp," he said.

Former Cowboys board member and respected rugby league commentator Ben Ikin weighed into the debate on Monday, telling SEN radio it was time for the NRL to abolish golden point in finals matches.

"I think the NRL needs to look at (extra time) when it comes to finals. I don't mind the golden point through the season, but come finals time go the full extra time," he said.

"I don't think teams need to lose in extra time off the first field goal kick.

"I'd much prefer it to go five minutes each way. I'm not into grand final replays, and I generally think you'll find a result in the game of rugby league if you go the 10 minutes."

Despite Bennett's comments post-match, Ikin, who is married to the master coach's daughter, said the Broncos mentor held no grudges.

"I was in the sheds after the game … and I said to him `no losers tonight coach' and he said `you're exactly right, I don't feel like a loser'."

Personally I agree that golden point sucks, but would an equal amount of time each way for extra time be OK?

Imagine if they still had grand final replays in 1989....

The idea of a Replay is ridiculous, but I dont like Golden Point deciding the Premiers.

Extra Time or Golden Try is a better result.

Those 4 tackles for the Cowboys last night was an embarrassment for our game.

For a game as epic as it was, for it to end off the back of a soft mistake like that was criminal. The game didn't deserve that.

Uncle Benny said his team didnt deserve to lose "its not about winning and losing, you guys have to understand that" Typical bitter old twisted delusional fool.

A replay on Tuesday? nice try Wayyyyne

Should be 10 each way in extra time, was never anything wrong with that.

During the home and away series scrap golden point and go back to the draw, but the grand final the golden point is the only way to get a result, coming back the next week is just a massive let down

Bennetts negative tactics in the second half lost him the game that they had won for all money. When you loose a grand final its best leaving the talking to the winners

I agree, the fitting end would have been the successful conversion by Thurston from the sideline.
God on the cowboys, their current team, have won their club a historic maiden premiership. Nothing can change that.

Golden point is an amateurish and unprofessional way of determining the winner of big games like the GF. Declare joint premiers if no result at the end of extra time or replay the game

Both teams know the rules…not a fan of GP myself but really Unce Wayne it just sounds like....

To be fair he's been opposed to GP since it came in. Extra time would be okay. Golden try doesn't really work - it would need to be first to 4 points

Wests Tigers have one of the worst records in Golden Points so I am with Bennett - no golden points in any NRL match.

Only because we're the only club that have the rules enforced against them. Everyone else doesn't need to worry about offside just us.

No we're just too slow to the kicker. Didn't you see how fast the broncs got to JT? Better than olympic standard and they were all square at dummy half too lol

Reminds me of one against the Raiders at Campbelltown years ago where Carney was about 5m offside. The refs justification was something along the lines of "yeah, he went early, but Hodgson missed the field goal anyway, so it didn't matter."
