The Balmain Tigers and Wests Magpies will always exist whether it be State Cup, Bundy Red Cup or the junior reps squads from either JDRLFC.

I love watching the Balmain brand run around in State Cup and always have but if this is what it takes for the Wests Tigers to move forward than so be it. Full time players with a full time coach using the best training facilities available to the club. Surely everyone can see the benefit of this.

As Gobbs has alluded to hopefully with the independant commission coming in we will see the rationalisation of the reserve grade competition under NRL team banners. This will strengthen not only the Reserve grade stocks but will breathe much needed life into the third tier competitions.

The simple reality is that as soon as this season approaching the leagues club grants to Wests Tigers will not be something we rely on. If fact a semi successfull finals campaign will see us operate at a profit without the grants next season. The dependancy is dying off and so will the influence of people who want to stagnate rather than move forward.

One lesson that people should have learnt since the end of the Super League debarcle is that it is the clubs responsibilities to do what is best for the game first and foremost. Strengthening the reserve grade structure into a national commodity strengthens the third tier of competetive rugby league and re-establishes a clear pathway for players to follow.

I will happily go and support the Balmain or Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers in a Bundy Red Cup competition if that is what occurs. The level of competition they are competing in does not matter

What you mean Ashfield doesn't provide funding to the Wests Tigers? Last time I checked there annual reports all three leagues club provided equal funding to the value of 500k I think (can't remember the exact amount but it was mentioned in the reports). Wests Tigers are nearly self sufficient. Ashfield also fund the State Cup team with Campbelltown funding the junior league. From my understanding Ryde Eastwood Leagues funds the Balmain Ryde-Eastwood state cup side.

Ok - that does ring bells with me now. Thanks. Just to clarify, would that be a total funding of $1.5m from the 3 leagues clubs or does Ashfield/Campbelltown provide a total of $500k? I think it was the latter?

Couple of things in the background:

- The issues regarding the redevelopment of the Balmain Leagues Club. Is the leagues club funding in jeopardy if the redevelopment is not approved? Does merging the two teams reduce pressure on the Balmain leagues club?

- Again - the involvement of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues club. Do Wests Tigers wish to cease this arrangement?

Finally, just on some other posts, Gobbs is 100% correct (excellent post might I add too). The Tiger is by far and away one of the most successful marketing logos in the NRL. It was the only reason why Parra wanted to merge with Balmain and it was a no brainer Western Suburbs with regard to giving up the Magpie.

What is the arrangement in place with the SFS for WT to hold their finals campaign there though? Are we given a flat payment to let them host it, a percentage of gate takings or a combination of both? (flat fee upto say 30,000 then 30% of additional gate takings?)

That was my first impression as well Simon.

When I read Gobbsy's post, which as always is extremely well written, I doubt he would have written that 11 years ago such was the emotion of the time. But the Wests Tigers have been such a success story, I think that a vast majority are now ready to move on for the betterment of the Wests Tigers. I disagree with Smeg about seeing your old club running around in state cup. I felt it was sad seeing Balmain and Wests going around in such an ordinary competition …. bit degrading in a way for two proud clubs such as ours.

Lets hope they can come up with something better than state cup and have Wests Tigers as the team in it. The NYC competition has been a resounding success ...... lets hope they can give us something better for the over age players.

Yeh,this sort of thing is the problem.

Personally,I see the Wests Tigers as a new club with Wests and Balmain in it.If Balmain or Wests fans think that the WT culture is a continuation of the old clubs were just kidding ourselves.

And I"m happy with this however I want the new club to also equally represent the old clubs also.I think the JV is very fair but the media must be educated to a little more of the Wests side so I don"t have to explain to some people that the Wests Tigers are not just about Balmain.

For me,when I hear that perhaps Balmain have some financial problems I'm not happy to hear that and wouldn"t want one side to exploit the other.

But for those of us that its important to see the "white" in our colours or the "gold " in our colours the little things are important.

I just want to feel a legit link with the past so I don"t think the 700 or so games Ive seen live were all for nothing. 😢

As you know as a western suburbs magpie and as a resident of the west yo know what its like to live with a stigma attached no club i repeat no club would have survived with the amount of crap that wests had to put up with in their history we are and will be the eternal survivors in the face of rich class attempts to do everything in their power to see us fail.just as a side note i am successful in life and now live in the city before blacktown but i am forever proud and loyal to what made me the man i am today.sometimes the nicer view comes when you climb the higher mountain.
