Tamou keen to extend Cowboys' woes at Leichhardt fortress

Wests Tigers captain James Tamou knows better than most what a fortress Leichhardt Oval can be when the ground is packed to the rafters on a sunny afternoon in rugby league heartland.

Tamou was part of four games for four losses when he donned the Cowboys jersey against his new club across eight seasons at the suburban venue.

On Sunday, he'll lead the joint venture on to the sacred turf searching for his first win at the ground in what is set to be an emotional day following the passing of rugby league icon Tommy Raudonikis on Wednesday.

"A very tough place to play if you're an opponent, definitely," Tamou told NRL.com.

"The crowd is right on top of you and it feels like there's 50,000 watching. We used to dread it at the Cows because you knew you were in for a tough one.

"It didn't matter who the Tigers had in their team or who we had in our team, they came out firing."

While it's been five years since Tamou departed North Queensland, nothing has changed for the Cowboys with the struggling club losing their past nine games at Leichhardt Oval.

It's a dominant record that stretches back to 2001 and a dominance the Wests Tigers want to keep over their counterparts.

However, the possible return of Jason Taumalolo, to go with the Cowboys' 0-4 start, has Tamou wary ahead of facing his former club.

"I hate these games against teams that are in a so-called hole. When their backs are against the wall, you don't know what they're capable of and they're very unpredictable," Tamou said.

"When you go up against the Storm, you know what to expect; you know what to prepare for.

"But a team like this with their backs against the wall and nothing to lose, they just play unpredictable football and sometimes that's the hardest football to play against."

The Tigers showed promise in last week's loss to the Eels with the 36-22 scoreline not a true reflection of how close the side got to causing an upset.

"I said after the game to the boys, comparing the game to the week before against Newcastle we weren't at our best in both games," Tamou said.

"The positive out of the Eels game was we were there with five minutes to go but mentally we weren't quite there with a couple of errors.

"The game could've been different but we've just got to keep our chins up and have a positive outlook.

"There were a couple of drop balls in key moments and we can learn a lesson in that.

"We need to start better. The narrative there is we're not playing 80 minutes. We were looking like we were only dipping our toes and just testing it instead of starting fast."

Tamou has been unusually quiet statistically since making the switch to Concord but said he was confident of finding his feet soon.

"Alex [Twal], Zane [Musgrove] and myself can be better there and it's up to us to change that," the 32-year-old said.

"You're not a leader if you haven't got followers. The boys want to listen and learn so that makes it easier."

I've seen a few news places and even commentators saying we are wearing western suburbs jerseys tomorrow? I thought we were just wearing our black jersey instead of our orange ones?

If true, it’s a great effort to get it organised in such a short time, well done to all involved.

Can anyone tell me if members can go as normal and use our passes to get in and have our allocated seats

I would hope so.

Was hoping Tuki would have stayed in, but seeing he remains, maybe BJ has served his time and Mbye is back to the bench?

Gee wiz I'm disappointed that we did not give Simpkin the 14 this week v Cows instead of Chee Kam...

This would of been the perfect game for it and just give him maybe 20-30mins. He would be flying around the park creating havoc.

Anyway time will tell.

you're right if there was a week this would be it

The amount of confidence going into this game is absolutely crazy. Sure we should be favourites but talking about 30+ point victory when we've done nothing is really over the top. I hope we win and I think we're a chance but we're going up against an NRL team desperate for a win and I wouldn't be surprised if they beat us based on our current form. We have to improve to win. I don't see anything in our team that says clear victory over them, so on what basis are we better than them? Our forwards? Our backs? I think perhaps our halves are better but there's not much between these teams.

Madge is very, very conservative by nature. With selections and game plans. Even the guys dropped, like Garner, Benji and Chee Kam all came back without doing anything differently in 2020. I.e. Madge likes those 'core' guys. Let's hope Sunday is Chee Kam's one good game in two dozen...he is due, anyway. It has been about 18 months since he last did anything of note...

I don't like moving Mbye out of the 14. I liked him coming off the bench to play lock (not so much to play hooker) and I think we should have persisted with that. Talau has had a few poor defensive reads but he looks classy at centre and I don't like moving him. Is there no one else who can play wing?

Second issue is that Tamou and Twal both play the plodder forward role and I don't think both should be in the team. We've got Musgrove and Mikaele as impact forwards and Tamou, Offa and stefano as workers. Twal couldn't get back on the field because of this against Parra, you don't need that many plodders on the team.

I agree with this. Don't like being pessimistic but I can't let myself think 30+. My ideal world we keep them to zero

Mbye has to play this week. It’s audition time against a weak team. Madge should structure all set plays for Mbye.

Well there we go. No Simpkin or Simpkins. I hope this means Liddle is feeling good to play 80...we need a proper dummy half for the entire game. Every time Liddle goes off our attacking structures break down.

I have a feeling he may be the 14 tomorrow with BJ in the centres. Chee Kam to drop out.

Somebody pointed it out somewhere on social media , that I the captains run or the training run on Friday , that BJ was wearing the green Nd black training shirt , along side , what looked like the starting team . It could have just been for that session , but it’s not off the cards .

I hope not, AJ is better on the wing than BJ is at centre and I don't think two weeks in reserves will have changed that.

So am I but can also understand why this week wouldn’t be as well with everything going on with Tommy. It’s going to be a massive day and all the players preparation etc will be tested.
