I love how no one has entertained the possibility that Rankin could be a smokescreen for Suli. Nope straight for the jugular. Footy's back baby!!

This does seem likely given where they've played in the trials.

Suli to the wing, Rankin to the bench in place of MCK or Edwards.

If Suli can survive the chop Thursday night, I think he'll play.

beat me too it. Lets see what the next team sheet looks like before we go getting all worked up.

Fwiw, he was named on an extended bench for the Cowboy trial, also in jersey 21, and he was a late inclusion into the starting side. There's definitely a method here. Maybe the 21 jersey is the only one that fits him. He's a big boy.

He is a giant of a kid.

Actually what is the Jersey situation with NRL clubs now days? Is it new ones every week or do the players take turns every week washing them and they also bring the oranges that week?

Rankin washes them every week. It's the only reason JT keeps him in the team.

Basically the same side bar a couple that got smashed by the Raiders. Iam far from confident

I can't believe anyone is surprised Rankin has been selected - Moses normally kicks goals - he has been in a moon boot for weeks he isn't going to kick goals. So at a minimum we need someone to kick goals and Rankin is the best goal kicker by far given Moses is out and Simona fecked up his career.

Also with Moses and Brooks having been injured then having back up in Rankin available makes sense as MCK can go into the backline

I would think once Moses foot is fixed enough to kick goals it may be reassessed.

As for the rest of the side MCK gives good backs and back row coverage, Edwards give good coverage at prop and also bench hooker but without wasting a whole spot on a bench hooker when you don't need too. Given the injuries we have been facing this is the right squad

Hey boonboon, can you please not make a sensible post some of these guys on here wouldnt be able to comprehend a sensible solution..remember with these guys unless its what they say ,then its all gloom and doom…

Hey look at the positives

I was expecting someone to have named a Forum 17 when I saw Rankin had been picked

Maybe Rankin has improved his kicking

No surprises really. Like everyone else who has a bit of commonsense, only 2 changes need to be made, Suli and Rankin and Felise for Edwards.

Can McLLwrick play 80 mins? If not who do you see out of the Round 1 team going in to Dummy Half for 20-30 mins?
I'd prefer ET to stay at lock. That's where he seems to play his best footy, so I'm hoping it's not him.

Sure Rankin is a kicker (not the best but still a kicker), IMO thats about the only thing he brings to the table. If we score 5 tries his kicking average suggests that he will kick 3, 6 points.

I think Suli is at least a chance of scoring 1 try which means we are selecting Rankin on a 2 point margin.

The experience Suli will gain from a FG showing is worth the 6points rankin is likely to kick. Rankin is not going to get better. He may have a good game here or there but in the long run we are better off blooding Suli.

Is there anything that man Rankin can't do? By the end of the year he'll be 5/8 and Captain/Coach. JT better watch out.

PS. Another question . If Moses can't kick, who'd have Teddy as goalkicker?

So JR is channeling RF.

One goal doesn't make a kicker but if he is deemed to be 70% or better and it doesn't impact his game or legs then I would prefer him over Rankin, then we don't give away a position and put someone with genuine potential or capability in there.

surely rankin has to be JT love child , nothing else would explain him been picked. I really thought this would be a season when we would pick our best players but that has gone out the window.

There are a few reasons actually, but why bother putting a bit of thought into it when you can just resort to the most ridiculous theory.

its seems JT may have another love child.

Wow, you got me there

I was just starting to get excited again about another season approaching, but I have given myself a reality check. It seems Taylor wants to play the year with the same cattle, hence same result. I won't be surprised if Rankin is picked every game, be it fullback, winger or bench player. I feel for form players like Chee Kam, I fear once Lovett is available again, we won't see Chee Kam in the NRL barring a catastrophic run of injuries.

Even if Rankin plays ahead of Suli this week, it won't be because the Taylor is playing favourites. I don't even know how that thought process is even possible considering they just re-signed Suli on a million deal. But their keeping him out of first grade because JT rates Rankin more highly? Sounds legit 😕

http://www.nrl.com/news/weeklyfeatures/teamlists/tabid/11656/default.aspx

The thing is about this team, although it looks good, there are 3 players in the squad that remain unknowns…eg

Idris ..how will he come back and be an 80 minute player as intense as he was ?
McIllrick..will he be an excellent NRL standard hooker playing 80 ?
Moses Suli..Rookie,unproven at NRL,big contracts don't always make them big players,he may need time..

Taylor has to me picked a very good team...I know,I know Rankin,JT must have reasons why he has JR in the side, and yes bring on the car washing etc,etc..Taylor is looking to win games and make this team a competitive one week in week out...CONSISTENCY is the key word,Taylor also has to find out how this team works as a unit on game day not just in preseason or in trials,so if there are changes during the next couple of weeks barring injury, then he will get a guide on how he can get the best out of the players available...
I will back Taylor to produce some great results this year and the one thing I will say is that JT will do the best for the team and club,he has always been true to his convictions, and taken responsibility for his decisions..
I will see how we are going by round 6 and then reassess my view....best of luck to all concerned during 2017,may the injuries by less and the wins enormous.... :supporter:

But in my mind if correct that is the problem. Our coach rates rankin above Suli.

If the coach rates Rankin higher than Suli then it looks like Rankin will be getting a contract worth over a million dollars next year.
