Wests Tigers V NZ Warriors Trial *Live Thread..

My take:
- AT LAST we have a team that can create attacking opportunities. Very very exciting
- Doueihi to fullback (just) due to his linking and passing in the backline
- three wingers were solid so I’ll leave it to Madge
- Marshall too involved at first receiver. Both he and Brooks are better when they share this role
- Taylor for 13 on today’s effort
- Walters for 9 with Reynolds on bench. Reynolds was very good today. Walters solid but D an issue
- Musgrove and Twal stand outs. Mikaele a weapon but needs to be more aggressive
- There will be a lot of jumping into our wagon this year. We are going to do ok I think

How will this trial game translate into Rd 1..?

Depends what 17 Madge names .....

Obviously the win will bring us confidence.
We saw that BJ trusts to pass to his winger.
We know our forwards are definitely GOOD.

Yep winners are grinners and losers can kiss our ass

Elijah Taylor was pretty good today. Maybe he grabs a bench spot for round 1. Lock is the position he’s best at and that’s where we lack the most

Reckon that he wrestled control back to our forwards and literally at that. His energy was enormous out there this afternoon and right up until his last involvement.

Arguabley turned the game with the one on one steal. Has to be in front of Lawrence and McQueen in the pecking order now.

I expect that Maguire has been looking to get a bit more oomph into the side by trailing Aloiai at lock, but as you alluded to earlier, the guy gets gassed really quickly and apart from one good tackle, he looked like he was playing in slow motion and a step behind in his second stint.

Reckon the only thing that could keep Elijah out, is Maguire wanting Eisenhuth as the bigger body, though he may well take both intomround one.

I honestly don't want Eisenhuth in our top 17....

Aloiai looked great but maybe we need Elijah at 13 and Aloiai still on the bench.

Not both, E.T looks a lock for now on the bench. Aloiai may start with Rowdy/LL and Garner.

Mikaele off the bench to replace Muzza

Walters’ durability was doubled by Reynolds IMO and I’d personally be very cautious about taking two dummy halves into season proper this yr. Temperament of the game and refereeing is changing and I feel it suits Mbye/Josh. Then, you elevate Simpkin and Seyfarth for the lock and hooker positions potential future! How’d everybody feel about Talau’s limited involvement?

Lets say Mbye and Garner aren't fit Rd 1 and what about Huth .....

Despite the 2 tries we can't have Nofo with his terrible defensive reads on the wing, I've seen it too many times to ignore it now, he obviously hasn't improved that part of his game .

I see this sort of comment a lot and it makes me go and take a second look.

Here's the play the ball, you can see the ruck marked and make note that Thommo has been involved in the tackle so can't be expected to cover if we slide in. Note the lines showing defenders numbered against attacker - we are already a man down - they have an overlap.

One of the keys here is the player marking the attacking (decoy) runner is flat-footed (circled). This means he is no chance of shifting out to support. Note also this has created a gap between him and BJ.

This leave Joey and Nofo left to defend three (which they can't do) and a gap inside you could drive a car through. Nofo (I believe correctly) comes in to try and kill the play at the centre but the ball goes wide and they score.

It was a simple overlap right from the ruck - I'm not sure why the winger is blamed for it.

I'm happy to deride players when they do the wrong thing but too often people's personal dislikes for a players get in the way of reasoned analysis.

Outside this, I thought BJ went well but has a tendency to hold the ball too long. Musgrove was impressive and I was very impressed with Luciano - he could turn out to be a great buy.

I thought Grub looked solid in the halves and showed slightly better form at hooker than previous games. Walters service is great but he's a little light in defence. I don't think we had a bad player, everyone went pretty well.

Wrote earlier that Talau looks more effective on the left with his better right arm fend. I think Aloiai serves a much more effective role as an impact bench prop and pales in comparison to other lock options at the club.

Good post...add to it apart from that TRY..the Warriors didn't look like scoring so the defensive effort despite lack of ball was great for the majority of the game for which I blame all of them..

To tell you the truth, VOR, Nof should’ve held in exactly the same format as BJ n his inside man (circled). Then begin to slide out, seeking further cover or batting an effort at the ball/winger.

It’s pretty simple defensive coaching - Nof’s mindset defies his natural ability in D. CT is much more effective in rushing in off his wing tactically.

Always trying to end the play right then and there, when on a good day the ploy Madge has proven works (on the other side all game) is to hold!!!

I think people will continue to make excuses for the few players we have that DO indeed make up for their shortcomings in exciting ways , as Dave always tends to... but it’s just that. Rose coloured glasses and not some kind of slight on somebody’s character or previous value to us

The 2 things that sold AD as fullback of choice for me was his positional play and his high aggressive bomb take then offload.

He has height which none of our backs have - we need it.

The area AD needs to work on is his support play. CT is miles infront of him on this.

BJ/LL just another level of wow factor for Us, its a trial but exciting times ahead.

Walters looked solid but we looked faster in attack with Jrey there. Defence with either will suck.

Musgrove & ET must be in the team round 1.

I would agree on most of this, but the proximity to both touch and try line were used terribly in this instance for mine and there was no need to rush up. I often stand up for Nofo and he is often incorrectly maligned, but he wears the blame from me on this occasion.

I'd go Douehi to fullback, Corey to right wing.

Doueihi looks pedestrian

He’s looked pretty good to me...

Yeah, but you're not much of a judge

Well I am and he does look good. Safe under the high ball, good defence and doesn’t seem to make mistakes.

Can kick goals and is a very good 5/8. What is it about him that you don’t like?

Something about our defence is it looked solid today but not the scrambling extra effort muck of past years, our line actually looked intact and solid

You can argue Noffa made a bad read, but he made up for that with two tries, some strong runs and some good offloads. Plus him and BJ playing together is mouth watering. Got a good taste of it today.
