@MacDougall said:Lol Roach and Sironen would have absolutely no bearing on the selections. His surname might lend him a few more chances before getting dropped but he got to first grade by proving he was better than the lower grades. He carved up U20s the few times he had to play there and in the two games in NSW Cup he played this year he smashed them. His few games in first grade when he was a big five-eighth were actually quite good outside Marshall.
I think his main issue at present is a bit complex. He's recently put on a ton of weight (bulked up to get into the forwards) which has affected his speed and agility which has very much affected his defensive abilities. As a half he's actually quite a good defender, but defending in the backrow next to a rookie half is a totally different ballgame. The Roosters game planned to target him with quick interchanging passes and because he had a poor defender on his outside he got beaten time and time again either untouched or with a through the ruck offload. Not only did this tire him out and make him totally useless in attack, being repeatedly destroyed by his opponent would have ruined his confidence too. If you need any more proof, the backrower on the other side missed zero tackles to Sironen's six and made just as many. The Roosters started using this tactic on both sides of the ruck but it only worked on Sironen's side. Brooks missed a bunch of tackles, Sironen missed a bunch of tackles. Halatau and Moses missed 1 between them.
I reckon that Robinson probably identified this around half time so they went to him every time in the second half.
Sironen needs a very tough off season of defensive positioning drills, studying common backrow attacking structures and lateral movement if he's to make a fist of it as an NRL backrower.
Only time will tell if he's any good . This club is known for favouring certain players , by continually selecting them no matter what form they are in. Lets hope Curtis improves for the teams sake.
