WT v Knights round 1 ‘25 predictions

It's been said many times, but as useful as statistics can be, they don't always tell the full story.

Don't take that as a criticism of Luke Brooks because I actually like the guy.
100% - if you look at ADs defensive stats you would think he is OK as a centre; his tackle efficiency is around 70%. What doesn't appear is the poor reads that mean he doesn't get to even attempt the tackle.

interesting article discussing the stats that coaches deem to be most useful. Spoiler: many arent. I enjoy looking at the numbers, but there are often a number of confounding variables which limit how useful they really are.

Id be wary dismissing what these successful coaches are saying.
Focusing on push supports, play the ball speed, line engagements and where your kicks are landing are certainly great analytics.

Absolutely. More making the point that not all stats are equal, and generally the ones that are more accessible to fans and media are limited. Set completions, tackle efficiency etc.

I agree, it has been said many times that stats don’t tell the full story and while this statement may be accurate it doesn’t mean stats should be discarded. They’re a useful tool when looking at various activities, achievements and output.
The real difference in those players is the level of desire, confidence and how it transfers to teammates. It’s not something easily measured.

I’ve always assumed number of times a player receives the ball.
I just looked at a quik example Manly v Penrith trial

Passing

Penrith had 247total passes but 432 receipts

Interesting the run metres per ptb. in betterdays article
First was Storm last year with 10.7m per play the ball
Worst= Saints ....9.8m per ptb

Nothing in it, even after a whole game but I guess this is where the roll on begins

How do you determine a push support target and what if those decoy runners are causing obstructions that lead to disallowed try decisions, what does that do to your statistics?

I'm now even more confused than ever about stats and still have a bit of a laugh about Des Hasler's use of stats that determined that Aiden Tolman was the best prop in the game around 10 years ago.

100 percent mate, but thats all we have to go from unless we keep our own records.
They serve their purpose and provide a snapshot of who is working hard and who isnt.
Not definitive, but certainly a broad picture.

I wouldnt take too much notice of the stats during trials. It sometimes appears like they give the newby a go at counting?

My team Rd 1
1.Bula
2.Skelton
3.Douehi
4.Bird
5.Turuva
6.Galvin
7.Luai
8.May
9.TDS
10. Pole
11.Samuela F
12.Twal
13 .Seyfarth
Bench
14 .Latu F
15 Hunt
16 . Faataape

Perhaps a swap between 4 and 16
Assume Olam busted maybe a medical retirement
Naden still recovering from kneecap incident
Bula fully recovered from appendix operation

Probably close to the team but I would have Klemmer at 16 and Fat back in reserves
