Justin Matamua #259

Matamua seems to have potential and it's OK to develop young players at this point of a dead season, but his penalties are costing games.
Against Panthers he cost a try with an obstruction and conceded a penalty in the set that led to the winning Panthers try.

He's only 19 and still learning, and we are missing injured forwards, but is he ready for 1st grade?
He should never have been played in a position he's not used to. He had a shocker on the edge in NSW cup, and then was a different player when moved to lock.

If you're going to play a player to blood him for next year, at least play him in his natural position.

No doubt he cost us the game yesterday, but both clangers where he was in uncomfortable position where he doesn't normally play which totally could have been avoided.

Play him at lock or send him back to State Cup to learn how to play Second Row.

Only 19 with 2 NRL games under his belt in a team that has only won 3 games.

I would start him at lock next week and move Hastings back to Half Back.

Happy with Noddy if he plays AD or Brooks at five-eight.

I'm fine with him playing in 1sts, despite those quite costly mistakes.

He'll learn very quickly how costly they can be. Better to get those lessons at the end of a washed-up 1sts season than in reserves where it doesn't matter nearly as much in terms of consequences or impact.

Simple development eh.

Not thrown in the deep end, ala Matt Groat.

Releasing Luciano, some injuries and the failings of Peachy have put us in a desperate place though.

Offa and Pole have been shining lights though.
Mate, I'm not about to put anything on a kid.... But he's costing us dearly at the moment.

Playing kids (Out of position) In a team that's going to get smacked silly for the next 8 weeks does nothing for no one... Them, Us, The club... Nothing.
He's a puppy - He looks like a puppy - plays like a puppy....
Leave him in lower grades.... He's not Pole - He's at least a full season in lower grades off.

He is learning the trade in the worst way possible by being thrown into FG in a mediocre squad which is coached poorly.Having said that he is a great prospect and one that needs to be persevered with in the future. He is getting exposure in FG about 1-2 years too early due to our poor roster and injuries.Sheens needs to get off his bloater and start to get some hardheads to our club for next season to help him and our other young forwards develop to what we need.
He is definately a keeper imo

Ready enough for the third bench forward role in a side that is the currently very depleted WT for mine, but no more at this point, and certainly not starting on an edge.

He made 3 bad errors in the game which cost us dearly. The pace of first grade is too much for him at the moment, no shame in that. He's had a taste and now for his development needs to go back to playing NSWCup to fine tune his skills in a more modest environment. If we're going to blood a second rower then it needs to be Tumeth. Realistically we need to urgently sign a second rower for this season and next.

If only we had a washed out, disgruntled halfback we could trade with some one for a backrower..... 🤔

The idea for the end of the season is to give these kids a taste of first grade so they can have the experience and develop their game. He’s had the experience now time to go back and finish the year in State Cup and get ready for a big preseason where he can build for next year. Keeping kids too long in firsts can kill any development.

More than one mate...
None of these kids are very imposing
- We need some size somewhere as well...

Mate, I know a prop who may be available. He specialises in backing into the defence and could teach some of our forwards this technique.

This is all part of his education and part of the Tim Sheens development plan/style.

Remember Farah, Benji, Gibbs & Fulton all debuted in 2003 with 3-4 games (mostly losses), a few more in 2004 before 2005.

So we've debuted Junior Tupou, Fonua Pole, Justin Matamua so far (Jake Simpkin similar vain from last season). I'd expect Brandon Tumeth to debut soon as well probably once he is signed up. And it wouldn't surprise me if another out of Jahream Bula, Trey Peni, Henry O'Kane, Sione Fainu & Christian Mainama also get 1-2 games in the final rounds.

This frustrates me. We have a gun junior coming through who looks to be a ball playing 13 and we play him on the edge to try and keep 3 halves in the team.

I'd have him in the team each week and solely playing as a 13.

His best position and where you'd prefer to see him - Doesn't make him ready for NRL.
He's not ready.... No where near ready.
This time next year might be different, He needs more time.
