Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Jason Taylor was the problem there. That pr#ck cost us a decade of good results.

Yes and No...
Listen to Woods take on the teams mind set on it - from his own mouth
on his Bloke interview.

..... We'd win a game and go out for 2 nights on the piss like we're superstars.

Ok you’ve got me. But of that list only Moylan, Finucane, Hynes, McInnes were plucked as developed players.

I’ve really lost the point of this discussion.

Teams use their juniors to build a base. And supplement what is lacking by buying key position players in their prime.
Even the mighty Panthers did it for their recent premiership.

But you can’t fill a top 30 roster with a squad full of experienced players.
Refer back to 2018 we had Tyson Gamble as the only player yet to play first grade.
When we had injures we had cover sure, but we effectively replaced a mid range 1st choice player with a mid range back up player. Besides an aging Marshall and later Farah we didn’t have one player of superstar quality in that side.
We havent had a super star since Teddy

I use to see Teddy Moses and Brooks up at the Hunters Hill Hotel regularly watching the footy together on the weekend during those days. Always found them to be well behaved and just engrossed in the footy, and chatting with the punters. No arrogance or carry on. Occasionally Robbie would be there too.

So we have signed squat since Sheens and Benji took over the reigns while other clubs pick off who they want from the current squad.
Admirable to believe you can change things but foolish to think you can pull off what others have failed to do by aiming for the stars while letting other clubs pick the eyes out of what we do have. They need to land a few soon.
Underestimated how much our leadership have run this club into the mud.

Tolman, Fifita?

And Garner playe 2018....
Odd you mention 2018 - Probably our best year gone and best in the few before.
I agree, You're not going to buy 30 - 700k players.

Not sure what your point is,
But mine is - We're far too lop sided with Kids...
Everyone here is standing in applause while we fill our squad with more.

I don't care how talented they are, They're not going to lead themselves or teach themselves to be NRL Players, And they're not going to ever be consistent.

We continually overspend on kids, to the point where we can't afford to put any leaders or game breakers in there to hold them accountable - Or get the best of them.

Not only is it not going to work - It's dumb!!
But still - Why MUST keep them all....
And we can't bide the time with them, They've all gotta be in 1sts by 20..
Rinse and Repeat
I'm over it.
I said key players. Tolman isn’t exactly a Marque.
Fifita was picked up alongside an experienced Gibbs a great package deal to be honest but was far from the finished product probably became a starting prop for them about 3 years after joining them.

You and I are on the same page to an extent. But you need to keep the best kids from your system in your system.

The recent acquisition of Api Korisou is a decent example of what we need to do to move forward.
As much as fans may have grown to love our starting roster, we really will only improve once we tweak it.

We need the likes of Stefano, Pole, Seyfarth as our depth players not our starters.
These kids need to build into a system and earn their spot.
It’s positions 1-13 you need to rotate to more experience to not 18-30.
Having 3 mediocre experienced players isn’t going to do didily squat to our team.

I’m glad you had a no problem with 2018.

In my opinion yes successful at face value but was it really?
We scored the least amount of points in a season for a decade and won most of our games on the back of penalising teams into frustration.

It looked a lot like the Dragons 2022 squad and season results if you ask me.

Is there enough experience in that team?

Think Moses lives closer to parra now.

Thought I’d share some more interesting info from my NFL coaching manual. I know, different rules but the messages are similar, and one of the reasons some of our best coaches travel to the USA to observe.
This first part refers to retired players and their coaching methods;
“ Back when we were playing football ( at whatever level) we never questioned a coach, never gave anything but our best and kept trying, whatever the score.
The point is that whatever motivated you when you were playing doesn’t have a lot of connection with the younger footballers today.
You must remember this when you are trying to motivate your team.
All the great coaches were able to adapt. They never changed their personalities or preferences, they just adapted their coaching ideas to their team.
The best coaches are never rigid, they never force their team to adapt to their systems, rather it is the coach who must adapt to the type of players they have, and their talents that got them into the top grade in the first place.
So step one is understanding your players and then adapting practices and game plans that nurture their intrinsic skills.”

Imo pretty interesting stuff and I am the first to put my hand up and say “ we did this and that back in my day” but from the above that’s not worth a pinch of salt.
I’m sure some WTF members will get this and others will say what a crock of shit but still think it’s interesting stuff.
Understanding and communication are two of the most important skills in life, let alone footy.

Good post Hal.

Sometimes adapting to coaching players does mean employing tough methods.

But all players should respect the coach.

That’s my worry about GTA , he’s recruited on the matey not on talent or aptitude for coaching.

He’s recruited to distract the rank and file from abject failure this year.

And all the players will know this underneath.

I’d prefer the Des Hasler, knows everything there is to know about the task.

This Munster and Mitch business, we all know we are being used for contract negotiations. Bears dancing on barrels. All the marquees should offer us 2% of their dolphin contract for grovelling to them with absurd offers.

Like the pokie bonus, 100 extra spins, lights and alarms, and we get $2.00

Tim is some kind of coach at least, gripping the wall with his fingernails as he slides down, but GTA is still in the clover. Texting his mates and no one’s getting back to him. Total failure so far, I bet the players are ringing each other laughing about him.

If you don’t get an offer from GTA it’s your shout next time the marquee are out getting plastered.

All I hear on hear is a load of crap , rumours , speculation , we have got nothing solid going forward , I love the way we try to find a good outcome , but until this club or the POM come out and say we have signed a player or 2 it’s all crap , it’s gonna be a long off season as I don’t think November 1 will make any difference , there is 12 teams out of finals and nothing to report on signings

And that is why Madge failed, mister rigid couldn't coach the squad he had, he coached the squad he wanted, no one improved, doomed to fail from day 1, and it did
