Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Sorry Junior but I was happy for Madge to be moved on, but didn’t think it was ALL his fault,
*tigers had an abysmal cap situation since the Cleary debacle, that Madge had to work with/thru
•tigers had a selection panel driven by a an ex roosters recruitment manager (now gone for McDonald) and with interference by our chairman/sponsor (Noffa says thank you)

* Sheens decisions/achievements in 2022

+unable to secure Ciraldo after sacking Madge and no other plan in place, can’t imagine Gus or Politis being that dumb

+appointing Noddy (not noddys fault) instead of one of the better qualified assistant coaches,

+releasing players from an already injury riddled team, and

+publicly declaring his focus was on 2025.

The tigers will/should improve given the change in the tigers cap position, not because of Sheens but because of the quality players we can now afford.

Sheens has failed at Nth Qld, been sacked by the tigers previously and numerous Super League sides.

Since he sacked Madge he has signed 2 players on long term deals + reserve grade player from Penrith
Bateman who has struggled in super league for the past 2 years for abt $700,000 (yea I watch super league, hope he improves, definitely needs to on recent form)
David Klemmer on a reported $800,000 for 2023 then hopefully less for the next 2 years, but should be good
The Ferrari for $500,000 for one year

I don’t think anything above is factually incorrect, but it is just my opinion/observations

This is the first year since Cleary that the tigers have been competitive in the market and Sheens is just a very lucky boy to have this advantage when he is coach + head of football, a completely different scenario to Madge’s term in charge.
Great post

I agree with you TT. Sheens certainly picked his moment and I would agree with you except for one aspect.

If madge had shown some upwards trajectory, we wouldn't be having this conversation. I don't think the expectations were high with the inherited squad, he just delivered even lower.

Sheens also had a pretty cushy job with little accountability, but has jumped back into the fire. That's not nothing.
If Sheens thought the roster was good enough - now he has the job of getting the wins - he wouldnt be so activlely trying to rebuild it.
The roster was always the problem - the coach is just the easiest target.

Yeh roster was the problem, also the coaches game plans and tactics were not not nrl standard. Madge is a great guy and I wish him all the best but we needed a change.

I enjoy the off seasons too. Then the footy starts 😂
Off season is the domain of the happy clapper.
This time last year plenty were yelling season 2022 was going to be a huge success.
For mine, season 2023 looks promising bar 3 important factors…
1. Lack of leadership especially on field. No controlling halves, no general.
2. X factor type strike. We have no Marshal / Farah / Tedesco quality of freak player who can setup points out of nothing.
3. Coaching staff. Mostly green or possibly well over cooked.

We require at least 2 of these issues to become a positive to play finals footy. I can’t see an emerging X Factor so we need Brooks/Doueihi to stand up and lead and we need Sheens to turn back the clock.

I wouldn’t say Sheens has done a great job here yet.
He was somewhat responsible for the 22 spoon. He embarrassed the club with his decisions surrounding the coach - past, present and future. Sure he has signed a couple of guys, and gotten rid of the right players but he hasn’t proven anything as a coach here yet.
I’m intrigued about our chances in 23 but am also very apprehensive. I too remember the cluster that was 2012 and am not convinced he can do the job.
Why does everyone choose to remember 2012 and forget about 2005 and 2011

It’s clear we are building for Benji era and I like what we are doing. We needed to do something different & the team really couldn’t have done much better than they have for 23.

They are getting a pass mark from me to date.

If we get MM that will be a coup, if we don’t we have shown the market a clear intent that we will spend big for a quality player in 24/25 (Munster and MM serious intent).

I’m nervous but somewhat excited for what is building.

Sheens saw enough when Noddy took over with the shackles off how weak the squad was - albeit with a high injury toll that certainly did not help. No coach was going to succeed at this club on the back of some talented juniors without strengthening the team. With full control and the coaches hat on it is pretty evident what has sparked his motivation.

I'd like to get to the Qld games...rd5 v ponies at SC, rd 15 v titans at CBUS.
Good chance we'll beat those sides, We beat the broncs this year with a worse side than what we'll have next year. 🤞
Are you able to get to some games sleeve? Where are you?
That Brisbane game this year was the one I took my young boys to as their first ever live game. So good to get that win.

Hope we can do the same in 2023

My hopes are that finally with a good forward pack that can compete with the best of them, one or two of our existing backline options can spark attack and create tries. We also still have a vacant spot plus the possibility of trading one of the final 2023 year players as Sheens mentioned to add further options.

Roll on 2023 season and hopefully better times for WT.
