I like Frizell, always have, but would’ve preferred to sign him 5 years ago not now. It’s like Klemmer and countless others we have signed over the years, great players in their day, but past their best when they land here. They might have a great work ethic, leadership qualities and try really hard every game, but if we’re not getting the best out of them then what’s the point. Especially so in Frizell’s case if he would prefer to stay with Newcastle.
I tend to agree, though I think there's a key difference right now.
In the past, the older, more experienced recruits that have been bought, often on inflated contracts, to be THE guy.
Reynolds, Tamou, Bateman, etc.
We then gets the shits, rightly, when they can't carry the team out of the mire.
This time, I think we are more buying experience, on lesser deals, to fill the experience gap, whilst others within the side, the Luais, Bulas, Galvins, Latus, Apis and Samuelas of the world, do the heavy lifting around performance improvement.
I think, differently than in the past, that's where a guy like Frizell, on the right contract, can provide value.
