Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

That’s what we said about Marika Koroibete and Josh Addo-Carr when they were regularly scoring long range tries for us in Reserve Grade and we ended up letting them go because we didn’t believe they were good enough defenders.
That worked out really well, they both headed down to Melbourne to become stars and premiership winners.
Good coaches will work with wingers who are attacking freaks to bring their defence up to a satisfactory level,
Unfortunately not even a good coach can turn slower boring wingers into fast, exciting attacking players and try scoring freaks,
And u put strong defenders inside of them....roosters won a GF with a 7 that started the game with a busted shoulder and couldn't tackle. Not every player needs to be a rock in defence.

I think we look at players that go elsewhere and kick on and apply their recruitment strategy to ourselves.

If you have a strong system, like Melbourne and the Roosters, then you can train the players to be better and defend their errors while they are on that journey.

Marika was in our system for 4 years and we didn't improve him in those areas.

Until we have that, those players will be a liability for us and they won't realise their potential at our club. It starts with funding.

Objectively speaking we have far more upside focusing on commercial opportunities than hanging out for leagues club handouts although it helps.

The brand does contribute to the money that goes through HBG and as a non-profit, they need to distribute that or grow their business which would delay any generous funding if it would ever come. I hope with the new club at Rozelle, they are putting funds aside to make that a success and start taking their obligation more seriously.

Anyone looking at the dismal state of our corporate revenue can see why Richo sees where the biggest opportunity for growth is in the revenue generated by the club. Wtf was Pascoe doing for 10 years is my question?

Anyway...all the home ground sugar hits we've been taking from Homebush and Commbank start to make sense when you see the numbers. With lots of money, you can do lots of things across the club and if we've been running the club on the smell of an oily rag for this long, you start to get a better sense of why people want out so often when there are better conditions on offer elsewhere and it's about time someone focused on making some positive changes there.

Wrong thread for this but do HBG give Richo the 1.8m and he decides the best way to invest it? If so that's a tough job because he's starting off the back foot compared to other clubs. And who helps Rich with these decisions?

Side note, everyone bags Pascoe and probably for good reason but didn't he set up Concord? This was so important when trying to attract players.

Look Marika Koroibete and JAC are awesome and would have been 100% Keep.

But JAC had melbourne coach him into defense and became a good defender. If he had stayed, we would have had defensive problems. Melbourne taught him a few tricks...

Would JAC have ended up like Nofa here? Don't know, the pair of them would have been interesting.

We saw with Nofa, that even though he would score the tries... he let as many and often more tries through.

Times have changed. We can't count on an individually brillant player scoring 2 tries if they let 2 tries through in defense. Even when Nofa did score 2 tries in a game, his lack of defense really hurt us.

Guys off topic but has anyone copped a speeding fine in the mail from a mobile speed unit (not police), do they not pull you over.
It would be either a fixed camera on a car or the new ones which are average speed cameras where they clock your average speed between 2 points. Mainly on highways and motorways. Used to only be trucks would get checked but now all vehicles.

There are more educated people than me on the topic and I'm not sure if there are restrictions on how the grant is spent or if he has free reign.

I'd imagine there is an overall budget agreed by the board though.

Agree on the COE making a big difference. It's an important piece of the puzzle. Academies and home ground upgrades will assist also.

You've got to staff these places though and I think that's where we fall a bit short.

Still can't believe they did that with Cronk. It was so selfish of Cronk to do it. Egotistical. Everyone said it was like having a coach out there but pretty sure the Roosters coaching setup was more than capable of organising the side.

Let me ask you.

Skelton has the size and strength.

Khan-Pereira or Stonestreet have the speed.

Skelton can't score long range tries, but gets a lot of barge overs because he's big and strong + he gets the yardage.

Can Khan-Pereira get the same tries Skelton scores without the stregth and size?

Don't you win some and lose some whoever you choose?
It’s always a balance and what is suitable to the team at the time.

you are correct, the $1.8m would be part of the forecast budget and would also be scrutinised by HBG. I would say he would have freer rein on the other revenue streams so beefing those up have a twofold effect 1. We obviously have more money to spend on operations and 2. you are not as answerable to the HBG leadership on the spend so you minimize their influence over the decision-making process.

Exactly this. I don't think Vicious is wrong in that we need more speed across the park but it is very much we would be trading one asset for another. Speed is just one of many assets an ideal winger would have. Speed without other traits alongside it won't make a player a first grade option.
Ive been critical of Turuva, simply due to thinking he is probably a little over valued and certainly over rated on this forum. Despite that criticism he is clearly a good first grade winger. Skelton too is a good winger. I think we have a whole list of issues before we start worrying about our wing options.
We need to sort out our pack before tinkering with our backline. Having said that assuming the likes of Feledy, Naden, Staines, Doueihi aren't around next year I would like to sign a speedy option as the next in line. Simply to provide an asset the side is clearly currently missing.

We have some company in terms of revenue, but we are dead last. I'm unsure what those other clubs get from their leagues clubs. Bulldogs are about mid and they generate about 19.5 million. We are on around 13.5 million. So I'm even comparing to middle of the road we are about 6 mill behind.

The Dogs leagues club tops them up another 7 mill. We get 1.8 mill from HBG as a grant. We are miles behind. All up we operate on about half of what the dogs do.

Here's the detail.

I'm not doubting the 1.8 million grant from HBG but you only use the dogs as a comparison - what about throwing in Warriors, Cronulla, Manly, and Canberra who are all in the bottom 6 clubs for commercial revenue yet 2 are in the Top4, 1 is in the 8 and 1 is just outside the 8. They seem to be doing ok on not much more than the tigers.

Toa has done nothing to earn a pay rise or even an extension. We need to find better, we can't keep lamenting our lack of pace, X factor and poor defence am but then keep re-signing the same players with these issues
Agree. I think I've seen Toa have about 1 good game and that when we pumped NQ by about 60 pts a few years ago. Other than that, I don't think he'd play 1st grade for anyone else. He can beat it with Twal. Both are ineffective in their positions. (Spare me Twals stats too, he's a work horse but that hasn't helped us win).

Caves Beach (next to Swansea).
From the Transport for NSW website:

"You'll see warning signs coming up to and after mobile speed cameras as well as a sign on top of the mobile speed camera vehicle, when they're in operation, so you know your speed is being checked."

They also have a locations list on there of where you can expect them. In relation to your earlier query about them being lit up at night, I highly doubt that that would be a requirement as they don't light up normal speed limit signs either.

Who would you like to be assistants?

I would have liked to have seen Shane Sultana promoted as an assistant coach.
Imo he excelled with a mediocre Balmain S G Ball side to punch above their weight.
Was recognised by WT and replaced the Jersey Flegg coach mid season, and is the current coach. They have improved immensely. Players picked on form in their preferred positions and coached accordingly.
IMO he recognises emerging talent, where they best fit in a team, gives them a job to do and they respond [sounds like Bellamy?]
But he is leaving..............going back to a Souths Sydney School to teach them how to play.
A WT missed opportunity to get an under the radar, emerging, top coach IMO.
he’s doing both Shane isn’t going anywhere

I know Richo doesn’t want to let on who they are chasing, but for us fans it’s painful , we read that 5 teams chasing mooney from the raiders , and quess what WE aren’t one of them , hope we sneak in order the radar,

Finally you get that the lousy grant from HBG is'nt the major problem - our revenue from all aspects is below par - playing at Leichhardt and Campbelltown hits the corporate revenue, because we are coming off 3 wooden spoons memberships are appalling compared to most other clubs, we are way behind on corporate sponsorships. It would be nice if HBG at least doubled their amount but there are certainly a lot of other areas that are now the responsibility of WT not HBG to improve financially.
