Aidan Sezer #279

Agree that the deadline was stupid but the offer for Brooks was market value. We couldn't be forced to overpay for him again especially after his 1.1 million dollar salary for this season. His manager got him more money & a longer deal at Manly so good luck to him. He will go well playing alongside DCE but he doesn't have many years left... two max so Manly's long term halves pairing will be who Schuster & Brooks? Arthur & Brooks? By poaching Fainu off them i'd say Manly taking Brooks who seems to be suffering a lot of leg injuries lately & us getting Fainu who was the hottest halves prospect in the market is a massive W for WT's.

Fainu & Sullivan wouldn't be a really good halves pairing, Fainu has never played NRL before & Sullivan hasn't even played 50 games thrusting them together would be asking for trouble. Galvin is also still a kid who is only still in high school so having Fainu, Sullivan, Galvin & an injured Adam Doueihi as your halves for 2024 would just be a disaster waiting to happen.
agree but if sezer does play in 2024 then how much experience will a fainu get probably not much and 2025 we are in the same position with inexperienced halves. I would have like to see the club roll the dice in 2024 we are probably not making semis anyway.
One thing we are fortunate on is Fulton not getting his way with Schuster and we made manly pay overs for him.

so you keep wakeham for a year on minimum and back Sullivan fainu Galvin or they shoukd have kept Laurie for utility value. Doubt we keep Mason he will be heading elsewhere
I would keep Wakeham on NSW cup contract but cannot run with Fainu, Sullivan & Galvin without an experienced half like Sezer. As much as a guy like Cronk would assist OFF the field, they need this leadership on the field IMO. Hey if these young guys kill it and Sezer is not needed for 2025 then his done his job.

We all just want to win but experience tells us you need experience to do this.

I'm not excited about the Sezer signing at all and would be shocked if he performs well next year. But I tend to agree with all the no one else out there/short term cheap contract/experienced option/need depth takes so not upset with the signing either.
I think the collect of halves is better than this year, though I also think Brooks is (currently) better than any of the 3 halves signed. But he's going so bring on the new blokes.
I also think Sullivan is a 7 and hope he is starting there next year. Let Sezer take a back seat at 6 and take over shot calling in game if/when required.

You sound like the coaches of the last decade... playing 6s at 7s or vice versa.

All wrong, imo.

Sezar, locked in at 7🔒

Sezar might go round another season.

... he's here to mentor Bud and Fainu and instil some knowledge upon them, show them the way.

Win/win.
Agreed, but IF Sullivan is seen as the future 7 why have him spend a season at 6 just watching on? Surely, he would have learnt more observing Hunt than he will Sezer.
If Sullivan is not the future 7, who is? Is it Fainu? isnt he more of a 6 than Sullivan? And if neither than why the long-term contract for both?
It is only win/win if Sezer actually plays well, and he is actually the right personality and playing type to act as mentor. It is not a role any experienced player can perform. I have serious doubts about both. As i said originally not upset with his signing but will take some convincing that it will prove fruitful.

It will be OK.

No rush.
We obviously didn't want to go into the season with 2 young halves and wanted an older calm head to steet the ship.

There's a clear plan here.

Man good observation.

Yet I think Hunt and Sezer are very different players. What I would hope is that Sullivan can take from Hunt what Wayne Bennett and Griffin have imparted too him.

What Sullivan can take from Sezer is what Ricky Stuart will have trained in him.

2 very different coaches and streams. Good to see if such learning can become a part of our club.

I am still not sold on Sezer, kinda questioning why ... Did Sezer really play that much halfback at Canberra?
So hoping Sezer will vacate the 7 for Sullivan sooner then later.

Something bothering me with Sezer and it's this:

Gold Coast, most years Sezer was 5/8. I can't even remember him playing halfback.
Canberra, spent a stack of time in reggie's. Eventually becoming halfback to Sam Williams detriment.

Have we hired a 5/8 or a halfback?

We have hired an organiser which is something we had in 2022 (Hastings) till the coach decided we didn't need him during our off season.i am not expecting any excitement from Sezer at all but hopefully the guidance he will hopefully deliver will be invaluable in giving us shape on the field and helping to train our younger halves.
He is relatively cheap as far as halves go and should be an upgrade on where we have been this year

I think this is a good signing all things considered.
But would like someone smarter than me to clarify the plan; Bud Sullivan to start at 7 with Sezer at 6, and the intent would be bring Latu in to the 6 role when ready? i.e. Sullivan viewed as a halfback and Fianu viewed as a 6?
