Alex Twal #206

Twal is about half of our entire defensive effort.

Seasons dead. We need to focus on defence for the rest of the season.

I'd love to see him get an offload away - apparently was quite adept in a previous life.

Maybe ...maybe ....play Liddle off the bench .....move Simpkin to lock ...rotate the both out of dummy half in attack

There can be many differences as some hi lighted.
The lock in a traditional game/team is your clean up man. Work tirelessly to plug the gaps in the defensive line (these days the fullback does) this.
As far as attack goes, a lock would never take the first 2 hit ups of a set. They are not the player to bundle and get the opposition on the Backfoot they are the main person who capitalises off that, continues that. Problem with us has been Twal has been asked to take dirty hit ups at lock, a lot like Tolman did and now Jackson does at the dogs. A lot like Finucane does at the Storm. It works for them ‘the Storm’ because of the amount of strike they can go to at any stage in the set. Even though it appears Melbourne are moving away from a traditional 3rd prop that plays 80 (I realise that Kamikamika and Solamona play that role in the starting 13) but Brendan Smith comes back on and does the real damage.
Souths have used Murray and Victor as their key attacking players for over a number of years now and even the Titans and Newcastle have made a gradual shift to the smaller, ball playing lock. But the common factor in those sides is there 10-8,11 and 12 are really solid defenders.
Based on our lack of strong defenders in Garner, Lucy and Joffa I can only envision that Twal will be still doing a similar role, just in a smaller channel, with a more intensive output over a shorter period of time.
Jury’s out.

I would be willing to try something like that - should I call Madge or can you do it?

What’s the difference between a lock and prop anyway?

lock should ball play these days don't think that is twals go

It depends if you want to give your halves more space OR if you need more defence in the middle. There are different types of lock that fill different gaps in the team.

I think the game has moved away from the third prop type of lock.

yup - it's now like touch football. You don't need defence in the middle

Was absolutely superb last night, had worries with Twal the last 18 months as imo he has been poor and hasn’t hit those levels he had during the Cleary era as he barely ran the ball and lacked much impact.

However, you can tell he wants to make more of an impact attacking wise and looked really hungry for the ball which we’ve never really seen from him and he carved there forwards up with the metres he was making! Really inspiring game from him, played like our forward leader and seems like he’s developing his game to the player we all know he can be!

Liking what I saw, could play himself into an origin squad if he can continue to contribute to his attack game and not rely solely on his defence....

Inspired is the word.
Took it upon himself to lead the pigs forward last night, punched the ball up, made yards after contact and found his front.
Our starting pack as a whole have been performing the past few weeks and they all did a job last night.

Was the best foward on ground last night,as he has been multiple times this season.
His running has improved greatly while still being our best and most consistent defender.
Good stuff Alex, any team would love to have him.

Ive noticed him lift the last 3 or so games. Looking a really good forward now. Smashed it last night. they could barely stop him......I must admit at times Ive wondered if he was gonna shine but I'm sure now this kid is legit!!

Was real good . Runs straight and great post contact metres. Took three players to stop him every hit up.

HIs post contact metres last night were insane. he was dragging multiple defenders for miles every hit up!!

Throw me a gold star or a thumbs up because I was the one saying we should sign Twal when he was at Parramatta u20s

Recruitment King 🐯👑
