Not having a go at Twal at all but tackle efficiency stats can be a little misleading sometimes..

Might be wrong but if you don't attempt a tackle or don't even put a hand on them, it doesn't count as a missed tackle. There have been plenty of times where attackers have walked through the line without being touched.

We all know Brooks is an excellent defender but usually leads the missed tackle stats.. usually not at all his fault.

Twal though is definitely a keeper.

If you don’t put a hand on a player and they ran through your gap then it’s counted as a missed tackle, even if you didn’t attempt a tackle. You are right however that stats can be misleading. This is the case with Twal. Despite him having the best tackle efficiency (ie the ratio of missed tackles to tackles) he in fact has the most number of ineffective tackles out of all our props (ie attempted tackles where the attacking player offloads the ball).

In saying that, we have to remember that he plays more minutes so you should look at the above stats as a proportion of total tackle involvements. When you do the conversion we find that 3.5% of his tackles result in an offload. This is also the worst result amongst all Tigers props.

Could it be fatigue from long minutes? Although this doesn’t stop him from missing tackles. Does he not hit hard enough? Too many one-on-one tackles? Not great at wrapping up the ball?

Stats don’t always tell the full story.

I watched Victor Radley play last week and that guy tackled himself to a standstill. He has a very good running and passing game as well, which adds so much to your attacking play. I appreciate that Twal also does a lot of tackles, but he lacks the running and passing game.

Look I like his commitment and his drive, but if u watch his game closely u can see his floors. His line speed in defence is horrible, while he rarely misses a tackle he often just stands there in the line waiting for the runners to come to him.

Most of the team does this - they do drills prior to the game with cones set 5 metres apart. They run up 5 metres together in a line, stop, then slide to the side.

Unfortunately they continue to stop at this invisible 5 metre mark during the game too, even if the ball carrier/support players haven't reached them yet.

Coaching issue and a lack of game awareness IMHO. Hopefully this is sorted out in the review/off-season.

This causes a massive role on for the opposition, and gets us on the backfoot often causing try’s!
It frustrates the hell out of me. Also if he learnt to pass that would be great. The opposition likes twal as they can easily hold him up and get their Line defence in order. I am also sick of him used a settler on the 4th tackle in good attacking positions. But I think that comes down to horrible coaching.

Seriously he is a tackling machine. We need a couple more like him in defence.

Seriously mike, watch his games, often just stands there in the line waiting for the opposition to run at him. Like a statue! Yes, he doesn’t miss them. But let’s the roll on by just standing there. Statistics in all parts of life are misleading. Great tackle rate, but line speed poor.

He's a prop. Best suited to coming off the bench and then not being interchanged. He's solid, that's it. He needs more aggression, more skill, more agility. He's a better version of Eisenhuth, but far from a star

I’d be pretty wrapped if the team managed to stop a runner after only running 5 meters.

I’d be pretty wrapped if the team managed to stop a runner after only running 5 meters.

It would mean we finally have some line speed and / or our marker defence was effective ........God ...we could only pray for that to occur .....please

Yep. He has the best tackle “efficiency” stats (ie he doesn’t miss many tackles). But his tackle “effectiveness” stats are the lowest amongst our props (ie he allows opposition players to offload the ball more often than any of our props).

Good player does his job, one dimensional. Nothing special. Has he scored a try yet? Seen him offload once.

I missed that offload .. he’s holding us back.
Runs a straight line similar to Martin Lang - boring and predictable, let’s take out the trash.
