Balmain & Western Suburbs Junior Rep Teams 2011

For anyone who is interested Balmain SG will be playing a trial on Friday (21st) against Balmain 17's development squad, believe its at TG Milner time TBA.
It's a good opportunity for some of those in the 17's squad to impress and there are some very good players in the development squad, I assume the SG Ball squad will be finalised after this game in preperation to take on the doggies in the frist official trial.

_**Wests SG ball will have a terrific backline this year with most of last years team backing up again unfortunately with Sonny now gone and Jake Townsend struggling with his return after a broken leg in 2009 the forwards just don't look strong this year.**_

I hear the forwards will be the heart and soul of the side…....its funny how complete opposite stories get circulated...lol....I' guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

Great to hear..good stuff…I hope they are... backs can't do their stuff without good forwards...I will be pleasantly surprised.

Is the coach close to finalising the team or is he waiting till after they play their first trial in a couple of weeks ?

Thanks for the trial details flash.

Blackandwhite, I dont know exactly where he's at, but from what I saw at training last week there were only about 25 - 28 boys(lost count with them moving….lol) so must be close.....I might add there was one there that was really struggling to keep up with the fitness drills the conditioner was putting them through....so that could be one that'll be gone shortly??

I was just told the Junior Rep Magpies are playing a trial against Manly on Saturday 5th Feb at something called Jack Nash Reserve in Mt Annan…that can't seriously be true..that field isn't even full size..Isn't there a cricket pitch there somewhere as well ?

How lucky are you Flash you play at TG Millner and we play on a cow paddock.

I am getting the feeling we won't be playing at Campbelltown stadium again this year.

Last year the trials were on the top field at TG Milner, we played Souths with them running down hill for 2 of the 3 thirds. They killed us, that ground isn't the best either.

Well at least you get 1 game at Leichhardt. Don't know why you guys don't play some games at Concord if its available, put some pressure on Warren. I know you played Canberra there last year.

Balmain SG Ball defated the 17's development squad by 7 tries to 1 last night. It wasn't a bad trial for the Tigers with both teams defending well in a quality hit out. Around 12 of the top squad sat out this game and as was said after the game we have got some great depth this year considering it was our 2nds taking on our 3rds.
It allowed coach Balin Cupples to trim his squad in preperation for the Bulldogs this Friday night, there were a few disappointed boys who performed well but missed on the squad mainly because they are the younger age group. Don't get too disappointed boys, most of the top performers from both teams were the younger boys and it was their age rather than their performance that influenced selections.

I have been reading this site as a guest for a long time and thought it about time I became a member, to join in the banter.

Have had a look at the comments about the Balmain SG Ball v 17s Development game and it seems like it was a great match.

Thought I would throw it out there and ask anyone who went to the game, if any of the 17s boys put there hands up to be counted during the match. Any surprises????

Hey Flash did they all back up for a training session at Concord this morning or just the ones that didn't play?

Big ask for those that played last night if they did, 3 hour session!!!!

There were a couple of the 17's who played well, the SG Squad cut 5 players last night and still have a few more to cut. It would be very difficult to make the SG squad from the 17's development though.

Yes 3 of the boys who played last night backed up for the session this morning.

Great to see Tim Sheens, Grant Jones and Todd Payten there putting the boys through some great drills to help progress their skills. I don't think any other club in the NRL do this with their up and coming talent. There ended up being 3 sessions for the boys over the last month or so, all of the halves, hookers, 5/8's and fullbacks from Wests and Balmain's junior rep teams attended.

Great stuff Wests Tigers.

Thats great work from the Tigers. Looks like they are leading the way with that sort of training support for the junior reps.

I have a good feeling about the our Tigers moving forward, I would say the Tigers will be well served by their juniors with these sorts of programs, including the Tiger Cubs program that they run.

Seems they are really concentrating on the important positons of 1, 6, 7, 9 which is smart and they are pretty well served in those areas. :sign:

Spoke to my mate Watto on Monday as he was at Fridays trial and he said, the 1, 3, 11 were the best for the Golds during Friday nights trial and the 7 and the 13 were standouts for the black 17s.

Balmain Junior Reps First Official trial v Mutts

This Friday Night our Junior Rep teams take on the Bulldogs at Terry Lamb Reserve.

The action begins at 5pm.

5.00pm - u/17s Development Match - Tigers v Bulldogs

6.00pm - u/16s Harold Matthews Trial - Tigers v Bulldogs

7.30pm - u/18s S.G.Ball Trial - Tigers v Bulldogs

See you at the game.

17's lost around 6-2
Matts lost by about the same.
SG Ball lost 10-4

It was a good trial for the Ball considering the Doggies are the favourites, this was also our first trial and was the 4th for the Dogs. It was difficult to get into the game with the ref having one blue eye and one white eye, every drop ball by them was a strip and we were penalised in the play the ball several times for ??.

We actually won the final 3rd 2-1 with an even share of possession, a lot of work needs to be done over the next 3 weeks if we are going to have any chance against Parra in round 1.

Went to the SB Ball game at Terry Lamb complex tonight and found a bulldogs side far too slick for the Tigers on the night.

Too quick around the ruck with easy yards up the middle, support play was excellent and the tigers failed to slow down the play after the tackle was made. They are a very good side that the bulldogs have put together. There will be heaps for improvement in the Tigers though, and I think everyone can expect an excellent year from the Tigs.

Looks like the dogs may have finalised their playing group but the Tigers still look unsure of some starting positions halves, fullback, hooker and backrow. Any info on who the dogs and tigers play next week???

Balmain v Souths SG Ball trial ended up in a 28 all draw yesterday.
Balmain dominated the first half when they had their top side on leading by 6 tries 2\. Shane Beale at centre was outstanding setting up the majority of the Tigers tries, Mania Cherrington at hooker also played well.
The second half was a different story with some poor defence and uncreative attack from the Tigers, Souths to their credit came back well scoring 5 tries to 1\. Souths have settled on their top squad and pretty much kept the same side for the whole game while the Tigers had 2 teams and are still juggling their squad around.

Balmain Tigers 28 (Daniel Rakvin, Jake Waugh, Jack Madden, Manaia Cherrington, Braeden Batiste, Alex Vlahos, Nicholas Paul tries)
South Sydney 28 (Christian Hazard 2, Tyrone Phillips, Aaron O’Brien, Zach Walsh, Curtley Caldwell, Luke Pollard tries)

Too hot for me to go out on Saturday weather was terrible, but by all accounts Tigers showed some real glimpses of great play with some long range tries. Fair bit of improvement left in the Tigers yet, once they finalise their side they could figure pretty heavily in the finals, with a bit of luck going their way.

Anyone know how the Matts went ?? Did they play in that heat? I do know from a contact at the Dogs that they had a really tough game against the Tigers 17s Development Squad on the south coast. He said the 10 was best in the forwards and the 7 was a standout on the day amongst a heap of good performers for the Tigers.

Looks like Balmain are well served in all grades. Who's on the Tigers hit list next week?
