Benji Marshall #70

Great player of his time and I respect what he did for our club.

I however don’t want his involvement in the future of our club once he retires.
Whilst I accept you are a long time retired and it is his job, he is now at his fourth NRL side and I believe it has tarnished his legacy to start and finish at a club he said he would never play against.

I will find it hard to follow him in a Souths jersey even with the fond memories of his past with us.

I think Benji sealed his fate when he did that dopey kick in the final moments of the second round match against the Souths.

That pretty much summed up his rocks or diamonds career. If I recall correctly he murdered a 4 on 2 scenario and opted for the low percentage play.

You couldn't teach that stuff. I have no idea why he was not hired as a coach.

If you actually watch him analyse plays, he is actually very good at breaking down plays. There is definitely a role for him in the media or a club in that sort of role.

I would almost guarantee that he will be back at the club in some role in the future. He is going to have a role in the media and the way you get positive messages from past players is to have them employed by the club in some function.

Getting Robbie, Benji and even lawrance involved around the club will mean when the media calls them for a quote is much more likely to be a positive message.

The guys great .

But i kind of agree with the rocks and diamonds comments. He goes for the spectacular, but i dont think he does that for the sake of it. Its just been his gameplay his whole career, he does the freakish, he needs to be freakish thats his whole moveset.

This entire thread sucks, I love the guy, I’m happy with the WT decision to not keep him on board it was time, just wish he had a good ending with us. This wasn’t ideal for over a decade for rooting for the bloke.

Sorry edit: When i said the thread sucks i didnt mean any comments, just the fact we’re all in this situation

Very glad he is gone.

Terrible defensively...and dominated the attacking structure to the detriment of everyone else last season. The 20% gold / 80% crap ratio simply does no one any favors and is why his own success rate of making the finals was horrendously low.

For an "elite half"...he failed to carry a team to the finals finals for the past decade (when halves are supposed to peak).

His best years were when Brisbane and Saints gave him clear roles and he did not overplay his hand all game.

With us, his ego was never checked and he did whatever he wanted most of the time.

He will likely be okay for Souths...he will have a clear role as the back up half / cover origin / third-fourth choice ballplayer when on.

He will accept that with them...and accept it from Bennet...

He never did with us...and had to go.

Benji is entitled to forge his own path just like we have, without taking him down for it. Clubs are ruthless these days and players have learned to look after their own best interests. Thank God for his ego because it probably encouraged a skinny kid to produce some of the most enjoyable moments I've had as supporter of the WTs. Won't be cheering for him this year but will be watching with interest and without prejudice.

Wasn't it 2nd tackle or something? Is that the one?

Yeah, not sure of exactly which tackle it was but they had a few up their sleeve and he destroyed that game. Of course, it wasn't his fault. :joy: :hankey:

Fairly sure it was either 2nd or 3rd, either way my television was lucky to survive.

Just went back to the live game thread. It was 2nd tackle and we had 3 minutes on the clock so time wasn't a factor. It was just a low percentage brain fart.

LOL ...did Benji sign for Souths ......

Benjamin Bunny!

Maybe I'm wrong ..but in my opinion he is destroying his legacy now

I think you're right. More than that though, I think it confirms how big his ego is and how driven he is to feed that ego. I wish him no harm, but I'll be a neutral observer, at best.

When they play us:
I hope he plays well
I hope we smash him into next week
I hope we flog them
He is now not one of us

Hopefully he plays first grade against us.It would be good to exploit his terrible defence the same way it has been exploited against us the last 2 years
