Benji Marshall #70

It’s now time to come home, Benji.

On the day Benji Marshall announced his retirement from rugby league, Wests Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis revealed plans to lure the club legend back to Concord.

And Marshall may return directly onto the Wests Tigers coaching staff and reunite with the club’s two other favourite sons – Robbie Farah and Tim Sheens.

Marshall, 36, retired on Wednesday, his final game being for South Sydney in Sunday’s grand final loss to Penrith.

The Daily Telegraph has learned a selfless Marshall decided to retire several weeks ago but wanted his decision kept secret to avoid a media frenzy during Souths’ premiership bid.

While he also played for Brisbane, St George Illawarra and South Sydney in rugby league – and Auckland Blues in rugby union – Marshall has always considered him a Wests Tiger.

He had two stints at Concord, playing a total of 257 NRL games including victory in the 2005 grand final.

He wants to coach and would ultimately aim to coach at Wests Tigers, the club he cherishes. Although unlikely, Marshall could even be fast tracked and considered for the Wests Tigers assistant coaching position vacated on Monday by Shane Millard.

“He would be an incredible ambassador, mentor and coach of sorts,” Hagipantelis said. “In what capacity I do not know, these are discussions that would have to be held with the football department.

“Benji is such a unique individual and is so experienced, he would be able to coach these young players as to what is involved in being a successful NRL player. That level of experience cannot be bought.

“I’d be more than happy to sit down with him and discuss what opportunities are available within our organisation.

“Benji would be welcomed back with open arms to the Wests Tigers in some capacity. He is a 2005 brother and premiership winner so we would warmly welcome him back.

“He has roamed far and wide but Wests Tigers is his spiritual home but they always come back home.

“His association with Wests Tigers goes back many, many years and it’s an association which could never be compromised in any way, no matter what has occurred in the meantime.”

Marshall has a new two-year contract with Fox Sports but would have the time to commit to a coaching gig at Wests Tigers.

Bringing Marshall back would continue a club trend of having former players return after retirement.

Farah and former winger Pat Richards are coaching consultants while utility Chris Lawrence is employed in the club’s player wellbeing department with ex prop John Skandalis in corporate sales.

And with Sheens to start shortly as director of coaching, the trio which masterminded Wests Tigers’ famous ’05 grand final win may soon be back together again.

In his retirement speech, Marshall said: “I’d like to make extra mention of Wests Tigers, where I’m a life member. I spent the majority of my rugby league life playing for Wests Tigers. I won a competition in 2005 with them, something I will never forget.

“I’d like to make special mention of Tim Sheens. He really helped me come through and become the player that I am today. His mentorship, his coaching, his encouragement of me to be able to use my skills is second-to-none.

“I will get through today first and assess what is next from there on. I really just want to enjoy this moment, especially with my family, I suppose you could say celebrate what I have been able to achieve in my career.”

I'd love to see him in some role at Wests next year. He can build his coaching skills over time. What he would bring is the connection to younger players. As well, having him and Farah at the club - how could you not feel the passion, desire to be the best you can and love for the club. This is what our club desperately needs. Add these two to the return of Tim Sheens and you start to build a sense of belief and identity for this club. Love the bloke.

I could be wrong, but didn't Benji spend lots of his injury time with Sheens in the coaches box? I seem to recall an article or quotes by Sheens about how his read of the game (from that position, obvs different on the field) was impressive.

I think the artic;e is actually on the nail here:
"Although unlikely, Marshall could even be fast tracked and considered for the Wests Tigers assistant coaching position vacated on Monday by Shane Millard."
It's unlikely and close to improbable sure, but having benji around in some aspect brings money, fans and possibily even players.

I'm all for it, I'm a huge huge Benji fan, but not assistant coach off the bat, that needs a bit of time. In some capacity yes, he will generate alot of $ some way or another.

Wise decision to bring Benji back for many reasons. He and Farah would bridge a gap between Madge being hard lined and also help key positions hooker, halves. Wouldn’t hurt with recruiting if he’s on the coaching staff in some capacity.

Having our two best and most influential WT players on the coaching staff any any capacity can only be a good thing...as long as they keep the dinosaurs like Blocker as far away as possible.

Thoughts?

Quite possible. He's a public favourite across the fans of all teams and even casual watchers of the game. No doubt created supporters. One of the most recognisable. Once of the most saleable. Changed playing styles of up and comers. Put touch football flair into rugby league. Will be remembered as the greatest Polynesian player. Did things - regularly - that others have never been able to replicate even now. Two Grand Finals with one win. Played in the legit world champion Kiwi team. International player of the year...

So I guess it will depend on how they want to judge his criteria.

Let him run the water bottle with Farah.

He’ll have to get inline. There’s a long list of decorated players in front of him. (Unless for political/marketing reasons they want to name the first Kiwi immortal.)

Our best ever player without a doubt! Having Benji back in an assistant coaching or similar capacity might also, having regard to the enormous respect he enjoys across the NRL, even help us attract some of the good young players we will need to build the club back into a real force in the NRL.

How would behind go with madge?

Widely reporting Beijing was furious about not being extended at WT last year and I think he blamed it on madge

Also notice how the leaking from players seems to have stopped since benji left.

I think it would be great to have him back at WT but only if he supports the coach and pulls in the same direction

I'm sure it has always been on the cards to bring him back in some capacity. The same olive leaf was offered to Farah.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he follows Bennett and helps him out. Maybe the Sheens factor could heal wounds but the man can hold a grudge.

Wasn't Marshall and Farah behind Sheens quote ''Players get rid of Coaches' in 2012..?

You can't write this stuff..Irony and not the Alannis Morriset kind..

Wests Tigers destroy the Robbie and Benji Coaching duo..before it even starts..lol

I doubt if Benji would be a good coach because everything that he did on the field seemed to be a spur of the moment decision. He always had trouble playing within a structure and this was always both his greatest strength and biggest weakness.

There’s this great misconception that great players will automatically make great coaches. That’s almost never the case. The two best coaches in the game were average players. Robinson and Bellamy.

Benji couldn't teach what he did ..it was mainly instinctive and lacked patience .....wasn't real good at getting 3 or 4 repeat sets in a row ......

Benji won't return to a coaching role at WT until Madge is gone. Lee's in fairyland.

Then again surely Sheens knows the 2 biggest instigators in him getting the boot were Farah and Marshall .....

Didn't need to, he would either score a solo try or try assist from 40m +!
