Benji Admits Form Slump
7 May, 2013 by Sportal

Out-of-sorts Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall has revealed he's 'gone back to the drawing board' in a bid to bust out of his worrying form slump in Friday's must-win clash against Cronulla.

The Kiwi international admits he's been well below his best in six games for the last-placed Tigers this season.

He missed two matches with a toe injury and was clearly still troubled by the torn ligament in his big toe in his return match against Canterbury last week.

But the 28-year-old, who is expected to sign a lucrative contract extension in the coming days, says his toe is not to blame for his lacklustre start to 2013.

"Even before the injury I wasn't happy with where I was at," Marshall said.

"My major job in the team is to provide attack and provide direction for the team and I think that's one of my strengths, but this year it just hasn't happened."

"I didn't really know what to put it down to so I went back to the drawing board this week, had a chat to the coach and I think my strength's my running game and I just haven't been doing that.

**"So I'm going to go back to just being myself and relax and just get back to running the ball."**
Pressed on the reason for the demise of his famous running game, Marshall replied: "I think when you actually become a ball player over time you get into a habit where start believing you're a ball player more than a runner and I feel that's sort of happened a bit, so I want to go back to being a runner first and then ball-play after that.

"Instead of worrying about putting everyone else over I want to start scoring some tries."

Marshall added when asked if his toe, which he injured in Round 5 against Melbourne, is still bothering him: "It's the weirdest injury out. The major ligament in the big toe is just torn … there's also a bone in there that I've torn off with the ligament but that's healed now.

"There's just a bit of residual soreness around the toe and the way they strap it sort of restricts the amount of spring you have in your toe and I've also got these special orthotics which stop you from flexing your toe, so it's a bit awkward but that's what I have to do to play."

Meanwhile, Marshall concedes facing former team-mates and close friends Beau Ryan and Chris Heighington for the first time on Friday night will feel strange.

"To be honest it's going to be awkward, I haven't played against either of them before," he said.

"Beau rang me up earlier in the week and told me he's going to take my head off so I said, 'ok, good luck'.

"It'll be alright, obviously it was a big loss for the team losing a few of those boys but we've got jobs to do for our team-mates and for me it's not about what they do, it's about what I do."

We can only hope he truly means it and this "back to the drawing board" correlates to on field performance. He needs to play as selfish as possible (within reason) to get back to form.

Cant wait to see him start running the ball on Friday.

I guess he has nailed the reason for his demise, he is trying to put other people over the line.
Its so much better when he backs himself and does that shimmy, hop, step as Gus called it.

I really hope he finds form soon. It appears he is saying everything we want hear. Lets just hope he can deliver and do it consistently week in week out.
There's a lot of hate out there for benji right now and I've been one of them, but it's warranted and it appears he knows it.

So prove us all wrong bro. We all want you to.

Yawn….got halfway thru

weve heard it all before

talk is cheap

wouldn't be the first time he proves the doubters dead wrong.

let's hope he can do it again :sign:

he wants to be him and relax a bit more.. that's hillarious.. has somebody been telling him that he works too hard on his defense, error count etc.?

Im as sick of these Benji articles as the next fan. But this one actually hits the nail on the head. If he is actually going to concentrate on his running game then only good can come of it.

Exactly what i thought….didnt bother reading it all. He has said this so many tines about running the ball and he does it for one week then goes back to not running.

…until the next form slump

true…but he's on the books till 2015 sooo gotta make do till then and hope he comes good. Better he is in form some of the time rather than none.

But this time he means it ….. He does he does .......he does really mean it. To much talk.Time to turn the talk into action. No more articles please Benji. I much prefer read articles and headlines written about you ... About you killing it on the field. You know the ones!!!

He's got a lot of things to work on, but the one thing that i think is an "easy win" for him would be to learn how to put up a bomb for his outside backs. How a 28 year old 5/8 who has captained his country, & won a world cup, premiership, & golden boot award, can still consistently put up bombs that go sideways, over the sideline, or even backwards, is beyond belief.

This probably applies to all the kickers in our team over the last few years, including farah and moltzen, but as our main attacking kicker benji needs to take ownership of this

He can try and run the ball all he wants, but we need to get him into reasonable field position and with some space first.

Watching the Tigers spread the ball in their backline plays this year has been painful. Balls are being passed behind players and there haven't been players in motion running good lines - just too slow and cumbersome to worry decent defensive sides. Not to mention that the players on his outside haven't been explosive so aren't drawing defenders in. Hopefully the forwards can muscle up and the team stops giving away so many penalties, then he might stand a better chance.

Simona was only on for a short period last week, but I think he showed some promising footwork. Hopefully that translates to something more this week. I think our attack needs to be focused down Simona and Koro's side of the field, after some direct and hard running down the middle third for the first 4 tackles.

Its not surprising when you look at his technique. His bodyweight and centre of gravity is all wrong. He's kicking off balance far too often and has been doing it for years.

I agree, but as Ink also mentions, we've heard this before. If Benji can rediscover his running game, then hopefully the rest of our attack will slowly follow. We've certainly looked the most pedestrian team in attack this year so something needs to change ASAP if we're to trouble the opposition defence.
