"Benny is the bloke everyone wants to hit."

BENNY Elias, they say, has a bounty on his head. At least three figures following the dollar sign, too.

"But I'd expect nothing less from Queenslanders," the NSW Origin great grins.

"Every time we play one of these Legends games they say 'oh, it's all softly, softly' … then they try to rip your head off."

Let's call this the charity game without any, then.

Some 38 Origin greats converging on Parramatta Stadium tonight to sign autographs, wobble pot bellies and think only of fundraising for Queensland flood victims.

Yeah, right.

Does anyone honestly expect a firebrand like Gorden Tallis to own a go-easy switch? Or Spud Carroll? The retired Rabbitoh whose answering machine still kicks off with, "Sorry, but I'm real busy trainin' at the moment ... ".

According to mountain legend, Carroll was invited to play one of these charity games in the Jindabyne snow a few years back. So Spud played, got sledged ... within a few minutes turning the white powder red.

Then there's Andrew Farrar, the 1980s Kangaroo who signed on for a Legends tour of Great Britain thinking laughs, Tower of London tours and pints aplenty. By day two, however, the Poms had snapped his leg.

And who could forget the old boy efforts of Mark "Sparkles" McGaw? The former Sharkie and Gladiators star who acted out his Hammer nickname on Mal Meninga's bonce in 2001.

"People always talk about treading a fine line in these games - but where's the fine line for blokes like Mark Geyer or Spud?" Elias laughs.

"Plus we know the Queenslanders will come out with backline moves and all the f ... en infrastructure. Come kick-off I guarantee Billy Moore is in the sheds screaming Queens-lan-dah."

So is this how Queensland FOGS really roll?

"Oh, who said that?" Tallis fires. "Benny Elias ... I bet it was Benny bloody Elias."

Um, yep.

"OK, listen, when it comes to these games, Benny is the bloke everyone wants to hit.

"Everyone.

"Already this week I've had a heap of people offering me money just to whack him. And between you and me, more than two of them were your Origin greats."

All of which makes us ask the question - why? Why would blokes with little cartilage and less to prove risk injury, embarrassment and three long months in traction?

Tallis, remember, was forced into early retirement by nothing less than a bung neck.

"It's true I never play in these things - ever," the Queensland hero concedes.

"But how do you say no to this?

"Even with all the flood footage you've seen on TV, it doesn't do justice to the devastation. To the suffering. So I'm playing for those people, nothing else."

But c'mon Gordie, what if some bastard in Blue whacks you under the rib cage?

"Ahhhh . . . I guess then we might get into it a little."

Tallis wouldn't even try a cheap shot on Benny if Block or Sirro were also out there!!

He'd KO the 3 of them!!

Did you ever see Blocker play flash????

Tallis & Ross shows you how little Tallis actually had - Ross remained standing mate!!

Block was a genuine one-punch knock-out merchant - just ask Bobby Lindner & John Cartwright!!!

And Sirro goes good too (ask MG & Spud)!!!

He is ten years younger though - and would easily beat them for speed!

Its a little sad that as a kid I loved Benny, without the internet and the fact I was in primary school when he played, meant I never knew just how much of a wanker he really was. It sort of ruins my image I had of him as a kid.

Like throwing that pass to mario at his knees only a few minutes into the game when we were coming off our own tryline…nobodies laughing champ.

Love his passion and ability though.

Come on Flash - tell me I am wrong!!!!

**Your** Wrong

As regards the english language - you are wrong flash!!!

It is either "you are" or "you're"!!!

As for Tallis beating either Sirro or Block at each other's peak - you are fricking kidding!!!!

Sironen's rep career destroys Tallis - he played 24 Tests & 14 Origins in a really competitive era - & Tallis got 16 Tests (including 3 for SL when even Sol Haumono made the team) - and 17 Origins when Qld were losing!!!!!

Tallis' winning percentage in his 17 Origins is 29.5%!!!! Pathetic!!!!

Sirro's is 57% & he played against the likes of Lewis & Meninga! Blocker's is 52% from his 17 games - and he played 19 Tests compared to Tallis' 13 + 3 SL-nonsense games!!

Blocker would also kill both in a fight in his prime!!!

Did you answer my question whether you had seen the Balmain boys at their peak??? The answer is no!!!!

Stick to junior league which is more your pace!!!

woah! relax dude! he was talking about now. not when they were at their peak.

What makes you now decide Benny is a wanker???

I'd have a beer with Benny - (as I have in the past) before I'd sit down with that mutt Mario!!

A wanker is an appropriate term for Mario - a bloke nicknamed "Test Match" who never played one - who left his allegedly beloved Souths as captain for greener pastures over the bridge - played his best footy at prop but still considers himself a former-hooker - and who only re-discovered his inner-Rabbitoh after being wined & dined by Russell Crowe!!

And he is a deadset moron - unlike Benny who bathes in his self made millions!!!

Redemption, I am talking about now and not about their rep careers. That is what this blog is about isn't it, pretty obvious when you start questioning my grammar and start bringing out every fact you that you could find that you even know I am right.
As for watching Balmain at their peak, I was born in Balmain, played for Balmain and as a kid went to every Balmain game, my son now plays for Balmain even though I now live out of the district. At least I can see past Balmain and give an honest opinion on what goes on in the world unlike yourself.

Tallis' legend is a media creation that you bought into!

What sort of Origin Legend has a winning ratio under 30%??

That is the truth - just because he man-handled little Hodgo does not make him tough!! Sirro & Blocker would still give it to him in a confined space (despite being 10-15 years older than him)!!

You are the one who started slagging off two Balmain legends by saying a mutt like Tallis would knock them both out - and you had nothing to back it up with!!

Tallis never knocked out a single opponent during his career - unlike Block & Sirro!! Just the facts & not an ill-informed opinion mate!!!

Like I said, throwing the ball at marios knees only a few minutes into the game while we were coming off our own line, then blowing up at Mario for dropping it is just a reminder….like in the 80s when it was Souths v Balmain and before they packed into a scrum Benny bit his own hand to make it bleed, then cried out to the ref that Mario bit him, and Mario got sent off.

Plenty of stories like that, and Benny loves hearing them be told becuase he gets a giggle out of them.

I love his passion and ability, its just sad to find out he really was a wanker of a player.

He was a little grubby on the field & a master of gamesmanship - but he is a good bloke from all my experiences!

Mario on the other hand …. he was a genuine grub both on field and off it!!

That story about the hand-bite is merely a case of karma catching up with Mr Fenech - he used to lose the plot on the field especiall in his early Souths days!

He set out to illegally hurt blokes - which is not something you could accuse Benny of!

I'm sure hes a great bloke to have a beer with, congrats on that BTW….

Doesn't change the fact the persona I had built up as a little kid was shattered as an adult.

No worries mate - not trying to get into an argument - just wanting to get across my personal experience of the bloke!

Blocker was also a grub on the field - but like Benny - he remains a club legend & a brilliant player in not only my eyes!

It was a different game in the 80s - let alone the 70s - how much of a grub was Raudonikis for example? Still a legend of the game!

Yeah definitely a different game.

I just remember sitting at Seagulls stadium as a little kid wondering why the entire crowd was shouting "Benny is a wanker" hahaha.
