Clubs fight over the next Benji

The club shouldn't be paying him massive overs to try and keep him, because the club will be repeating mistakes of the past, which can jeopardise the current roster and the future roster the club is trying to build, just like Tedesco, and probably woods and simmona they could've left for more money but they stayed, the tigers should be building a team with a culture that players want to play for and along side each other each week instead of playing for money, just like the broncos and the storm players turn down money from other clubs just to play for those teams and with those certain players and also coaches especially Bennett maybe its a culture and a team environment they create and enforce.
One gun team will always be better than one gun player. A team mentality.

Why will this kid be a superstar? why will he make the step up to NRL when many others dont?

The word you are looking for is vision!

9 times out of 10 his ability to read the play sees him come up with the right option.

Only the best of the best have his kind of vision.

And this is why we should be ensure he stays at the club. What message does it send when we allow Austin to go and potentially raise the white flag over this player?

You can't make people stay if they don't want to.
He shows plenty of promise but the highlights here looks like a game of touch football.
It's a big step up to the next level.

And what if we do pay overs for him only to find he struggles as much as or more than the two young fellows we have in the halves already?
There are no certainties in this game. We don't know how he'll cope at NRL level. We have already had to pay more than we should have to keep Brookes and Moses - but that was what was required to fend off the poachers.
It gets down to the NRL giving some sort of dispensation to clubs who produce the young talent. We all know this, but still nothing has happened from NRL headquarters. This is where we need to overhaul the 'system' that is currently in place, because all it does is favour the clubs with endless $$$ to spend. (And to be honest, that's probably why the system hasn't been changed - too much influence from a few wealthy clubs).
Martin may end up being the best young half we have seen for a generation, or he could just be another kid with plenty of potential who never quite made it. Unfortunately, it's probable we'll find out which by watching him at another club.

We know his history through Keebra Park and that he has coped with all levels of junior footy. There are 8 or 9 clubs chasing him who all would have had scouts and coaches watching him play at games. All indications are he is a good one.

We scouted him, signed him and put him through our system. Someone needs to reassure him that if he performs, he will be promoted to the NRL.

In terms of player payments for good young halves, what we paid for Moses and Brooks might seem like good value with the current shortage of halves. Perhaps we sacrifice buying a s/row forward to sign Martin and wait for young Matt Woods or Bailey Sironen to develop. After all we know their pedigree. We are good at developing talent,

Maybe its time to do what other clubs do and scale back on the junior development and put the money into buying a player that is already at NRL standard, rather than take the punt on kids making the next step.

Dont get me wrong I admire our club for the time, effort and money they pump into their juniors, but till the NRL actually reward them for their efforts its a fruitless campaign. The Dogs,Chooks,Manly and Storm have all been strong for years and they do it by the cheque book. Okay people might say we do it because we can not compete, but if we re directed the junior dollars maybe we could.

I am just sick of being a also ran year in and year out

Even if the club doesn't pay him overs the tigers will probably still have the upper hand on him, coz what he will be definitely taking into consideration is the friends he has at the club and especially the players who he has played with at school in the keebra team that won the national title the majority of the other players in that team are still at the tigers which the other nrl clubs don't have, well not yet at this present time.

Spending cash on developing juniors isn't the issue, it's outside the cap so it doesn't impact our ability to spend cash on attracting a marque.

Our issues stem over the years from terrible management who have stuffed our cap with backloading and by the sounds of it, bad contract negotiations during resignings (i.e. Teddy). We also need to be in a better position to attract 3rd party deals. A high profile CEO will do that for us over the next few years (alongside the new NRL board members). Our prior board members being club patrons just aren't the right way to get the Business $'s

I'm confident Marina and JT have us on the right track to fix our problems. It might be a painful 2-3 years though.

As for Te Martin, it's really an embarrassment of riches at the moment. Hardly a bad situation to be in. Next everyone will be complaining their wallet is too small for their Fifty's and their diamond shoes are too tight!

Would love to keep him, but it would imbalance our team towards play-makers if we pay overs. Especially when we are still trying to resolve our cap issues as I mentioned above.

Our only hope is if he loves the club or feels he should repay them for the development over the years. I don't give that much hope. I actually heard he has already signed with the Saints (but not a reliable source).

The only way we could keep him is if he was going to be a high chance of a weekly first grade spot.
And the only way I could see this happening would be a re-shuffle, something like:
1 - Moses
3 or 4 - Tedesco
6 - Martin
7 - Brooks

And I don't really think that's a great idea. Tedesco needs to be at fullback

This might be shot down. But is there a way to keep all three and play in the same team?
Teddy perhaps to centre? Moses back to FB where he played pretty decent last year? That could fit Te Maire into the halves
1\. Moses
3\. Teddy
6\. Martin
7\. Brooks

Move our best player out of his preferred position, i dont think thats a good idea.

Good post HT. I hope Martin stays with us , but been offered big money and a chance to play first grade NRL is way too much temptation.
Good luck to him, and hope he makes a success of it.

Yep,the current "business model"to quote that cliche aint working…ie investing heavily in juniors only to see them come onto the open market and force us to pay market rate to retain them becuase we simply dont want them stolen away...and risk that they may fail regardless.Storm/Easts manly....even Dogs...tend to buy most of their top players
In the interim, all we can afford is the odd discard from other clubs hoping to get lucky ,or players past their best-by date.
Its all about balance
I feel empathy for our coach who has been somewhat hamstrung with his inherited playing roster, and wonder what he cld have done with Austin Koriebete M r t Blair Thompson gavet for starters
Thats why we need to cut him a bit of slack IMO

Who have we "really" let go…
Who have we "really" missed?
The only ones' I can think of are Kane Evans (Inner west Junior) and Adam Reynolds played with us a year - Only as a ring in.
Ryan Hoffman was a lifetime ago, Folau moved, Hayne was always on Parra's coin....
I can't really think of anyone else we missed.
Manly have invested in Jnrs as well - They're starting to come through...
When you have a junior pool as large as ours, You can't not invest in it.

Our problem always has and will continue to be management, And the corporate dollar.
Mayer was a shining light and did some great things in changing the way we were doing things. We need more business bucks... We'll only get them with success.

All this situation does is highlight the stupidity of 'transfer' system in NRL. Development clubs spend money developing players and others just watch and pick off the best ones.
So the 20s comp is for us to show other clubs the top future players.
Quickly getting fed up with NRL

sorry no slack for a hopeless coach, and by the way he was the one who grant most of the players releases, all were under contract yet he agreed to all of them leaving.

So he should have said no when a player or players ask for a release on compassionate grounds? Name me one coach or club that has ever done that?

Think Canberra held Milford last year even though he had asked for a release on compassionate grounds

Jordan Kahu is probably the best example along the same lines. But I don't think he ever played NYC with us. I think the Broncos stole him even though we had a option in our favour to place in NYC from Keebra.

It won't matter what rising halves are coming through, for the next 5 years we are stuck with Brooks and Moses…doesn't matter how good the next kids are we have been TOLD brooks and Moses.,.end of story...to bad if they don't make the cut in the next few seasons, other talent will go elsewhere and absolutely kill it at another club..but that's what the WTs do...

And we do it very , very well
