I will be cancelling my membership rollover tomorrow. Want to see how this plays out

I’m doing the same. I sent an email to WestsTigers AFTER I rolled over my membership stating how disenfranchised I felt as a member. I listed many ways that I felt the club showed no respect for members. I also listed ways to turn members into advocates for the club. I received back an explanation that simply justified everything they did.
Now, yet again, we are in the middle of a crap fight. This garbage never happens at Melbourne or roosters.
I’ll always support the club and I’ll watch every game but I’m showing my disappointment by pulling my membership. Sad thing, the club couldn’t care less.

Doesn't rolling over the m'ship mean you are renewing?

If so, did you say in your email that you are opting out?

I initially opted in. I’ve since said not to renew my membership

Sad Steve, Think we four may end up doing the same.

I don't get you guys. Cleary backstabs Tigers and now Matto might be doing the same, and your response is to withdraw membership and penalise the club.

I don't know what you expect the club to do. Damned in all directions if your key signing suddenly wants more money and kicks stones to get his way.

"This never happens at the Storm or Roosters". Well, firstly, go support those damned clubs if that is the benchmark. Secondly, no, teams currently in the top 1 or 2 clubs tend to not have too many upset players.

But actually contract nonsense happens at every club, that's unfortunately part of the deal with sports. Folau backstabbed Melbourne to sign a 4-year deal with Broncos after his debut season. Justin Hodges sought out a mid-year transfer to Broncos from the Roosters in 2004. Ryan Cross strung the Roosters along for a while then defected to rugby. Will Chambers defected to rugby after the 2009 GF. RTS turned down a Roosters deal to take on a lucrative one at Warriors. Rarely do players publicly weasel their way out of deals, but they "backstab" clubs all the time.

"I'll still support the club and watch every game", but, you know, I won't part with any money, to show Tigers how disappointed I am. That's such a disappointing outlook. I understand if money is a problem, but to quit on the Tigers when they need support the most. I mean, bandwagoning is easy, easy as pie to ride with the successful team. But the club needs strong supporters when times are tough.

Apparently we need tougher management and a tough coach, but supporters can just quit.

100%

Totally agree ..... it’s kind of sad if people are really doing this because one immature player and his manager are playing $ games. Get real people when times get tough .... tough get going. This is not the time to punish the club for something they have very much control over.

Just one player and it would make sense. Numerous good players wanting out over 5 -6 years says something else.

Have a good look at the off season player movements and then tell me that apart from very few clubs that seem to have unlimited cap space and TPAs ..... this type of thing is just normal business.
It’s just the way life is ... the rich get richer and the poor are just that.

Now the only way I can see that that could change with me is to start following one of the “blessed ones” but you know I’m an old Magpie supporter and am used to seeing good players ripped from my team. And I’m also used to being a proud supporter of an underdog team such as ours. And am happy to see new talent emerging and team getting rebuilt no matter how many times it’s burned down and pillaged!

So you ain’t going to convince me to give up and not support something I believe in and enjoy in my life ..... no matter how many money hungry prima donnas decide to bale out.

Im not trying to convince anyone to quit. But im not gonna swallow the 'woe is us' line either. Too many good, one great , players have left over the last 5 years with no good replacements has convinced me we're anything like a well run club.
If they have 600k to throw at ambassador roles while our coaching ranks are thin then they don't need my money.

Matterson won't make or break us, and his actions over the last week has shown that the image we had of him as fans, is flawed.
I will back the decision the club makes because keeping him on our books to spite him will be more of a negative for us than a positive.

@The_Patriot Masters waiting in the wings, using the Matterson fiasco as a test case, he’ll be next to spit the dummy but he can kiss his NZ Test jumper goodbye if he does - Tommy Talau has more upside than Masters.
Demote Matterson to orange peeler next year

I am really disappointed at this whole thing and so surprised by the poor behavior of Matterson. Who would have seen this coming a few months ago? What stops this crap from continually happening? My mind goes back to the Cleary saga and in that debacle, when I look back now, I believe we came out way ahead. Ivan and Nathan have struggled and got what they deserved. So let’s hope that we get a similar result here.

I agree, now’s the time to let him go - we’ll get the best compensation for him now. If we hang on to him and drop him down to reggies next season his value will decline. Right now he’s still a fringe Origin player and Eels or Dogs will have to pay through the nose.
Maybe the Roosters knew him better and that’s why they let him go.

We're treating this guy as a MESSIAH where in fact he's just a naughty little boy who one day may grow up and learn that you honour agreements that you enter into .

It is not one player. It was Moses, a coach and now another player. The club needs to stand up otherwise the next player we unearth or improve sees that they can simply walk when a better offer comes up.

Did Lattrell get a release or massive upgrade at the Roosters? Is Papenhuyzen holding Melbourne to ransom after one good year?

Players get pay increases at the end of, or as part of an extension to their contract. That is the way it works at most clubs. At least Woods & Tedesco had the decency to see out their contracts before looking for greener grass

Will people drop the compensation talk, there is no such thing. If the club that takes Matterson needs to release players we need to convince them to come to us, and accept the $425k Matterson was on to stay cap compliant. Can you see Arrow signing for that?

Any buyout of the contract or financial compensation cannot be added to our cap to sign replacements, only to the bottom line to cover the loss of income through fans and sponsors turning their back.

Packer, Reynolds and McQueen can be told to look around, but they cannot be forced to leave & will get their contracted payments.

The flip side is a player that has a contract but gets a better offer cannot force the club to let him leave or just walk.

Keep him here, let him sook and impose maximum allowable fines for any misdemeanour.

@Harvey I agree. Send the message to him, his manager and the NRL. He is staying. If he really is sick, WT will look after him. End of story.

@Tiger_Steve I understand your stance but this is exactly what the NRL wants. Stop supporting the tigers but continue watching and attending.

Todd greenturd is having tea with Burgo because he is unhappy, he gives Inglis a known salary cap cheater and a number of infringements a reference and a leave pass, cammies wife a diamond ring also a known salary cap cheat, part responsible for some of the most non sportsman like tactics. Yet we have a number of instances were players and coaches openly make the nrl contracts look like a square of dunny paper and not a peep, not even a comment.

He is a joke and the nrl will remain one whilst he is at the helm.

Morning rant about the nrl over.

@tony-soprano well with that the club has never had a wooden spoon and as frustrating as it is finishing 9th and in the middle of the pack consistently is not a bad thing in the context ... one more step is needed . We were also thinking of stopping our memberships but we have decided to give it another year .. but to be frank we are on the fence and the club needs to get its act together next year in many aspects not just on the field ! On Matterson he has now damaged himself to the general league public and the media are also dirty on him , the guy is another walking HIA waiting to happen , cut him loose and use the 400+ on someone that actually wants an opportunity.. this could well be a blessing in disguise!

@BenzaTiger
No mate. Was referring to Antonio Brown who threatened to punch his GM so he could get traded out of a crappy team.

He's now playing for the Super Bowl favorites.

**If they have 600k to throw at ambassador roles while our coaching ranks are thin then they don't need my money.**

That was my feeling a few years back when we were paying players to play everywhere. If they have that much money to throw around all the time then they don't need mine.

The playing talent at other clubs on the cusp of first grade or like Matterson playing small minutes from the interchange, will now have some difficult choices to make. Do they continue at their clubs or, go to WTs because players get a go to prove themselves. Do that and big clubs come calling with big contracts. Ideally a two to three year stay would work for us,

We don't have anything to gain by releasing Matterson.

If he is adamant he wont sign an extension/upgrade, then make the bum play out the two years according to the terms he signed up for, and then thank him for his services on the way out.

The club needs to stop being seen as a soft touch, otherwise it will happen over and over again.

The problem with this whole saga, is the WestsTigers brand name takes a hit and it would appear they are the innocent party. Things like recruitment and attracting cooperate partners becomes that little bit harder.

We walked away from the Cleary thing as winners I am not so sure we can do it two years in a row.

@supercoach Yes SC I think we can. Matterson is contracted. The ball is in our court. If a swap out isn't favourable he stays.
On another note with WT's, we may be seen as weak and a stepping stone for players but it does baffle me and I don't expect this talk in the next couple of years. As I see it, we are a profitable organisation, moving into a fantastic COE, have plenty of fans, interest from loyal sponsors, premiership winning coach and very strong ownership in Wests Ashfield etc. Don't know if I am wearing rose tinted glasses, but why can't we be a powerhouse, especially when Concord is renovated and the COE opens....
