@TigersBusDriver From what we have seen this sesaon. Matterson certainly is not a bludger. He probably feels unappreciated for the very good efforts he has put in. A pay rise would be a just reward and one he would appreciate.

I agree, the bloke should be captain, playing 80 minutes on the right edge, he never missed a game this year, and would have played 80 minutes every week only he was moved to the middle

@jirskyr he was given a good squad by the owner. They won a comp and then flopped and why was that? The players got rid of him namely the brothers mafia. He can coach but he hasn’t learnt how to man manage the playing group which is vitally important. He basically admitted it when he signed but pressure got the better of him and he went back to his old ways. It doesn’t help with the assistants he has either but I have a feeling that’ll change very soon.
I’m hearing there’s going to be a change in the recruitment dept soon but it’s very hush hush so that’s a wait and see.
I’m not a hater of Madge I just think he comes with baggage but at least he doesn’t have son coming thru 😏

Any sources???

Just my take but recently we had advice this forum the WTs were chasing a forward of similar quality to Matterson. Figures quoted for this forward (Arrow/) were considerably higher than Matterson. Matterson and his manager want parity in contract value?

@jirskyr Have to agree, how on earth could any Tigers player be taken seriously when it is there for all to see how many of them have a soft underbelly . A coach comes along that demands accountability and they crumble like children and run off to there managers and Jurnos crying foul!

I’ve said this before. Sick of hearing about players not liking this or that. Over indulged, over paid spoilt brats with no grip on reality. They are living the dream ffs.
Matterson saying he is knocking on the door of SOO - because tigers gave him a go!
I’m sure there are many wonderful, professional and eager young men in the NRL but the big heads are a pain. They are also soft and ego fueled. Mate, score a try, head down and back into position - it’s called humility.

I'm not surprised to hear this, although I thought Matterson may have been a bit more loyal.....But the underlying problem here is the fact that all the players want to be at successful clubs that achieve finals year in and year out. When are we going to be able to do this:white_frowning_face:

Unfortunately Matterson will come out with the all is rosey statement, I'm not going anywhere, as we heard last year from ivan....one thing I've learnt from 40 years of watching footy....hear one thing, expect the opposite....guess Nov 1 will be an interesting time

Nov 1 next year!!

So he cant negotiate from Nov 1 this year steve?

If he’s signed till end 2021 as I’m led to believe then he can’t be approached until November 1, leading into his last contracted year

Managers, hey, why can't we just line them all up and shoot them? Poor old clubs must shake their heads in frustration when BS like this hits the papers.

First and foremost, I agree with @4jtigers - any player who doesn't want to be here can go. Being held to ransom by players is the worst possible outcome and simply doesn't ever end well. Every employer knows that once staff members start trying to leverage other job offers against their current salary, you are in an uphill battle to satisfy that staff member. If not this contract, it will happen again on the next one.

There are perhaps 5 or 6 players in the whole NRL who should be given unilateral power within their club and Ryan Matterson isn't one of those dudes.

Because nrl.com posted it, I assume the noise about meetings is true. The question then becomes why rival NRL clubs are receiving questions of interest on behalf of Matterson, with 2 years to run on his deal. Yes he had a great season for Tigers, but also Tigers afforded him the platform to perform well outside of the Roosters shadow. I believe some players forget this, that their form and performances are not independent of their club - you don't necessarily get the same positive result in different scenery.

The quote "several clubs are monitoring the situation". Of course they are!!! They are probably the same clubs that were sounded out in the first place.

It's therefore all about money and frankly, if $350K for Matto is accurate, he's probably being underpaid. Whoever would have thought Tigers not necessarily paying overs for an up-and-coming player!!

I've said repeatedly that there should be pool system for players agents. X number are approved yearly based on available players and are allotted a pool of players evenly and should get a single fixed fee for the contract (not sure on the amount, it would be arbitrary if I suggested one,) no more predatory behaviour on clubs because agents are getting a % commission and with a fixed fee they will want to get the deals done ASAP instead of prolonging negotiations to screw clubs.

@Tigerboy and quote it on here haha

I’m just wondering what specifically Madge might’ve said to Matto?? So, if u know what this article’s about then please do share.

That makes a lot of sense paws. There are reports that we are throwing money at Arrow. Matterson is on a lot less than we are offering Arrow, and is arguably as good a player. Under those circumstances, I don't blame his management for attempting to upgrade his deal. As far as I'm concerned, Matterson is a "must keep".

Not sure I agree with 'Anyone who doesn't want to be here should go' because that is what has been happening to any exciting player we have had in the last 5 years.

its a worry if the story has been reported by the herald-which has a bit more credence than other media sources.

i thought matterson was thick with josh aloai- ? who recently resigned with the tigers
perhaps he should get in the ear of matterson and influence his future

Interesting when you listen to Madge’s press conference just before the 6min mark and they asked about Chris Lawrence’s contract and he said words to the effect that he only has a certain amount of room in the cap and if players want to play here within that then he wants them here, perhaps he wasn’t only talking about Lawrence.

Wow. Ever since Lawrence had the contract issue we have been getting banged in the media. Some pretty big mouths have decided to take a dump on us.

@CarltonDry The club is soft the player group is soft the mental attitude is garbage .. if players are soft and do not want to come because of Madge they can get stuffed ! There are plenty that want an opportunity and would be willing to put in!
The club has to make a decision whether finally having a team with a hard edge .. but then again the boardroom table is a marshmallow!

Yep I don't know how Pascoe sleeps at night.

Players are beating the doors down to play for Wests Tigers.

This has been rumoured for a while but I gave it no thought as he has a two year deal remaining and can’t leave. It’s smart by his manager and tells me the Matulino retirement and also the off loading of players will happen soon.

His manager obviously wants him to be paid what he is worth say 550-600k. If we extend him for 2 further years and upgrade the salary it’s a good move.

Problem is we need reinforcements this will further hamper us as we need to extend Twal also next year. This is what happens when a coach pays overs for players Mbye, Reynolds, Matulino, Packer. We are in a worse position than when Farah was supposedly the cause of all evil on 900k.

How the hell was that such an issue when now we have 4 players on huge money in reserve grade.

Well how might have this started.

I'm looking no further than the Tigers alleged pursuit of Jai Arrow, the totally overrated Titans player who supposably knock back 800k to test his value on the open market.

Matteson has to be kept at all cost, if money is that tight he get's Lawrence's 100k with a promised further upgrade based on performance for the following year.

I'm well and truly over sentimentality, I wonder how many sentimentalist's were wearing orange, black and white at Leichhardt around 3.55pm last Sunday afternoon.

I saw thousands - don't know about you.
