Just a little different perspective about the Chinese panic buying.

I had an interesting conversation with a Chinese student today. English definitely was not his first language. He was telling me that in China when a disaster happens the Chinese go out and stock up. They do this because they don’t know when they are going to get food again. He was very concerned and was going to do the same. I let him know that Australia is not going to run out of food. That we are a Primary Producer who exports food which we now cannot do. We have 3 times as much food as we need and we are definitely not going to run out.

I swear I almost saw a lightbulb moment on his face.

My experience has been that the supermarket stupidity seems to have no racial boundaries and it is definitely not confined to the Chinese.

The Asians always start the mass panic buying which forces the normal everyday folk to do the same !
Got any spare baby formula ?

Ive wondered about the baby formula parallel. With baby formula, Chinese were either sending it home or selling it.

Does anyone think there is a market for bog roll?

Baby formula is more the quality of the product produced here..mostly bog rolls are bog rolls except those little sheets you get in public dunnies Westsfields etc...

Probably why the Chinese just acquired Dairy Farmers and it’s subsidiaries..

While Australia definitely produces enough food, globalisation has destroyed a lot of our capacity for processing it (e.g canneries etc). So some food is grown here, exported for various forms of processing or value-adding, and then imported back. Still though, there shouldn't be much of a problem.

I honestly dont understand why there is any debate about it.

We've had lots of virus outbreaks throughout the world. We've been warned about this for years. It's not just a China wet market problem. The problem is much more complex than that. It's like you are looking for a single scapegoat and an easy target but it's not that simple.

It's not that China have done a great job or that their behavior is exemplary but maybe they've handled this better than western countries. I know that this is a subjective opinion but it should be considered and there is some validity in this opinion.

My take is your opinion is too focused on China and it's not a realistic assessment of the situation.

**China caused this, that should be at the forefront of every discussion about this. They are directly to blame for this starting.**

what does that achieve? How does it help human kind at the present moment?

It doesn't. We are discussing this thing, I'm just saying that this thing started there and it's important to not gloss over that fact like they did nothing wrong.

What's important for the country now, (I feel humankind is too big a basket for this convo, and if you'll permit me to narrow a response to just Australia, thank you) is to reduce the impact of this virus by isolating to let the health system try and cope as best they can. I don't see that happening yet, the isolating, which is very concerning.

As for China's leadership, it would be fair to say basically every single person educated here understands their role in continuing suppression and authoritarian rule. Furthermore, most everyone now living in our nation would also be aware of their role in relation to this virus outbreak, as it has been reported across the media platforms.

Agreed, though whilst the schools remain open it is hard to argue.

Personally I dont think the schools issue is as cut and dried as it may appear. Schools are closed and the kids are roaming the streets or at home with Mum or Dad not being able to work. May not provide much of an infection benefit for a VERY big economic cost.

A blanket closure, maybe not at the moment, but it seems that many of the children show little or no sign of illness and the latest figures, particularly in Sydney are very worrying as clusters of local transmission become more obvious.

For instance, I live in a virus clear area up at the top of the Central Coast, but mental health issues with my wife have our son and I often staying at my parents at Ryde when he cannot handle home. There is no way that I would be sending him to school when down there at the moment, believing that all schools in such areas should be closed immediately and not reopen until after the Easter school holidays at best.

Tough situation FG, genuinely hope you can find resolution quickly.

With regards the schools, IMO the lowest damage option is leave them open, any positive tests in a school shut the school down for 2 weeks and every self isolates. A long way from perfect but better than alternative right now

Kids aren’t going to school anyway atm. I was told today that all staff at my job could recieve a text saying not to come in the following day at any moment. All libraries in our LGA have been closed, swimming lessons are suspended, and we aren’t taking booking for any parks or facilities.

Just remember the second of April it's a important day

That's national stay inside and watch nexflix

And say for arguments sake that Australia went into lock down on the second of April and a few days before hand all domestic flights are cancelled and that’s one week before school holidays and it was planned to go for two weeks and a third if needed there would be no rugby league and the AFLs idea would make sense to play for 17 weeks it would be like the have inside information and very smart and ties in with the planed time that Qantas plans to shut all international flights with they announced the other day

Yeah, with shallow talk about copying the Singapore model, but minus monitoring and wholesale testing, even after generally praising our response a few weeks ago, I no longer feel assured.

I have little to no faith in the strength of most health related decisions made in the past fortnight or so and on that basis of lessons learned overseas, am now expecting to look back on it in an even worse light a fortnight or so from now.

The economy was always going to tank and I worry that because of prioritising an economic, rather than medical approach, despite the mounting evidence, we as a nation are going to suffer unnecessary and unacceptable human loss.

I have been looking at the statistics for a while now and particularly so for a week or two. As each day passed and more graphs became available, I have noticed just how much the numbers/plot points playing out right now in Australia resemble the graph spikes of those countries that are suffering massive losses at the moment. Around your date looks about on the money to me.

With the number of the single wedding attendees testing positive now at 35 and likely still rising, I hope that authorities are already setting up additional facilities around the gong region and take community control measures tomorrow.
